My favorite Mat moment is when he is having the accomplishment competition with Rand. Rand - "I cleansed Saidin". Mat - "I saved Moiraine".

By far my favorite is that one scene where Mat thinks there is something wrong with the city he is in because no one has tried to rob and kill him. Then someone shows up and tries to rob and kill him. He swiftly dispatches the bad guys and then proceeds to go on his way thinking that it is a fine city after all.

One of my favorite Mat things is his constant denial about HIS influence on Olver. He’s always blaming the way Olver interacts with women on everyone in the band but himself. It’s hilarious.

Personally my favorite has always been how he accidentally got married after spending the majority of the books running and hiding as desperately as he could from it

One of my favorite Mat scenes is during the Last Battle when he decides he needs to get a better feel for things than he can from a command tent. He rides out on Pips and fights a bit, looking at the battle lines. Then he comes back to the command tent and is like "Huh... Gareth Bryne is a darkfriend."

Honestly, you know what's a moment I like, that I realized only after rereading? Mat stays with rand the ENTIRE time they are on the run to Camelyn in the eye of the world. Mat, who at this point, is a little shit, is corrupted by the dagger, and has slowly and steadily been shown as becoming untrustworthy and shutting himself off from the world, stays with rand, even when rand is "sick" it shows that the most important thing to him, his loyalty, is still there, and even the dagger cannot take it entirely from him.

Not strictly a Mat moment, but loads of times between Mat Perrin and Rand when they're apart, I've always loved the fact that when they're talking to women they all wish that the other two would know what to say. I feel like that's so real to life with mates.

I loved when Mat and Perrin were reunited. Mat tossing little rocks at Perrin from behind a tree and then asking if he wanted to let loose a badger on the green before he steps into view.

One of my favorite mat moments is his letter to Elayne

"it has to be there at the last battle, nothing says it can't be used before then"

My favourite Mat "arc" is him being a gambling addict who literally cannot lose, and so he cannot find people who'd play against him twice. He wins against a person with loaded dice. He gets another person to roll the dice for him, to try and negate his luck. He bets that he can hit a small moving target with a throwing knife while blindfolded, at night, and he DOES. And then nobody ever bets against him in knife-throwing, either. He wants to feel challenges, but he's so good that the only way to feel challenge, is for him to lead armies against the forces of darkness. Who have centuries of experience.

So for me there are two missing things here 1: Rescuing Moiraine from the tower 2: Using Hinderstap villagers in the last battle

I really liked the lines where Egwene was deciding whether or not to let Mat take over the entire army. That anecdote where Mat had been laughed at for jumping into a river to save a child but it turned the child was just going for a swim. He said the next time, he'd let them drown. But then, the next time, a child really was drowning, and Mat was in the river again in an instant.

Daniel: The Pattern sucks, man. Pattern: MMMMMMMMMMMMM. Liessssss.

Nynaeve’s fear when she realizes she can’t do anything to Mat as he slowly advances is just priceless.

Criminally underappreciated moment- right after Mat wakes up in The Dragon Reborn, Lanfear walks in on him alone wearing nothing but a blanket and shoving chicken in his mouth like a goddamn animal. And by the end of their conversation he realizes she's up to no good, which Dumbass Al'Thor didn't figure out for an entire book.

“Matrim Cauthon is one of the finest men you will ever know, Your Highness, and I won’t listen to ill speech of him. What’s right is right.” “He saved my life,” the marath’damane said. “Rescued me at great cost and personal danger when no other thought to come for me.” Her eyes were afire with anger. “Yes, he drinks and gambles far too much. But don’t speak of him as if you know him, because you don’t. His heart is golden, under it all. If you’ve hurt him…”

You should have said be here at your own "cauthon"

In the last book, when he and Rand are showing off their accomplishments and Mat goes like ‘Well, I rescued Moiraine from another dimension’

In her conversation Egwene- Tuon: "He is the Prince of the Ravens now, a position he earned by his marriage to me. He serves the Seanchan, the Crystal Throne, and the Empress." Mat: "May she live forever." Just that casual nonchalance in such a tense, momentous scene captures Mat so perfectly for me. Cracks me up every time.

Daniel I can't believe this scene didn't make your list. It is in my top 5 Mat moments. I laughed mt head off the first time I read this... and many times after as well. On the slopes of Rhuidean ... Mat began with his belt knife and kept right on, pulling knives from his sleeves and under his coat, even one from down the back of his neck, fashioning a pile that seemed to impress even the Aiel women. He made as if to stop, looked at the women, then took two more from each boot top. “I forgot them,” he said with a grin and shrug. The Wise Ones’ unblinking looks wiped his grin away.

