Dude, the original Phantasy Star was amazing. Those "bland" 3D dungeons were back in the day so different than anything you ever saw and mapping them out on graph paper was the normal. And pretty much every RPG of that era was a grindfest. I'm always baffled why more people don't fondly remember that game. And the remake helps a lot making it enjoyable to play right up to today.

For the most part I was fine with the mechanics of Wild ARMs XF. I think they had several neat ideas there, like having access to most class abilities and leveling up only to use those while other classes, or many battles being puzzles rather than slug-fests. I especially loved the fight against the necromancer, where the path to victory wasn't trying to actually fight him, but letting the old trope of a madman being torn apart by his own creations play out. Buuuut yeah, the vitality system was annoying, ESPECIALLY during that one battle where the boss was at the end of a horde of enemies meant to waste time (and thus vitality) and had a weapon that did more damage the less vitality you had.

Infinite space is still one of my favorite games ever, due to the incredible story, epic, with some great plot twists and unforgetable characters, a neat ship upgrading sytem and some suikoden vibes, in the way you recruited your crew. But yeah, the game was hampered by the weird and dry combat system, and I would add that the handheld DS hardware was a limitation to convey the scale and the epicness of some of the events in the story - maybe developing it on home consoles would have made the story a little more justice. Still a very memorable game imho, for me the good definitely outweighs the bad.
@peachesandcream87533 жыл бұрын
When it comes to Resonance of Fate, using the Bezel Crystals (Hero attacks) requires strategy and shouldn't be used willy-nilly because the moment you use them all/take enough damage to reduce the amount you have you go into panic mode and then it's mostly game over from there. The awkwardly designed battle sets aren't actually awkward at all, they are there to hide behind so you don't take damage when it's the enemies turn and using a hero action to get to a cover, especially if it's on the other side of the field, is usually a very good strategy. Machine guns do scratch damage, this is damage that quickly changes your enemies health bar from green to blue by a certain amount but cannot kill them and is temporary, while hand guns do direct damage which is permanent damage that physically lowers your enemies HP and will kill them but it takes longer. You need to lower your enemies health with scratch damage and then deal the final blow with your characters who wield hand guns. Leaving your hero actions for your machine gunner is usually best because if you get enough scratch damage you can instantly kill an enemy with a shot of direct damage if you can fill their entire health bar in blue BUT *once* *you've* *dealt* *scratch* *damage* *always* *use* *a* *hand* *gun* *to* *deal* *permanent* *damage* *otherwise* *that* *scratch* *damage* *will* *heal.* You should also use this time to target multiple enemies and deal scratch damage to use your bezel crystals and hand gun characters efficiently. Your two hand guns should be behind cover who pop out to deal permanent damage once you've lowered the target with scratch. You also need to charge shots: fewer charges mean more but weaker barrage of shots (great for dealing with multiple shields) while more charges mean fewer but more powerful shots (best for a single powerful shield). It's actually a really clever and imaginative battle system but it's so difficult to learn because the tutorial isn't that great.

The battle system is definitely hard to grasp at the beginning though. And I agree about the random terrain/barriers just being frustrating rather than adding any tactical value. The worst part is definitely how fragile you are, he's not kidding when he says that if one of your party members go down you basically lose a fight guaranteed. However, once you get a good grasp on the battle system I find it mostly trivial to avoid this situation. As for the rest of the game, I really like the gun customization and I kind of like the tile system for unlocking different pathways on the levels, gives generic exploration a much more rewarding feel imo.

I didn't have much trouble with Phantasy Star's map, also the game has the nice quality of life of allowing you to save anywhere, which was a pleasant surprise I didn't expect a 8-Bit era JRPG to allow you that especially when comparing with the first DQ/FF games (a damn shame that Phantasy Star 2 removes that option), but it made the game much less frustrating as you could save anywhere a loss was never to big, and quite frankly the only boss I felt a bit to hard was the second to last boss with him attacking all your team in each turn for seemingly random damage, this was the only boss I felt was really a pain in the ass. In any case I would have put Ni No Kuni in here, the story was interesting, the graphics and musics were gorgeous and exploration was actually nice but the combats I couldn't stand them or more I was so freaking bored with the combat that every bosses felt like a drag, it's just not fun to play and I especially hate it when it turns into a Pokemon wannabe.

