It's not really accurate that he was using the word incorrectly in the film though. To him those things were in fact unimaginable. The gag was that he was using it so often to describe so many things that it served to illustrate that he wasn't very smart despite being a self described genius.

I'd say "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." is right up there with "Inconceivable".
@elwoodblues9613
@elwoodblues9613 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Inigo Montoya explained his plan to the Man In Black, and that was it. Until the climax, when he used that phrase repeatedly to come back from near death to finally getting his revenge on his father's killer. Not a running joke. Now, "Inconceivable!" ends when Vizzini dies halfway through the movie, but is still such a good running gag that it's entered into popular usage. The problem with that, though, is I do not think it means what they think it means.

One of my favorite running gags was from the 1980s John Cusack comedy movie 'Better Off Dead' where he keeps getting chased by the paper boy on his bike yelling 'I want my two dollars!' Heck, the boy even skied down a mountain on his bike following John Cusack during that skiing race. John, just pay the boy already! LOL

Another one from that movie is the running joke of the Sheriff of Rottingham constantly mixing up his words. Also Ahchoo's name getting a response of 'bless you'. Airplane has SO many uses of great running gags, it it's ridiculous... the religious people in the airport seeking donations, any passenger listening to Ted talk about his past with Elaine committing suicide, Ted's "drinking problem", the inappropriate questions the pilot keeps asking Joey, Dr. Rumack saying "I just want to tell you both good luck - we're all counting on you" , and McCrosky saying "I guess I picked the wrong week to quit ______, and more. I especially like the "what is it?"/"that's not important right now" exchanges. [The times when one character informs another about something important that happened, the listener repeating a key word back and adding "What is it?" (to ask exactly what's up), and the first character giving the literal dictionary definition for the repeated word, followed by "that's not important right now." For example: Dr. Rumack: "This woman has to be gotten to a hospital." Elaine: "A hospital? What is it?" Dr. Rumack: "It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now." The movie has SO many cleverly-written lines and running gags, most of which stand up today, it sets a precident. With "Airplane", the Zucker brothers joined Mel Brooks in setting the standard for spoof movies, both of whom helped make the genre more widely popular. Sadly, the sequel was funny, but no where near as hilarious and witty as the original (it had its moments, but too many gags were carried over from the first film, like the line of people waiting their turn to hit/maim the hysterical woman.) Personally, "Airplane" (along with 4 Mel Brooks' movies: "Spaceballs", "History of the World Part 1, "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein") make up half the list of my top 10 favorite comedy movies ever. (I'm not including stand-up comedy acts - I view that as a separate genre of its own.) One last thing: For anyone who hasn't seen "Airplane", I highly recommend watching it. And while some jokes are a bit dated, only a few that would hard to understand without context (like referencing old tv ads or practices no longer used, i.e. credit card machines.). But all in all, most of the jokes have proven timeless. It's an absolutely side-splitting movie, chock full of silly but clever humor, one that I believe shouldn't be missed!

Karen Fahel There is also an air of respect for those who helped create the movie when you take the time to read their name at the end. The people behind the camera; off screen; in the background; behind the computer etc etc, don't get the same recognition that the actors do. Sometimes, they don't even get their name in the credits. While your kids are looking for some little bonus at the end of a movie, most of the other "credit-sitters" have either worked on a movie themselves, know somebody who has or went to college for film making/3d animation and have found a respect for those countless names scrolling by too fast to read.

+SpikeStarkey I heard there was this rule for the writing credit. Only the first writer and the final 2 writers have credit counting towards the Writer's Guild. If there's 4 of more writers, then the film is either independently made or not involving the Writer's Guild. This also adds another slam if the movie is bad: "So the movie closes and I'm shocked to learn there were FOUR WRITERS who penned their name on this! FOUR WRITERS! How did they still mess up? Did not one of them even try to re-read the script, or were they all in separate rooms, or...what?

Arnold Schwarzenegger saying "I'll be back." (Numerous movie franchises) and "Trust me." Clint Eastwood, "Feel lucky?" and "Make my day." (Dirty Harry) Sylvester Stallone had things he repeated in both Rocky and Rambo. The Other Guys was running gags all the way through it, that was what it was based on. Same with the Austin Powers and Wayne's World franchises. If just repeating something in the same movie is called a running gag, then hundreds of movies out there do it. Princess bride was just one movie. Stan Lee or Bones McCoy or Marty McFly or Mad Max are golden because there are variations that make it valued.

Police Academy is one big pile of running gags. Most better than what they actually featured. I mean i see how Stan Lee being in almost any movie was an ongoing thing. But to me it's something that just became a thing and wasn't really funny. They talked about running gags getting better with every instance but the Stan Lee thing was used so often, it was just an amusing fact.

"1.21 Jigawatts? 1.21 Jigawatts?" As a tech geek, that one seriously grates on my nerves.😐 And the technology is available to fix it. Christopher Lloyd is still alive to do the fix. They never have. I guess that was an intentional running gag. And what about this one: "What's the matter, McFly? Are you chicken?"

+lorah cripps having a life isn't sad, but there are so many good movies mentioned in this list. You don't have much of a life if you haven't seen them.

wow this list couldn't possibly be more wrong. They got some of the movies right but did not get the correct gags.Big Lebowski "That rug really held the room together man." is far more known than the Vietnam gag.Princess bride. "my name is Inigo Montoya you killed my father now prepare to die."and many more.

I'd say they got "Inconceivable" right. They had to make a choice, and either of those jokes would have worked.