Courage to strengthen,” Noal whispered, stepping forward, holding up a lantern with a flickering flame. “Fire to blind. Music to dazzle. Iron to bind.” “And Matrim Cauthon,” Mat added. “To bloody even the odds.”

Mat and his relationship with Talmanes is one of my favorites, the humor between them is sublime

My funniest line to me in the entire series comes from book 3: 'The Dragon Reborn' and of course...its from Matt... "Blood and ashes...how many flaming people are on the rooftops tonight?" Re read after re read I LMAO.

One of my favourite Mat moments is when he speaks with Birgette; "Speak we what language, Sounder of the Horn?"

It was about a hero who insisted with every breath that he was anything but a hero.

I love Mat spending hours writing out complex back stories for everyone before they go into a village. Part of me wanted to read the back stories, but honestly just imagining what they could possibly be is more fun.

SPOILERS Crown of Swords My favorite Mat moment is when he first meets the gholam. Sees a battlefield of a hallway, is tossed aside like a plaything, his friend's throat is torn out, and as he's about to do the smart thing and run, he hears Elayne breath. Guy just turns around, says he has a promise, and charges with nothing but a medallion as a weapon.

What about the bit where he breaks into the Stone of Tear and saves the girls to their utmost surprise? Brilliantly written. Also his friendship with Birgitte was fantastic and I hope they do it well on the show.

For "about Mat" scenes, you really can't beat the conversation Birgitte has with the girls after her drunken conversation with Mat. "You owe him thanks on your knees". (The actual conversation is phenomenal as well - the shock of recognition, and his bewilderment at her behavior - drinking, swearing, checking out the hotties - or non-hotties in Birgitte's case. I love it).

I think the line about the band cheering and joking when Matt gets reunited with them and are silenced by merely raising his polearm is incredible as well in that scene from Tuon's perspective.

I really liked the moment when Mat was finally thanked for saving the three from the stone of Tear. It showed that it wasn't so much the lack of a thank you but that they seemed to think it was unnecessary. Like their friendship with him ment less to them then it did to him. My take away anyway.

It's been a long time since I've read the series, so I don't remember the details, but one of the Mat moments I enjoyed a lot was when he danced (in a tavern?) dances that were long forgotten. Memories that become legend and all that. Made me feel nostalgic and sad about everyone missing out on so much that is lost.

Matt's boot monologue definitely reminds me of another reluctant but determined hero and his views on socioeconomic expressed via boots. I am of course speaking of the Mr. Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch

"I saved Moraine"

One of my favorites is at the end when he's evading the deathwatch guard while preparing for the Last Battle, and he meets up with Egwene. And she says to him something to the effect of "I have never known anyone to work so hard to avoid hard work." A single sentence that just sums him up so well

One of my favorite Mat moments is with the Seafolk. Daughter of the Sands indeed 😂

“A little honest work wouldn’t kill you, Mat.” “Now, you know that’s not true. Soldiering is honest work, and it gets men killed all the bloody time.” ----- *spoilers* I genuinely love any scene with Mat and Birgitte hanging out, just two friends blowing off their responsibilities to go hang out and drink. One scene that comes to mind is when Birgitte finds Mat gambling with her guards, after he was “caught” sneaking into the castle. I love how this shows to the reader Mat’s charisma and that the soldiering lifestyle is a natural fit.

Where would Matt and Rand's little contest trying to top each other over who's been through and suffered the most rank?

No mention of the reuniting with Moranne in the tower of genjai? Honestly, the entire tower would probably be my favorite Matt scene even if Jain and Thom also are there sharing the scene. Just, his bartering with the foxes is fantastic when he realizes what price he has to pay and how everything is framed.

Top 10 Bela moments, cmon dude

The burning building scene has always been a favorite of mine. It gets speaks well to both characters, both Mat's sense of reckless loyalty and the observer's insight. On a different topic, the Odin motifs surrounding Mat are some of my favorite references to our own mythologies. It's not the obvious choice for his character, but it is the right one.

Love when rand and Mat reunite and one up each other. O and there is a badger.

My favorite Matt moment is when he goes into the battlefield for the first time in a Memory of Light to take the Pulse of the battle and captures enemy channeler

Aw! My favorite moment is when Matt tells the Seanchan man that's he's not an assassin. Such a badass moment!

Spoiler ... .... ....... ........ ......... Mat saving egwene elayne and nyanaeve in tear is also one of my favorite part. This is the first Mat big accomplishment on his own and not because of the voices in his head. This is where we learn how genuinely amazing this guy is that he destroyed the wall of tear alone to save his friends. He didn't knew he was going to get help from aiel or rand, he still went to save his friends. One of my favorite mat moments.

