Wow! Thanks for responding. I could never find a good explanation online as to what it was. Makes sense it's some kind of fluctuating signal disruption. I did read that the effect on the recording was accidental initially and that they decided to recreate or leave it in for the final.

Theres one thing i hate about Misfits, and its not even their fault. (Nirvana has this problem too) People wear their shirts cause they think the design looks cool. Like, thats ok and all, but when someone asks them what their favorite song by them is, instead of saying "oh, i just thought the shirt looked cool, i did t know it was a band shirt" (which would be respectable) they make shit up. Fucking hate it. Thats the only thing i hate about them though. Love them otherwise.

I think a distinction needs to be drawn between actual fans of these groups, and kids that admire what their logo stands for nowadays. Bands like the Misfits, Nirvana, Sublime, the Rolling Stones are iconic because of their music, but are also iconic for reasons that go far beyond just their music, (I hope that makes sense). I'm a fan of all of these groups, and I would be a bit miffed to see someone who's probably too young to understand the message, repping the group with a t-shirt (probably bought at hot topic), on the other hand, this sense of revulsion probably says more about me than it does about them. They're counterculture kids, and they're stupid (like we all were at their age). We need to let them discover these things organically, and naturally, and I don't think hating on them for wearing t-shirts from GOOD BANDS is going to help anyone's cause

I really liked both Danzig's and Graves' work for Misfits. Everyone is talking about the Danzig days but Graves was just as good in my opinion. Dig Up Her Bones, American Psycho, Helena, Dust to Dust, 1000000 Years BC, Mars Attacks, and The Haunting are some of my favorites ALONG with the Danzig work as well (pretty much tracks everyone has already listed XD)

+Robster881 Exactly! Full of great hooks, which is something that I've always considered the prime element of the Misfits. It's also the reason why I think that so many people who dislike punk, love them. The Graves-era was definitely more focused on this aspect and focused a lot on building a proper atmosphere for the hooks to thrive. I love the Danzig-era, but if you put a gun to my head, I'm going to choose the Graves-era.

I saw them twice. Once with Graves between American Psycho and Famous Monsters. That was an awesome show. I remember Graves came out in a Skull mask, holding a torch. Second time I saw them was just after Graves and Chud quit. They had a temporary singer who I can't remember for the life of me. It was in San Fransisco around 2000 or 2001. James Hetfield took the stage with them to sing Die Die, My Darling. Then I got to meet James after the show as he was in the audience. Back to Graves though, he was a good front man in the Live context and had a good voice and wrote cool melodies, but those albums just don't hold up imo. Old Misfits with Danzig is really something special.

MrOvipare - Misfits essentials? Those are not Misfits songs. Michale Graves aka Cat Turd never was and never will be the Misfits. Glenn Danzig is the only Misfits singer. Anything after Glenn was not the Misfits. AP & FM were an abomination to horror punk/music in general and the fact that they stayed under the same name was insulting the true Misfits. Also, all the Danzig covers that Graves did were pure shit. No Glenn = no Misfits

@not tryna argue but i mean i got into them from famous monsters personally so i really love graves and specifically that album. But i did like the ramones a lot before i heard the danzig stuff so i do get the kind of NY punk scene of danzigs era and yes he has a hell of a lot of good songs too. i think both eras were great. I think the era with Only singing after that wasnt bad it was just a little bland is all, didnt have that energy for me. If you want punk you want danzig and if you want a bit more of a singer you want graves. To me graves reminds me of corey taylors actual singing talent in that genre of metal, graves brings actual vocals to punk, but he can do the punk thing too ofc! just my opinion, but yeh i can see if u jumped into famous monsters expecting danzig era sound, u are probably not gonna like it, but i think its better for graves to be himself than to try to be a clone u know.

Dig Up Her Bones is the Misfits’ Smells Like Teen Spirit. It is their most popular song, loved by a lot of Non-misfits and loved by even non-punk fans, is pretty catchy, and is somewhat “poppy” and mainstream. However, it doesn’t represent the Misfit’s music at all and is often credited as overrated and overplayed by a lot of Misfits fans.

