Gran Prix and Le Man will always be the quintessential racing movies. Not just the movies themselves, but how some of the actors like James Garner and Steve McQueen took to driving as a sport, and driving in those movies. It was after those movies where both of those actors always showed driving prowess in their following movies or TV shows and doing the driving themselves.

What i love about Grand Prix is the blend of fiction and reality. We look after the characters while we see Clark, Fangio, Rindt and others. and Graham Hill is such a fun extra the whole movie, always giving his best to not ruin the take. I just love that movie so much.

A little anecdote about the filming of Days of Thunder. One of their camera cars almost had an impact on the Winston Cup championship. During the second last race of the season at Phoenix, all Rusty Wallace had to do to clinch the title was finish in I think the top 10. Close to the end of the race he had it in the bag, but he ended up being taken out by one of the cars shooting viz for the movie. He eventually won the title at the final race, but man was he PISSED.

A great list. Grand Prix-after 50 odd years is still a superb film and deserves the top spot.... Rush and Ford V Ferrari are also great entertainment, and I remember the James V Nikki rivalry..... James partied himself to death at only 45 ....Legend..

Heart Like a Wheel is actually a fond memory of mine. I hadn't heard of it, but boring crap was on the other channels. Now, I had just come back from the pub and just wanted to see something vaguely interesting whilst I ate my midnight cereal. What I tuned into, just after it started felt like Rocky I and Rocky II combined with huge V8s making massive power. If I remember correctly, my mum asked me who Shirley was the next day. I think she thought I was having a wet-dream, but I forgot headphones only reduce the sound going in, not the sound at 1am when you start cheering Shirley Muldownay on in a movie. Yeah, I'm silly, but so is Pokemon.

Great collection, Rush was awesome, have yet to have seen LeMans.... Steve McQueen made it look like he didn't drive in LeMans, though he did, in Bullitt the seen that showed his face then it changed, it's because they would shoot the same seen 8 to 12 times..with each time they shot it the mirror dropped from view. by the time editors get it the Time Line hence time of day would change as well. Believe it or not that is Steve McQueen driving the Mustang in Bullitt, and the Porsche in LeMans Steve McQueen is the original 1st Stunt Driving Actor; I also still have to watch Ford vs. Ferrari as well Great job with the collection of movies and the history behind them 🛤🏎🏁🏆👦🏻👍🏻

I agree that Grand Prix is the best race movie ever; I also rate Rush very highly; Daniel Bruhel's uncanny portrayal of Niki Lauda deserved an Oscar. Ford v Ferrari, however, was so inaccurate I felt like throwing something at the screen. You missed Paul Newman's 1969 movie Winning which, although a bit light on the racing, accurately captured Indy, CanAm, and stock car racing of the era. It is also significant as the film that got Newman into racing; he won his class at LeMans and came close to winning overall.

Being a long-time Cobra buff, who built and owned a replica for 10 years and is aware of how the Cobra came about, the story of Shelby racing in Europe and so on, that movie was a great disappointment. It was well made etc etc, BUT in my opinion, it failed to capture and portray the two main characters - Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles. If you get that wrong, the entire story is wrong.

Thanks. I only just discovered the video not too long ago myself. I find it inspirational in that people feel you need big money to make a film in this day and age. But this is a film that needs to be shown so people can know, car enthusiasts (Especially older muscle cars) exist around the world, and with enough courage to make a film like this, it can be done anywhere and without a great big budget.

Truly true. Not just the movie, but how many actors actually drove hard in that movie. Most of them were students of Bob Bondurant for the making of that movie and become true lovers of auto racing. Not in that movie, but Paul Newman was also a student of Bondurant and would become a great race driver in a life that would superceed his acting career.

Docs will be for another list. To Please a Lady, and Winning was close. Winning missed out since it was mostly rear projection footage. Despite Grand Prix had come out before and Le Mans soon after. Two Lane Blacktop is one of the definitive gear head movies. Fun fact, the 55 Chevy that Harrison Ford drives in American Graffiti is one of the three 55's that was used to make Two Lane Blacktop. Even more fun fact, James Taylor, who'd actually never seen the movie, was reunited a few years back with the principal photography 55 Chevy that he spent so much time in filming the movie courtesy of Jay Leno.

A couple films you missed, what about Paul Newman"s 1967 indy car epic "Winning" ( great soundtrack as well), and Kirk Douglas 1955 The Racers, ( lots of front engine action). If your including the likes of Days of Thunder then why not a couple of Elvis Presley Epics like Viva Las Vegas, Spinout and Speedway a lot cars and good racing footage
@MFPMapFilmProductions
@MFPMapFilmProductions 3 жыл бұрын
I left out a bunch mostly due to those movies having too much rear projection and not having the actors actually seen driving. Winning was disappointing as I knew Paul Newman was big into racing. But since it came soon after Grand Prix and before Le Mans it lost a lot of impact. Plus I did not want to repeat the same type of motor racing more than twice. So only two F1 movies and two Le Mans movies. More inclusive that way.

