It's shameful how Stillman's Gym wasn't made a historical landmark. Many of the greatest fighters of all time, all weight classes used to train there. Jack Johnson was a regular who watched the sparring and would sometimes lace it up against the top prospects. They also need to do justice to Joe Frazier and preserve his gym in Philadelphia.

Larry would not beat a prime Ali no matter what he says. The difference between them would be Ali's agility-he would probably be able to slip many of Larry's punches. Also, Ali's conditioning was superior to that of Larry's. For example, Ali had been in THREE gruelling fights with Frazier.

What? They didnt made list by your fantasy fight they consider a lot of thing you dont know about that, dempsey changes world boxing and joe louis changes boxing style and fraizer was always saying the classic boxer like dempsey louis marciano can beats me easily and did you watch any fight of louis? Dempsey? Dempsey was a monster and if we should consider fantasy match up i think dempsey can knockout fraizer,this is right about dempsey against foreman or ali

Boxing is beautiful. Styles make fights. Guys this good don't normally meet in their primes. Larry beats Foreman because Foreman had trouble with tall, skilled boxers. (Ali, Jimmy Young and Ron Lyle). Norton had Ali's number 2 or arguably 3 times, and Foreman destroyed Ken. Frazier did something nobody else did in that he beat a close to prime Ali with a great, great performance. Frazier's style was tailor made for Foreman plus George was much bigger and younger. Riddick Bowe was outstanding as was Tyson in their short primes. On size alone you have to consider Tyson Fury. He did boxing a favor by eliminating the Bitchsko sister. Rocky M was tough as nails buy more of a cruiserweight. Great sport.
@donavonhoward114
@donavonhoward114 10 ай бұрын
Yes, it is true that Marciano was the typical size of a Cruiserweight in today's boxing, but Marciano would have literally killed any Cruiserweight of any era with his hands. That's why Marciano was a true heavyweight despite his size. Marciano hit like a truck, he was hard to hit clean, and he had short arms which gave him even more leverage, and power on the inside. Nobody could survive on the inside with Marciano, and I mean that for any boxer that has ever lived in the heavyweight division. That little heavyweight body was tailor made for war. Most bigger guys can't hit with full power when they are throwing short punches on the inside like Marciano did. It helps to be the smaller guy if your style is tailor made for your body type. Also, Marciano wasn't as slow and plodding as people make him out to be. He was deceptively quick, and elusive, but he did it in a very subtle way that was less asthetically appealing to the casual observer. His chin, and his toughness were inhuman, and he always fought against guys that were 40 or 50 pounds bigger than him. It didn't matter much once they were laid out on the canvas. People forget that he was being underestimated even back when he was still fighting before he became champion. Nobody believed the hype at first, but they all found out the hard way how great he really was.

Fury with his size couldnt ko a 38 yr old klitschko! and hes only fought 3 universally ranked fighters in his 16 year career...Furys a big bum imo....If anything mike Tyson and holyfield were special especially tyson because of their small HW size! Tyson absolutely destroyed a 37 yr old basically undefeated holmes......But Fury given his size couldnt do the same to Vlad....instead he patty caked his way to a boring decision! just my opinion.

"By 1980 Muhammad Ali was getting beat by the tricky floor every time he tried to walk forward thanks to a management team who were criminally negligent." would have been my response to Holmes. In fairness, Larry Holmes had been punched in the head about 50 thousand times, AND sounds as though he has a 50/50 shot at failing a field sobriety test or a basic quiz about the names of the items sitting in the room he's in, or, frankly, a quiz about what room he's in and what his own name is. Taking his damage into consideration, he gives the answer which any true, red blooded person who believes they're the champion would give....it's just that typically they sound off like this while they're still fighting, and in later years, if their mind is there, typically become more humble and sensitive. Also, it cannot be overstated the fact that Larry Holmes had zero authentic charisma and won a vacant title in the immediate aftermath of the most charismatic fighter in history, and give their own personal history, constantly had to battle detractors and fight for his deserved legacy against those pundits and talking heads who are always hellbent on waxing poetic about the glorious good 'ol days, or, perhaps, about how things will be at some later, far off time, and generally turn the channel to contemplate the legacy of a giant for an extended period, usually missing entirely the next comer-upper while they eulogize the recent past & ignore the "right now." Holmes falls to the giants he was often overshadowed by in terms of charisma and public perception, which, regardless of whether in reality they were better than, is the quintessential component of these entire debate-lists.

