The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is my favorite, and one of my favorite movies. It strikes a surreal balance between realism and lyricism. It feels like an eerie old photograph brought to life. The matter of fact yet poetic narrator makes it feel like real life doesn't have to be overly dramatized, that real life is poetic enough.

The Assassination Of Jesse James is a tremendous movie. People for some reason think its too slow, but I think its perfect in bringing you back to that time in the country. We need a 4K Directors Cut as it is supposedly 3 hours and 15 minutes. That's 35 minutes left out!

Also Bone Tomahawk and Once upon a time in Mexico would make my own list and of course There Will Be Blood ! In no particular order 3:10 to Yuma Sister Brothers Lonesome Dove Tombstone unforgiven Godless Hell or Highwater There will be blood Once Upon a Time in Mexico No Countey For Old Men For A few dollars more Slow west Wind River Sicario Bone Tomahawk Magnificent 7 But -#1 w/ a bullett….DEADWOOD

@@TheGourdKing I disagree. I have a bias as BT is prob my #1 favorite film lol but I'd put Bone Tomahawk above ALL the films on the Honorable Mention list at the VERY least. I'lll keep it off the main list because of the violence but Bone Tomahawk looks, sounds, and feels more authentic/realistic, has better acting, and a richer story than basically every flick here. The Assassination of Jesse James... maybe the only film that looks better

@@TheGourdKing wow, lol! A disagreement in the comment section of a KZfaq video and neither person called the other or was called a "f*****g idiot" or were told to kill themselves!! See? It IS possible!! Jokes aside, obv I'm just a Bone Tomahawk fanboy tho lol! Tho it's basic plot is classic Western fair, it plays out and features some new and refreshingly unique ideas. If you're just a big fan of Westerns, like I am, and like to read at all, you should check out the two Western novels A. Craig Zahler wrote himself... 'A Congregation of Jackals' and 'Wraiths of the Broken Land' Same type of character driven stories like his films, same great dialogue, and of course, his trademark of sporadic bursts of horrific violence!

'The Slanted Gutter' and 'Mean Business on North Ganson Street' are great too. Just a huge fan of this guy rn

All good movies but the order on this is crazy in my humble opinion. Bone tomahawk should be a honorable mention too.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs...? Great video, though. Time to rewatch all of them.

I know it's films, but Cowboy Bebop is my number 1. Best anime and movie combo of all time in terms of westerns imo.

Rango should've at least been an honorable mention

Can't believe that Slow West was nowhere mentioned in the video. it's a great great western film, a muct see to everyone who loves the genre. Also Nocturnal Animals, altough very loosely can be considered as a western, but it always give me the vibe.

Top 3 is obvious: 3. Cowboys vs Aliens 2. A million ways to die in the west. 1. Wild wild west.

I’m not sure if it’s classified as a western, but I thought Quigley down under would make the honorable mentions list.

Tombstone absolutely deserves to be on that list but where is Quigley Down Under or The Magnificent Seven?

Two you missed that are in my top five are "Ride with the devil" and "The Jack Bull" I feel Ride with the devil is the best civil war movie ever made with an oscar worthy performance from Tobey Macguire

Unforgiven is best in this class. Revenant is great, but they should've been more real life accurate. 310 is badass but tombstone beats it for action. I kinda like the missing too. The jesse james coward was boring. True grit wasn't bad either. Unforgiven is one I could pop in and watch nearly anytime.

I'd add "Silverado" to that list, at least as an honorable mention.