Le Mans 1970 is solid 2nd ! C'mon, how can anything top the legendary raw authentic cinematography taken straight from the race ? And Rush takes over the Ford vs Ferrari too. One movie you need to watch is Wangan Midnight. Is for free to find on KZfaq. The atmosphere just takes over you. And another one I need to mention is 1935 movie "No Limit". It's a comedy about the Isle of Man TT race. It's really funny but more importantly it is very authentic in the way it shows the TT Mountain Course. The footage have high historical value.

I consider Le Mans to still be the best racing movie. I used to consider Gran Prix to be the best but the musical sound track really puts me off. It didn't bother me the first few times but now I can't get past it. Truly obnoxious music. Also I could do without the trite romantic song and dance distraction. Despite the liberties taken with the facts I really like Ford vs Ferrari since it got close enough to the facts and does a brilliant job of conveying the thrill and sweat of racing in that time. Great list, with some movie that I've not seen yet! While not iconic as the one shown here, there is an almost unkown Italian movie that in my opinion could be worth to be watched. Original title is "Veloce come il vento", but I think the international title is "Italian Race". Is from 2016, here below the original Italian trailer: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/naipmJR8zK_GnJ8.html Enjoy!

I loved Grand Prix but did not think the music fit the film at all.

You loose major points for Days of Thunder. Talledega nights is as good because DOT is trying to be legit, yet is soooo unrealistic is sickening. At least Ricky Bobby is hilarious and not funny for being such a farce. All fast and furious movies are a joke. The rest of this list is great. Rush is truly excellent, way better than Grand Prix. The most accurate of all of them. Personal favorite is the little known Gumball Rally! Fiction, but really captured Brock Yates Cannonball. Even better than Yates own produced comedies based on his illegal cross country contests of madness.

Part of the reason these are "Must See" racing movies is because of their importance and entertainment value. True Days of Thunder is cheesy as. The main reason it is on this list is because it captured NASCAR racing and part of what goes into it, building cars and pit crew relationship, better than other stock car movies before. Grand Prix beat Rush because Grand Prix did something unheard of in racing films up till then, and did it for real. It broke the mold and without it, we would not have a movie like Rush the way it is today.

Ummm... James Gardner? Never heard of him, though I suppose it's a common enough name. There was this GARNER fella... Also, you mention "hiring race drivers in supporting roles" in Grand Prix while showing Yves Montand (snicker).

In Australia, Gardner and Garner sound the same. I noticed that too as I was saying it. I could not find a legit bts image of the racers hired for that photo, so I mentioned the actors as well in the same paragraph.

Why do I feel like Senna should have been on this list? Yes, it is a docu but it's so much more than that.

Rush was spoilt by Howards insistence on non existent antagonism between characters so prevalent in his movies. Lauda vs Hunt was compelling for there totally different lifestyles and racing in reality they were friends off the track.

Ok hear me out. Your gunna laugh. Your gunna roll your eyes. But I think Speed Racer is underrated. YES YES I KNOW its a kids movie. The acting is a little blah. BUT. the emotion the way they talk about racing. The cars and the sounds. The engine building scene for the mach 6 and the first race where he chases his brothers lap time. Idk just give it a watch and tell me. Who ever did the car bits doesnt love cars

Gotta agree with you. It's a fun movie that uses racing more as an allegory for art than it does as a straightforward representation of the sport. The CGI and editing turned off a lot of people when it came out, but it's (justifiably) become a cult favourite since. It's a great mix of racing and science fiction that also serves as a faithful adaptation of the original manga and anime (one of the better adaptations Hollywood has attempted). Many fans in years since have argued that the movie was ahead of its time, and in a world where moviegoers put less emphasis on realism and more on fun and interesting characters and stories (at least, compared to 2008), I'd have to agree with that point as well.

@@ZeusCannonBen i didn't know what it was. Kinda expected a hot wheel knock off. But I see the cover and im like ok looks like these are track cars so im down. And im not saying jts a masterpiece. Im just saying watching the thunder head? Track race reminded me of Lemans and grand prix. And scenes like the big companys center kinda ruin it but I was hooked and I would have liked a sequel. Unfortunately it bombed .

I think that is what makes it so good. Too many other sports and racing movies wanna glorify things too much, like that movie Drive with Stallone a few years back. Don't get me wrong, even those have their place. But I was so disappointed with the ending of Greased Lightning that played to be "true story" then made up a fairytale ending that never happened, not even close. Grand Prix I don't think would turn heads if it came out today as is. But for the time, it was groundbreaking.
