Oddly enough, i tend to regard most of these composers as belonging solidly in the late 19th century - Mahler, Puccini, Rachmaninoff - even Ravel and Debussy: their music fits very firmly with the "late Romantic" period, instead of the more dissonant, "experimental", aggressively non-traditional music of Schonberg, Stravinsky, Hindemith, Phillip Glass, etc. I AM happy that Morricone was included: he truly carved out his own path through the Forest of Music, doing things that nobody had done before - well, at least nowhere near as well as he did!!

Would it be correct to say that it was Stravinsky's work that started the 20th century revolution in music? I remember reading or being told that it was the onomatopeic parts of his music that lead musicians and composer to wonder "why when the orchestra mimics an animal sound it's music but the animal sound in itself isn't?". THanks!

Of that list, Stravinsky and Prokofiev are among my absolute favorites from that century. Others that I feel should get honorable mention are: John Barry, Miklos Rozsa, Gustav Holst (Planets Suite arguably the most influential work of the 20th century), and Bernard Herrmann. Aaron Copland and George Gershwin were notable omissions, though...

This is extremely Eurocentric. I'd make the argument that Scott Joplin had far more influence on the future of music as a whole than anyone else on this list. Ragtime paved the way for jazz, blues, rock, rap, folk, hip hop, etc. Joplin did more in his brief life and career to influence the rest of the 20th century than anyone else on this list.

agreed, williams did much more stealing, and had no really innovative ideas, shostakovich had to live with stalin, and stravinsky revolutionised polyrhythms
@wyattwahlgren8883
@wyattwahlgren8883 2 жыл бұрын
@@largebill1245 There are some objective measures in music. There's this lie being spread all around the internet that art is subjective (I'd call it a half lie, but still). I think the best metric is influence. Stravinsky was by far the most influential composer of the 20th century. He freed all composers of the rules they were told to follow with the revolutionary Rite of Spring, especially in regards to rhythm. Although, Debussy and Ravel were doing that in the same spirit, but their works were conventionally beautiful. Lastly, I don't think this list is meant to be objective. It's more of a "my top ten favorite composers of the 20th Century" sort of thing.