It's more like a rogue like. You rely on the counter to make it further during your first play through because your not strong enough without it. But on subsequent playthroughs you rely on it less as you keep experience gained when you start over. You also unlock different paths an find better equipment and the story unfolds with each play. It's a short game and by your 3rd time you should have enough d- counter left to complete the game. There's a really crazy exploit that lets you manipulate the games save system to give yourself unlimited experience! By using it you can end the game in your first or second playthrough. Each afterward will be a cake walk. I personally loved this game once I understood it😅.

Is it me, or is Wild Arms Crossfire, especially from your description, fighting with a Lunar: Dragon Song syndrome? It has a vitality system that has you lose HP? It also has horrible time limits and escort missions which just make me want to stop from ever playing it. The game on the surface I think looks great.....but, well....damn. Legend of Legacy is not a game I have heard you discuss before....at least I think. The basis of the exploration with everything growing up into the screen reminds me of Bastion but tbh, its really cool it was inspired by the saga games and it was eventually morphed into Alliance Alive, another game I have heard so many good things about and still have not played. Mimana's overworld and battle screens, to me, look fun and attractive to look at, at least in this video. Although, I think its strange every enemy seems to be a square or triangle......um....yeah, does that change? Infinite Space is another game I don't think I've ever heard of and it just looks like it would have fallen flat on me if I had tried it. Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter was and is one of the biggest and most horrifying mistakes in any great JRPG game series. I have no idea why it was developed and so badly and radically changed. This list was informative and made me mad at the same time. Some games are made with such unjustifiably bad decisions for progression, overworld and battle when they otherwise could have been fantastic. Great video!

The Legend of Legacy should be on the opposite list, as a huge fan of SaGa series I have no issue with the gameplay but the story... WHAT STORY? You have an introduction cut scene to the main character you choose while your 8 other party members get nothing unless you choose them on a new game. The story pretty much you exploring the world and selling completed maps. I know the SaGa games aren't known for having huge stories and is more about exploration but The Legend of Legacy feels like it was made by a person who watched 30 minutes of a let's play of UNLIMITED Saga...not like people who actually worked on several games in the series. It's better than SaGa 3 Jikuu no Hasha and Final Fantasy II,but not by much.

One game that I loved the story but have an avarage gameplay is Phanton Brave for PS2/PSP, I seriusly fell in love for that story, the gameplay however can be a little frustrating since every summon allies have limit to stay on the field except for the summoner
@alenezi989a33 жыл бұрын
Yes I loved that game and the world it was set in, loved the islands and the story, the battle system was what basically ruined the game for me, the problem it could've played like any other NIS SRPG but they choose to ruin it with the stupid limited summon system.

Yeah, I really wish the Breath of Fire franchise didn't kill itself with Dragon Quarter and whatever that stupid mobile game is. What a shame. :/

18:57 - There were many, MANY questionable choices in Dragon Quarter. If you just took the main story of the game, it's over in about ten hours. The SOL system is literally a way to artificially lengthen the game by making you replay large segments of the game to see ore of the plot. Worse, the counter that you get for the game literally adds a time limit to finish the game. And yes, I said a time limit. Saying it isn't a time limit is the equivalent of EA calling Loot Boxes 'Surprise Mechanics'. People have tried arguing this with me by saying it only ticks down when you move or take actions, but battles are random and the game still limits how much you can do per playthrough. This is still a time limit, regardless of how much you try to redefine it.

Good list with some rare games, Baroque was such a good story, it had this awesome idea of trying to kill god to save this fallen world. There is a manga out there thats easy-ish to find, it was cool to.

I managed to understand the combat of Resonance of Fate in the demo and loved it, but picking it up years afterwards I could not get into it in the slightest. Incredible world and story, fantastic music too. Wish it was less "it has to click with you or forget it".

i think i did a run with no sol on breath of fire dq... :) i think that if you're complaining about the sol system, is due to a gitgud attitude ... also the save point system: i think we in europe got more save point items.. frankly i think you're VERY wrong on this.. as for resonance of fate.. you're terribly wrong.. the story is VERY nice, and the battle system just clicks as you get better with it....
@phoenixxxashez Жыл бұрын
Funnily enough, I understand the gripes you have with Baroque, but it isn't really that frustrating when you know what you're doing and you're prepared. Also you're expected to die a lot in order to progress the story. If I remember correctly I even beat it once on the ps2 version.

