@@user-rn6hr1qw3lAli being known as "the greatest" has hardly anything to do with his standing all-time as a boxer. Maybe as a heavyweight champ, yes maybe. He was am ambassador and became almost a statesman. I mean, the whole "who's the greatest" always means in terms of THEIR ERA. NOBODY will EVER come close to being champion for 12 YEARS and/or rack up 25 defenses of the title. Ali's charisma is the only reason some people put him ahead of Louis. I think Tyson, Frazier, and possibly even Holmes gives him all the trouble he can stand in a dream matchup. Ray Robinson at his apex, at Welterweight, with like an 82-0 (68kos) record was the most untouchable fighter in history.

I always felt that "greatness" is a combination of things, who you beat, how do you beat them, are the odds against you? Adversity in and outside of the ring and then things like cultural impact are a bonus. Ali was not the best boxer ever, he was unorthodox and his style had many technical flaws, he didn't always prepare for fights properly (especially late career) etc. He beat arguably 3 top 10 all time heavyweights (Frazier, Foreman, Liston) in addition to beating other legends like Patterson and Norton. On top of this he had to come back from losing positions and go into fights in which he was given no chance to win (Liston and Foreman) and won in spectacular style. I remember seeing a documentary of a boxer when I was little and in it, there was a scene with a boxer shadow boxing but you couldn't see him as it was dark and you could only see his shadow. The way that boxer moved left an impression on someone that had never even seen boxing before. Ali is basically the final boss of anything boxing in video game terms and his cultural impact is absolutely enormous. If we are talking best heavyweights ever then the list will be quite different and Ali will be somewhere in top5. I also resist the idea of putting boxers that boxed 100 years ago at #1 due to lack of footage and documentation

Dont Judge Joe Louis on the videotape alone, because the video is shot at a slower frame rate than what we have used since the 1980s, thus making him appear far slower, far more plodding than he actually was. The difference is similar and comparable to wathing a film in standard definition vs watching a film in 4K.

I think Dempsey should be remembered greater than he is, bigger than Tyson was. In a lot of the computer games out now Dempsey is always an average heavyweight when for a vicious knockout boxer was extremely good on his footwork and his defence was underrated. Think it’s between him and Jack Johnson as being the greatest. Ali was great as was Louis but Ali was vulnerable to the left hook and had no infighting ability at all. That’s why I don’t believe he’d have beaten Dempsey if Frazier beat him in the first fight and was so close in their 3rd. Joe Louis chin let him down and his footwork wasn’t as good either.

@@dreman1970 that was an old Dempsey after a 3 year break and wasn’t the same as he was in his prime. Ali lost to Norton as well and to give an example of his vulnerability to left hookers look at Henry Cooper. Ali was great but Ray Arcel who seen them both believed Dempsey would have been too good for him too. Saying about the Tunney fights is like saying Ali lost to Spinks. If they fought in Dempseys time with the gloves and him being aloud to stand over his man id have to think that the prime Dempsey would win, also Jack Johnson I believe would have won because he beat Langford, McVey and every other great black fighter and was never really shown to have been struggling with a fighter he was so good. Boxers were also small, weighed less, more stationary competition wasnt as good then as later eras. Joe Louis had the greatest combination punching, I've seen, however he was stationary. Fighters that were bigger, faster and had a better chin like Foreman and Liston about, would of beaten him. I would rate Foreman, Holmes , Ali, Liston above Louis as i believe they would of beaten him. I also rate Marcianno above Louis, as he's undefeated. Although Louis was old when he fought Marcianno...I Dont think his chin would take Marciannos relentless attacks who hit till blood vessels were in your arms. With goat stamina to do It rounds on end. Ali of 1963-1967 was the greatest fighter ever in history. In the 70s , you could make the claim , as he's never been knocked out, only stopped once when he was fighting parkinsons, bad pills he was taking. Foreman would make top 3. He was devastating. Liston could too. Louis wouldn't of took shots off Williams and still stand. Holmes was very underated, and outclassed everybody. Marcianno was undefeated. Vitali Klistskcho, Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, Prime Tyson. Even a prime Jimmy Young who made everyone look bad could be up there. @@danbernardi6599 Dempsey was way past it when he fought the great Tunney. I suggest you read a bio and Dempsey. I suggest Flame of Pure Fire by Roger Kahn or the new 3 part bio by Adam Pollock. It’s important to know what you are talking about when you comment And Ali had no defense against the left hook. None… especially when he lost his speed and became a punching bag and survived with his iron chin and enormous heart and strength of character. In total Ali was not a “ boxer” he was a tremendous fighter.

@@Gilturner700 Oh like you know what you're talking about - - I actually saw Ali fight Ken Norton in 1976 - - at that advanced age he could still slip punches - - Norton had a very tight left hook that was hard to slip - - Dempsey's left hook had a wide arc and was usually thrown from a yard away - - as a result Dempsey would have had a hard time landing on Ali - - YOU should watch the video showing Ali's discussion with Cus D'Amato - - he explains why Dempsey would lose to Ali and learn something

This top 10 criteria is flawed. How about a more pure top 10, based on how they would fair against each other. Comparative talent and ability, rather than simply how well they did against men in their own era. There is no way that Dempsey and Tunney would be in that top 10. Lennox Lewis or Iron Mike Tyson would knock out both of them on the same evening.

In 2023, this list has to be revamped. You've got to have Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield on a top 10 heavyweight list. It's unfortunate, but Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey and Rocky Marciano have to be moved down. For me, the Top 5 are: 1. Ali 2. Lewis 3. Foreman 4. Holmes 5.Holyfield. You can mix it up a little bit, but I think these guys at the top sits better with a lot of fight fans.

I'm not sure about Lewis being 2nd. Maybe put marcianno somewhere in the top ten he's undefeated. Other than that I agree with you. Potential others in top ten Holyfield , Tyson, Cooney, Fury is the best today so him. Perhaps Jimmy Young and Norton in top 20. Jimmy beat Foreman, and Norton was Ali toughest opponent who beat him twice. Tunney beat dempsey twice, so he needs top ten status.

For their deeds I would never place Dempsey or Tunney in top ten. They made it clear they would not be defending titles against "Negro" fighters. Publicly announcing this. And this clown Burt Sugar places them ahead of Larry Holmes? Larry fought everyone , white and Black. Dempsey lost to Lester Johnson. Only black opponent he fought. Drew color line after fight was ruled draw . Johnson broke some of Dempseys ribs in route to draw. Most at ringside felt Johnson won. Dempsey himself said later on at Dempseys bar in Manhattan that he felt he lost fight. Tunney wouldn't fight any Black opponents . Not one single black opponent . Godfrey challenged Tunney but Tunney drew color line. Neither deserves to be in top 10. Only someone like Burt Sugar would place them in top 10. Tunney had 1 defense? Pathetic.
