Del Toro's version has more in common with the 1940 Disney film than people realize - they both make the same ideological break with the novel. In Carlo Collodi's book Pinocchio is treated as inherently evil from the time he's created, and the other characters are constantly chastising him for his evil nature, and even when he's clearly being manipulated by evil adults, Collodi always heaps more judgment on him. Disney and Del Toro both have a more balanced understanding of children - Pinocchio is not "bad" but inexperienced, and both of those movie versions make it plain that the adults exploiting him are more guilty than he is, something that never seemed to occur to Collodi.

It’s one of the most stunning stories I’ve had the honour to watch. :’3c And its emphasis on being a real boy not being rooted in the parts you made of, and the importance of not always just listening to what others and society is telling you to do. What is interesting about this movie is that in many ways it may be more "woke" then the disney one, but executed in a properly done way that doesn't feel force and contrived.
@tompaauwe4565
@tompaauwe4565 Жыл бұрын
I don't really even feel like it's very woke. It stays true to Italian culture and origin of the fairy tale. And while the theme somewhat contradictory to Pleasure Island for example. Pinocchio is clearly still very impulsive and not always rewarded for the mistakes he's made. Real art is nuanced and open for interpretation.
@knellycornnan5132
@knellycornnan5132 Жыл бұрын
@@tompaauwe4565 My point sort of is that I think the movie has better messages and diverse cast of characters without just filling typical woke checkboxes. Like in the Disney version they choose to make the blue fairy and african woman. In this movie, they decided to make the blue fairie look more like an actual biblical faerie or spirit while also being a death goddess. They way they set it up and executed it made it more original and diverse in a way to either of the disney movies while making sense and not feeling forced or like there is some kind of agenda behind it. Thats what I meant when I said its sort of woke, but just not in the bad way.
@Richard_4920
@Richard_4920 Жыл бұрын
@@tompaauwe4565 I agree that Del Toro's version is a lot more "woke" than Disney, mainly because it subverts the idea of being obedient to authority, and calls out authoritarianism and war for what they are. However, one of the reasons Del Toro's version succeeded is that they were not afraid to confront tough issues like authoritarianism, mortality and war (like how Sesame Street addressed bereavement, poverty, and having a parent in prison), rather than sugar-coat it out of existence like what Disney did. There is no doubt that there is a need for films that address social inequality and other things, but it is going to take more than just changing the ethnicity of a character and then think it's enough (tempting, though). The Great Pinocchio War of 2022 will be remembered as an example of how to and how not to address social injustice, and we have an Oscar and a Razzie respectively to prove it.

You gotta think of it this way. The pleasure island scene was the training camp, but instead of boys being naughty and partaking in too many sweets/drinking/gambling/etc. You have boys being taught how "fun" war is. To me, that's a darker take on the "pleasure" of pleasure island.
@JessicaChastainFan
@JessicaChastainFan Жыл бұрын
@@SICProwl Not really. They literally had fun with no real bloodlust desire, which could have made it feel darker. Del Toro chickened out, and in his mind, the boys are too perfect to be imperfect. The only ones allowed to be bad with Italian Nazi dad and the skinny Stromboli. The boys should have been given an edge like in the 1940 Pinocchio, but have the movie still remind us that, bad or not, no children deserve the fate that awaited them. Del Toro and Robert dropped the ball, whereas Walt succeeded. But training for war is so by the book standard, generic and basic that it doesn't reach the levels of horrors presented in the world. However, a creepy fat, pedophile child trafficker like The Coachman, taking advantage of children who aren't wise to the grim world we live in by transforming them into donkeys where most of them were sold and killed (for still talking) is vastly darker than what Del Toro did. Even his "Monstro" finale was a complete abortion with very little tension, excitement or grit. In the 1940 original, it was the only time I've ever felt like these characters were going to die any minute because of how vicious Monstro was, not to mention having to evade him on the open ocean. In Del Toro, and the 2022 live action remake, they both failed to make that finale feel real.