I don't remember much I of Resonance of Fate except that once I got the hang of battle, it just became an exercise of repeating the winning formula over and over again. No real challenge, no variation and no fun. One of these days I want to give it another chance, maybe I missed something.

I can add: Nier/Drakengard series - the gameplay is... well. normal, without anything special and some can call it outdated even at the release. But the story.. .It's great, with many interesting plot twists and not so usual characters. Tokyo Twilight Ghost hunters - strange choice, but still: some would drop the game after few missions because of how fucked up gameplay of the battle is. But the story is quite intresting and the final act is worth every nerve. Good story and some interesting characters. Final Fantasy 10 - sorry, I say it first: I love FF, played almost all titles. I don't like Yuna and still think that Lu and Rikku are far better (but that's my tastes). Battle system in 10 is broken, the moment you can add some OP options to the weapon and armor of Yuna... at least 3 characters becames useless. Add Tidus and Wakka and you can run over almost any monster... The story on the other hand is good, very (and that is coming from somebody, who don't like Tidus x Yuna).

It REALLY saddens me that Xenoblade Torna required sidequests to progress. The base game of Xenoblade 2 had quite a bit of fan service which made it difficult for me to recommend to other people. Xenoblade Torna literally removed most of it and fixed a lot of issues with the base game I had but I still wasn't willing to recommend it because of how many side quests were required.

@Massiveillusion143 жыл бұрын
When Dragon Quarter wasn't number 1 it got me worried, but then I saw what was and I completely understood. RoF doesn't necessarily have a BAD battle system, but it is incredibly complex with a bunch of moving parts which make accurate damage calculation nearly impossible.

for me, it's the original final fantasy tactics. the difficulty is all over the place, it's too easy to exploit, + every time you play the same exact builds are best. the gameplay is improved majorly in FFT advance + advance 2, but the original's story is SO SO good