I think my favorite is the Tuon moment when she see's him for Real. Wow. Loved it immensely. Still look forward to that moment of reread. The best.

I agree with most of this list. Though for me personally I'd remove the darkhound one and put in the scene when he's traveling with the circus and gets fed up with how high and mighty the Aes Sedai are being so he goes in and spanks them. I think it's just a fun scene where they get what's coming to them and he gets some cathartic relief after all the shit he's going through

Reading WoT for a second time and I just read this moment from Winters Heart that I love. The Aelfinn always gave true answers. “We are taking them with us,” he said. At last, Tuon showed expression. She smiled, as if she suddenly knew a secret. She smiled, and he shivered. Oh, Light, how he shivered.

I think my favorite "moment" is really more of a sequence; when he masters his "luck" for the first time with the footpads leaving Tar Valon to finding the girls in Tear; the pacing of that is just awesome

One of my fav comedic moments is the extent to which Mat invents the backstories and characters for their schemes in the latter books. Its a common trope, but made me lol with the execution

That moment with eggy is extra special because she recognizes what he did for her and thanks him. All the girls get a hard time for how they treat him but you get to see that love and respect between good friends here. I love Mats POV on the road to Ebou Dar, the power struggle with Elayne, the women trying to figure out his medallion, how he reacts when they do, how he randomly hands them what they need as soon as they get there, even if they are unable to see or use it till later. From TDR on Mat may be my favourite character in a book that i have read, he brings comedy, excellent action, and things to think about to the story, he brings what books one and two are missing imo.

How could we leave out the scene where Lan tricks him into revealing that he has suddenly become a master strategist? Also, possibly unpopular opinion here, but as much as I love the the way Sanderson finished the series I never really thought he found Matt's voice. He did great with most characters but I think his portrayal of Matt was slightly below par🤷🏻‍♂️ Oh and big spoiler here * * * * * * He freaking rescued one of the most important characters from another freaking dimension. All of his interactions with the snakes and foxes are actually excellent.

Matt’s duel is epic! I loved how Hammar reminds all the students how the best warded ever was beaten.

Tuons recognition is one of my favorite bits. Gives me goosebumps.

Mat rambling about how awful his chair is when traveling with the band before hinderstap was one of my favourite funny mat moments. AND when he explains why women are infuriating by explaining how it would be like to play dice against them.

I laughed out loud at the comment Mat made to Galad (sp?) about fighting against people with quarterstaves. It was in either the last book or the second to last. I don't laugh out loud often, but that one got me. Definitely my favorite Mat moment. (edit: this relates to your number 2)

Also, I think your #5 is tied for my #1. Just chills man. This soon-to-be empress, who has bean treating mat like a Toy, a time waster while other events are in play, realizing that she has been playing with fire and may have come closer to being burned than she thought. To date we hadn't seen anything even ruffle Tuon's feathers yet and seeing Mat as the brilliant leader he is shakes her almost to her core. Just an absolutely brilliant scene and I get chills every time I reread it.

Mat and Julin breaking into the Stone of Tear is one of my favorite moments in the whole series.

Me, out loud, as soon as I realize Daniel is getting to my 100% FAVORITE MATRIM CAUTHON MOMENT, and it’s the #1 moment: “YES OMG YES THANK YOU!!!” Mat is the best friend that ANYBODY could ever ask for, and this moment is just freaking 👌. It shows so damn much of who he is, and it’s an absolute delight that I look forward to in *every* re-read.

That moment with Tuon is so good. He is *seen*, and it is just so gratifying. Definitely a favorite scene of mine.

Damn for whatever reason that quote for number 9 choked me up hard. I love scenes like that in books. I didn't catch that one so well my first time around. Describes his character greatly.

First exposure to the series was in my dads car when I was like 12. He was listening to book 13 and I heard the part where Matt wrecks the Gholam. Needless to say my next 6-9 months were booked from then on out.

Also, good list, but always liked the night he leaves Tar Valon as one of my favourite moments. First time his luck truly starts to manifest.

When I reread the series, this is always one of my favorite scenes that I look forward too, on each turn through the Wheel of Time. The fight between Mat and the Princes is always kicking point for the series that lights the story on fire for me..

Mat is definitely my favourite character in the series. He has so many cool things going for him while also being such a likeable and human character. When I saw this video title appear two months ago, I wanted to watch this video so badly, but I was reading book 10 at the time. I finished Memory of Light 10 minutes ago and here I am. What an end to the story and so many lovely Cauthon moments, I loved it! :) Honestly, without your inspiring videos, I'd never have returned after losing my interest around book 8 two years ago.
