The Gary Matthews Jr catch to me is in the top 3 all time. He took his eyes off the ball, had about half a second to track it, then caught it blind. Still makes my jaw drop.

The Matthews catch is my vote for number one of all time. There are lots and lots of lots of choices (frankly I'm not even sure the Jim Edmonds one was HIS best, let alone one of THE best) but when I think of all the baseball I've ever watched, I always come back to this one. Also, Jackie Bradley Jr had one in extra innings against Baltimore that was equally ridiculous.

I made a "Willie Mays" catch one time messing around with friends. A buddy was hitting fly balls to us. He really gets a hold of one and off the bat I was like, "shit...I'm not getting that one", but then I was like "screw it....give it a shot", just turn and ran full steam to where I thought it was headed. Put the glove out in front of me, heard a whistling sound near my ear and out of the corner of my eye I see the ball sail over my shoulder and perfectly into the glove....lol. Best catch I ever made...in a mean nothing moment....haha..

As a lefty playing RF, a ball was hit down the line by a right handed batter. It was hooking to the foul line away from me. I took off after it and didn't take my eye off the ball. I stretched out and made a diving backhand grab about 6 inches off the ground across the body. I bounced up and threw the guy out that was running from first to second as he took off not giving me a chance to catch it. The boys loved that one. There were a couple dive over the fence catches but those were on short fences. Tore my pants on one I had to leave the game. Love the game but hockey was a more engaging sport and there was no stop and go like in baseball and the physical aspect of the game appealed to me. I'm close to 70 now and enjoyed reminiscing.

Agreed! The Griffey catch where he broke his wrist on the wall and the home run robbery should’ve definitely been on here.

Anyone else think that Andrew Jones or Kurt Flood would have been standing under those Edmonds catches, pounding their gloves, waiting for the ball to come down?

I remember Chet Lemon of the Tigers back in the 80's (might have been 84, might have been later) clawed on back against the Angels in their park. He had the wrist bent so far back just over the top snag it. Best catch I ever saw as it happened and was just slackjawed at it

George Brett '85 Gm 5 slide into dugout catch "attempt" is better than any "at the wall" catch ever made. Period. Edmonds LAA catch is #1 All-time.

Andruw Jones makes the catch at 3:50 without having to dive, and at least makes the play close at second close. His arm was twice as good as Jim’s.

There's definitely some truth to this, but I'm kinda torn. They're still ultimately great catches, but most great CFs wouldn't have had to even leave their feet 🤷

This is exactly what I was thinking. Jim Edmonds was not a bad centerfielder but was vastly overrated. He didn't have much range which is why he had to make diving blaze all the time

As much as I hate the White Sox, Dewayne Wise made a catch at the wall in the 9th to give Mark Buehrle a perfect game. Just as good as Souza’s

Endy Chávez catch(0:05) should be ranked higher than Jim Edmonds (also 0:08 1B runner) catch(3:51).

Ken Griffey Jr. had so many great catches that should have been on here, except for the one they did put on here.

Jim Edmonds catch while with the Angels is way better. The Jeter catch is pretty routine, nothing spectacular about that he just flew into seat because not enough foul territory. By those standards Bo Jackson catching a ball and then walking on the wall is more spectacular

Souza very nearly overran that ball. Can you imagine if he hadn't caught it -- a rookie who had spent more than half the year in AAA and hadn't done much to impress at the MLB level? He would have been run out of town. Souza was a journeyman for most of his career, having one standout season with the Rays in 2017, and retired last year. But he'll always have that catch.

Any "Top 10 Greatest Catches" countdown list should include #10 through #2 (we can argue about those), and then finally Jimmy Edmonds' catch with the Angels. Period.

I watched that Kevin Mitchell catch live and still consider that and the Otis Nixon catch (not shown here) to be the top two. Third is a catch Yaz made in 1967 to keep a no-hitter alive *the Billy Rohr game*