I was disappointed with Legend of LEgacy "gameplaywise" too. But Story was great! Happy Alliance Alive showed they learned from the bad gameplay part (as in not getting bored so quickly)! I love when developers learn from their previous mistakes (severe or not, the point of moving forward is I'd say gameplay was trying to play like Star Ocean then Tales of! but yep, this game's gameplay showed me how no matter good the story. If the gameplay You just had to hurt me with this game, as I never got to play it, even though I wanted to (I regret never pre-ordering this game as like when I stupidly sold Path of Radiance. I never was able to FIND THE DAMN GAME AGAIN!!). Hell I would have tolerated the gameplay (And I HATED Unlimited SaGa at the time this game was out) Almost bought this game because my Wii needed RPG....too bad my last chance to buy this game, I got Xenoblade at this time. And I love my Xeno games (Truth be told, I was on the fence with Xenogears and Saga! Xenoblade I loved because it was a COMPLETE STORY! Which is why I had my issues with the other Xeno games before that, not that I hated them or not). I'm happy I passed and watch the story on KZfaq! I enjoyed Shadow Hearts, and wanted to try to find this game (To learn more about Harley's Parents first adventure together LOL)....but it's gameplay made me (Fuck the fact you can fuck yourself over if you forgot ONE TINY DETAIL early on and miss the one part to avoid the Non-standard game over all because you were expected to "SEE THE FUTURE) Gameplay wasn't too bad for me (Tactics games were my PSP spirit animals ). But I will agree with you that the gameplay was not as great as it was, (Plus FUCK ESCORT MISSIONS IN TACTICS! Especially when the developers think fake difficulty is "smart game design!" Other Tactics games like Three Houses did their time limits alot better as you really have to be quite terrible at the game or doing it on purpose to actually SEE the time limit, and time limit on certain maps are VERY GENEROUS Much so compared to THIS GAME in my opinion). Another game I watch the story on KZfaq (But largely cause I lost it AND MY PSP while playing half-way like a FUCKING KLUTZ!!) Oh no, I agree with you that the gameplay in this was TERRIBLE! Story was fun (But I can only play it on my switch because at least THAT GIVES YOU A MAP! Etrian Odyssey spoiled me LOL. Enemy challenges were not to bad only because I never ran and RNG hated me enough to cause alot of battles to happen! Resulting in me usually being OVERLEVELED! I had to use a guide just to stay in the level zone of that part of the story for some challenge....). Man remember the days when Female Led Stories were rare, that's when they were well written and unique....not like now where the only rare part is them being good and unique! To be fair, Torna's story was made better because of Xenoblade 2 story! (Ironically I compare it to Tales of Zestiria and Berseria! Some of the elements of Zestiria 's story were abit suspect if not "out of nowhere!" that made it annoying! But it made Berseria better when those elements showed up as Zestiria established them already, and they were able to expand on them more, making me love those concepts rather then hate them like I originally did in Zestiria, and even when I replay Zestiria, I no longer hate seeing them when their brought up). Loved how it was like a playable version of a certain "backstory" part of Xenogears story/lore (you know the one that result in the creation of every-bodies favorite "Emperor of Darkness" Darth Vader Knockoff LOL). Much better detailed (seeing as your playing through history) and did a good job improving Xenoblade 2's main story. Admission here, I bought Xenoblade 2 when it first came out, but never played it till I got Torna "Three Months ago!" before I started playing the main story right after getting it!....I chose play and beat the main story BEFORE playing it....and WOW was that the best Idea I ever made as I think I would have devalued BOTH STORIES if I had played them out of order! But yeah I agree with everything you just said about the Quests! I was able to tolerate the horror better then you did (though I'm still on the "fuck this game" bandwagon with you! I saw that ending coming I mile away even though I knew this was a Prologue when they pushed all those quests on you! Likely to try to get you to "like these's side characters" before "you know what" happens to them! Cute the first time around! BAD in future runs when you know what happens already and it becomes a VERY ANNOYING PROGRESSION WALL!). But seriously one annoying thing doesn't come off as "bad gameplay!" (I almost thought you hated the battle system of Torna for a second!).....but I will agree that I would prefer playing "Tiger Tiger" then do those quests again! (Ironic as I hated tiger Tiger till I played Torna and I was thinking while completing those quests that I wanted to play Tiger Tiger again despite hating it...weird?) Going to say it now. I don't like games that require you to die and reload New Game + to get everything of the story! (Dead Rising 1,2 & 3 were good only because you only used this mechanic for getting stronger if you fucked up previously! NOT TO SEE THE WHOLE STORY!). It's good for New Game + playthroughs (where the game's story is abit different ONLY when going into a New Game + playthrough! Basically adds freshness) Bad if the game is all about being unfairly hard and bullshit just to force you to use the mechanic....and not explain till you fucked yourself over (Roguelikes like Tanglewood do this! But they do it better because YOUR WARNED ABOUT IT FROM THE START and how to prepare for later runs, rather then sucker punching you). Fuck SOL! And fuck how they fucked with the Dragon System again (it's like they didn't learn or better they forgot how they FUCKED THAT UP IN BOF2!!!!! It's like they learned not to make it near worthless in BOF3 & 4. Then had a brain fart and forgot why they were improving it and went in the opposite direction again like in BOF2! Only worse) Capcom really should have not tried to mix Resident Evil/De into their RPG! Even when I understood! ROF was still garbage! Story was really the ONLY THING PUSHING ME FORWARD! And the main characters! But the gameplay was split between Great when it worked. And terrible when it fucks you over! (Ironic that I actually WANTED forced story Tutorials for once rather then forcing you to go to the Arena for it.....if you remember you have to go there FOR IT!!!!) To be fair with all you listed! Their "Bad Gameplay" to me anyway were still tolerable enough to deal with them just for the story and character's alone (Well minus BOF5 & Barogue! Thank god for KZfaq...well at the time before the "Copyright Bots and Strike" system anyway). Hope to see your list of "Excellent Story with TERRIBLY UNFORGABABLE BAD GAMEPLAY" video! PEace

I recommend that you play the game to make up your own mind. Reviewers are always going to be subjective. By the way, there are reviewers that like Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter and they are also well known ones like Erick. I personally loved the game. Its gameplay is a lot of fun with the combos. It isn't actually a hard game to beat and the whole replay thing is blown out of proportion. It gets more difficult towards the end, but like with any JRPG, if you prepare well, it isn't a problem.