Good choices dude. :) I heard the Misfits for the first time at a friend's house in 1991. I was 17. I didn't know shit about punk even though I had been a guitar player for 5 years. My friend's parents owned The Record Vault in San Francisco in the 70's and 80's. He had pictures of Iron Maiden and Mercyful Fate as a group holding him over their heads when he was around 9 years old. His parents met EVERYBODY that came through S.F. on tour. They had/have EVERYTHING vinyl you can think of that is cool...including a bunch of 33 and 45RPM records from some band called "The Misfits". I asked my friend if they were "any good". He laughed and turned on "We Are 138". I don't need to explain that I fell in forever with that band since. This was before the box set that came out in 96' or so. I felt like I got to be a part of the very small group that got to experience them from the beginning. Back then their first single (Cough Cool/She - Danzig on keys - no guitar) was selling IF YOU COULD FIND IT for $400. I got a 4th generation mix tape that Glenn made for James (Hetfield), that James copied for my friend's parents, that his parents copied for my friend, and that I copied from him. I played that shit for friends and made them copies all over where I lived. It is *incredibly* *special* music. I think I cannot pick any list of favourites. We Are 138 is at the top of the list if there is one though but almost ALL of their music (different takes/live etc) ALL makes me go crazy in a way very few things can in this life. As a singer I find The Misfits are as fun to sing as Ray Charles/Priest/Sabbath/Elvis. I'll just say what songs I don't like: 1,000,000 BC - only on Cuts From the Crypt and something they (wisely) decided to leave on the cutting room floor. Haloween II - As much as I savagely love Mommy Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight (THE IMPLICATION OF THE WORDS is indeed insightful to a certain human psyche but very fucking disturbing given all of the shootings we keep hearing about eh?), this song is too fucking creepy to me because it is in Latin. I always skip it. It's not like I am bothered or concerned about a ritual to turn someone into a werewolf - as that is what this song is about ...and that's pretty much fucking it. I just listened to the 2 albums they did with Michale Graves. I fucking love those albums as well. Of course it took me so long to listen because I was one of those "there is NO WAY it will be good without Danzig". Bullshit. It's great. It is *different* obviously because GLENN and JERRY (not Ben and...oh fuck off lol) were one thing and the later version was another. Anyway, definitely one of my favourite bands for every reason one could love a band...except for technical prowess. Clearly that isn't everything if it makes your heart beat and your body move. I think Frank Zappa may have dismissed them as shit given his general attitude about *punk* but may have liked these guys because they were so fucking ugly and beautiful at the same time. CHEERS!

Graves expanded the sound adding depth and nuance showing that punk music can be expansive and skillful with singers capable of more than just "loud" . His singing and songwriting ability added a whole new flavour to the band and the music. However the "More Hardcore than thou" attitudes in the punk scene did a great job ensuring that no one under the age of 30 treats Punk as anything more than a pubescent phase with little credibility.

Hybrid Moments is also my favorite Misfits song. And like you Anthony, I don't know exactly why. It's so short and pretty simple when it comes to instrumentation. But what makes the song is the message. I think that everyone who loves that song loves it because it expresses something that they were feeling in a very down time in their life. Not to say that this is your reasoning for loving it, but for some reason, it speaks to you when you are feeling depressed.

I always thought it was literally about turning into a creature from Mars, but at riot fest Danzig explained it's about feeling like a freak. Kinda makes it even cooler that it's got scifi imagary, but is actually a relatable metaphor.

Good call. I never knew the title of Hybrid Moments but I would always sing along with it and just mumble some nonsense. Then I looked up the lyrics. Now it’s one of my faves as well. For all their hardcore aesthetics the band knew how to write a catchy hook like no other and Danzig was as much of a crooner than a punk. One track I also love that you didn’t mention is London Dungeon. Something about that opening riff just sounds sour and menacing, and the hook is one of their best. Thanks for the great content as always! 😎

Ghouls Night Out this list was a bitch to make cause I had to leave out Skulls, Scream, Hate Breeders, Wolfsblood, Bullet, Angelfuck, Dig Up Her Bones, and a few others I'd consider to be my favorites, and to answer your question about The Devil's Rain Album, I only like two songs off that album, The Devils Rain, and Jack The Ripper.

Agreed, hybrid moments is my favorite too and I would agree with most of the rest of the list AND your comments about the new stuff. After watching quite a few of your videos I was wondering what you grew up on as a kid. Did you parents/family or friends invite you to listen to certain kinds of music (I would assume so) and what genres were they? What were some of the first bands you were "into". I have other questions but this is most interesting to me because I have quite a few music-head friends and none of them listen to as wide an array of genres as you. I mean I don't think I know anyone that likes black metal, pop, indie AND hip hop... how did you become.. YOU?!?

So, I'm more of a metalhead but recently joined a local punk band and The Misfits definitely inspired the riffs and lyrics I write as well as my vocals. I love the screamy belting vocals used in a lot of songs and the grimey crunchy tone of the guitars is just beautiful! I'm glad I started playing punk rock so I was actually able to find this kickass band!

Allow me to attract the hate of everyone by saying that Michale Graves, Danzig, and Jerry Only are all pretty good. And it was a mixture of all their personalities that led to the breakup. Jerry and Danzig are both super controlling assholes who are hard to work with, and Graves was allegedly pretty disrespectful. But, fuck, when Graves and Danzig were singing, the band was at its best.