Honestly...shame on ESPN for not assessing Larry Holmes' lucidity before putting him in a position where he believes he's fighting for a spot on a top 10 list. Its so uncomfortable having a legend sitting there clearly unwell and slowly arguing on his own behalf. Read the room, ESPN, maybe bring in an active, young, pre-Dementia Pugilistica suffering athlete who has the capacity to realize he's not on trial in "legacy court." What do y'all think he's gonna do if he's rated supremely low on a list of his peers? To him, he's not taking into account the ten thousand heavyweight boxers who don't make the list, all the legends who didnt makw the cut, he's simply hearing "you're below your old foes even though you beat them 'cause of REASONS." Seriously, it's fucked.

Larry wasn't suffering from dementia and he succinctly, very coherently, gave a remarkable assessment of why he objectively percieved himself as # 1 . The subtle context elaborated by the host ,guest of Larry's obstacles, inherent vices , that placed him at #10 as opposed to Larry's subjective opinion of himself at the apex top wasn't mean spirited ,desparaging his legacy antagonisticism ,it was based upon rational observations. Larry Holmes has full command of his faculties,he didn't obsorb a tremendous amount of punishment, he always essentially articulated himself inthe same verbal ,decorum from his professional boxing youth until now ,his masterful intrinisic boxing style ,which consisted of a excellent defensive strategy intertwined with extraordinary offensive aplomb was why he left the profession with his braincells intact . There's nothing debilitating about Larry Holmes aesthetic or verbiage in this segment. I don't objectively percieved Larry Holmes as #1 , currently or during that moment ,but he's sure better than #10 by at least 6 / 7spots minimum.

@davissinclair4945
@davissinclair4945 8 ай бұрын
Norton got the best of Joe in the sparring sessions before the Jamaica title defense against Foreman. That is what worried Eddie Futch who trained both of them. Joe got lazy, out of shape and treated George like a nobody even though he repeated Joe's performance with an Olympic gold medal. Big mistake only to get clobbered out in 2 rounds. The Frazier of 1969 - 1971 has a better chance of beating George. He was in better shape, he was faster moving his head, faster getting inside and his punches were snappier. The way he fought Chuvalo who was a strong guy himself, was the way he should have fought Foreman. Stay low, stay close, work off the hip with his punches. With that being said, George's greatest wins were against Frazier and Norton. Moorer was his best win as old George in the 1990s.

Context ,a retired , Ali, envious of Holmes ,his former sparring partners ascension into becoming a dominant heavyweight champ after his retirement,, challenged and began desparaging Larry Holmes who had obsolutely no desire to validate his reign by wanting a match against the great Muhammad Ali. Larry Holmes was placed in a lose ,lose , predicament, no matter what the bouts outcome ,he was only going to intensify the irrational angst by the nonobjective fans ,media against him . Larry Holmes isn't supposed to give his assessment about his victory while Muhammad Ali was granted limitless access to vocalize his triumphant success ? I'm.a Muhammad Ali fan ,in the ring and outside of it from a spiritual ,ethic cultural nonliberal,African American male perspective but I'm also objective ,Larry Holmes was never going to succeed at winning over his detractors after the Muhammad Ali bout ,if he won but struggled ,he would be deemed subpar ,if he demolished Ali ,he merely beat a old man .Larry Holmes reserved the right to be just as adamantly outspoken on his win over Muhammad Ali,as Ali was in his victories . Muhammad Ali shouldn't have taken the bout ,Larry Holmes was actually sympathetic towards him in the ring ,he could have savagely pummeled him into a early brutal stoppage . Go look at Ali and his record in the 60s. Old men and a few light heavyweight fighters . Also over the hill guys, has beens and never was guys. Seriously Archie Moore was almost 49, Doug Jones,Henry Cooper twice, Karl Milldenberger, Chuvalo,Patterson, Liston who may have been past 40 years old, Zora Foley, Brian London, a shot Cleveland Williams and a bunch of other no names. Most of the guys I named are cruiserweight or light heavyweights. Chuvalo made Ali piss blood for a week. He was 6 ft and barely 200 pounds soaking wet. Yet Ali couldn't knock him out or down . When you peel back the layers of BS and look at him objectively instead of a defied light you can clearly see he's like most of the great HW champs. A few really good fighters and mostly nobody's. Ali is one of the greatest no doubt. His competition is better in the 70s. One other thing his trainer Angelo Dundee had a brother named Chris who was very close with Frankie Carbo. Big time Mafia guy. Guess who he controlled ? Sonny Liston!! These are facts not some conspiracy crap. To me it explains why the second fight with Liston was so easy. Ali himself knew Liston took a dive. Even their first fight is shady as hell once you know the background. Knowing about boxing is way more than listening to talking heads,KZfaq and looking up records on Google.

Who has Bert fought! He is not as knowledgeable as Larry the champion. I will take Larry's list and put Bert's list in the trash can.

I guarantee you Larry Holmes doesn't know 1% of what Bert Sugar knows about boxing history. Larry was full of shit during his career and after it, probably before his career too
