Top 10 States with the WORST Mosquitoes.
Do you hate mosquitoes? I am sure you said yes. The only people that like those blood suckers are freaks and researchers. The rest of us would be on board with getting rid of every single one on the planet. Side note: There are only two known places on the planet with no mosquitoes: Antarctica and Iceland.
Today we are looking at what places have the biggest problem with mosquitoes. Now I say the problem with mosquitoes instead of most mosquitoes because it is hard to figure out how many there are. Those little airmobile vampires refuse to line up and be counted. So we looked at what places have the most species of mosquitoes and how many Google searches for mosquitoes.

Absolutely shocked Minnesota and Wisconsin are not on here. Only reason I can surmise, is that no one Googles mosquitoes - it's just something you know will be bad, and you deal with it. There are actually some weather reports in WI that include the mosquito forecast. No lie. And fwiw - Wisconsin has 56 varieties of mosquitoes. Edit: I was entertained. 🙂

I don't know if those things in Louisiana are really mosquitoes. More like hummingbirds that drink blood. The last time I was there I could actually hear them flying. They're so big that I got bit through a denim jacket. I didn't even think it was possible for a skeeter to be able to stab through denim, but man was I wrong. I can't even remember where I was the first time it happened but I think it was in Baton Rouge. We stopped to fill up the ol Freightliner and while I was leaning up against the truck drinking a cup of coffee I could hear something that sounded like a little hummingbird flying around and the next thing I knew a skeeter about 2" long had landed on my arm and stabbed through a denim jacket and was munching away. It got a good hard slap and that only stunned it so I stomped it flat with the heel of my boot. That took care of that one but it had a lot of friends. Visiting and dropping loads in Louisiana is bad enough but I don't know how anybody lives there without a lot of spare blood and a transfusion kit.

One important factor you might have included, Mr. Briggs, is the relative humidity. Mosquitos thrive in the humid and swampy areas. I've lived my life, mostly, in Alabama and Louisiana, with briefer intervals in Virginia and Chicago; and I can tell you, where the sweat is dripping off your nose, the skeeter is your constant companion.

In general the most that I’ve experienced being in 46 states. Definitely would be Minnesota being that there are over 15,000 lakes. Even though it’s known as the “ Land of 10,000 Lakes” which isn’t actually the truth. Lakes everywhere and when we lived in the suburbs we had to spray for Mosquitoes 🦟 and ticks ( lots of Deer in that state) every 2 weeks. They would start coming back after only 1 week. If the company didn’t do the center of our yard and only the perimeter of the yard they would come back even earlier. They tried to charge us more for that . 😂

I'm from Wisconsin, and I really don't like to give Minnesota much credit for anything. While I have traveled many times to South Dakota, Michigan and Florida, I can't say I ever bothered to buy bug spray while visiting. However, if I get within 30 miles of the Minnesota border between April 1-Oct. 31 I take a bath in Off once every two hours if outside. The western and northern Wisconsin mosquitoes are as numerous as Minnesota's however in Minnesota, those things are 8 times larger. It's probably from sucking all that Viking/Scandinavian blood over the past centuries.

@@discocorco couldn’t agree with you more. I lived in Minnesota for 20 plus years and thought it was normal to have to bath yourself in “OFF” right before going outside in the garage before I started yard work. Now it’s all a bad distant memory that we moved to Central Florida. They are simply very little compared to how bad they were in Minnesota. This was the twin cities suburbs. They were worse up north or down south. Here they they just seem to come out after dark but about 90 % less in numbers. What I don’t miss is having to check out Dog for ticks every time we let him out in the yard. Here in Orlando we never have to. No deers = No ticks. Every Deer 🦌 contains over 1 million ticks on average. Mosquitos were never that bad in Wisconsin when I visited. Up north they were probably worse.

Given they have more standing water than about anywhere, the only reason Minnesota doesn’t rank higher is probably because the cold weather sets in earlier. After I lost 100 lbs, I stopped getting mosquito bites. They liked me when I was overweight probably because of a different body odor I had when I ate junk. They are attracted to you if you eat sugar, pork, fast food, deep fried, chips, regular sodas.

In Minnesota they have 2 seasons: shovel and swat. And the species are Large! I never believed the stories about babies being carried off until I saw a skeeter bend over to bite a turkey. Now I live in Springfield,MO. A little better for skeeters but we have more ticks and chiggers.

About New York, well, maybe. I've lived in the Rochester area for 43 years and our mosquito season runs from early May until late September. Outside of that, the frosty nights in October pretty much kill most, if not all the eggs. The mosquito population in western NY truly depends on how much rain we receive in the summer and not so much the bodies of water. If we are in a mild drought during the hotter months (which has been a noticeable trend for the past decade or so), the mosquitoes cannot survive well and leave us alone for the most part. The northern part of NY does get more mosquitoes mainly due to the thicker forests and lakes. I would think that a state like Maine would have more than New York. Maine is heavily wooded, a very large part of the state is not inhabited, and Maine contains a ton of ponds, lakes, and streams spread evenly throughout the state. Traditionally their summers aren't that dry either.

A lot depends if you are one of those that mosquitos are attracted to your odor and especially if you are allergic to bites.

I was surprised that Maine didn't make the list. We have a horrendous black fly and mosquito problem up here. In fact the first time I heard that "mosquito is the state bird" joke was when I first moved here. But it's still the best place to live IMHO. And I know about SC insect life too; I have family there and have visited in summer. I thought the humidity was worse than the bugs. You could almost wring out the air! Thank you for another great video.

I vacation lot in ME from Rangeley to Millinocket and it's the only place where I have to wear a head net to go for a simple walk. The swarms or clouds of them in Millinocket are a site to be seen. They even drive the mosquito eating birds into hiding.

I was also surprised. I live in NC now and have very few in my area here but I lived in York County for 35 years and open areas were fine but as soon as you entered the woods you were inundated with them. That’s not to also mention the horse flies, deer flies, black flies, and ticks. I’d still be there but I got too old and unhealthy to cope with the winters.

I agree, Maine's problem with mosquitoes is pretty bad in the summer. I used to go there most summers when my grandparents lived there in the 80s and 90s, and the heavily wooded pine tree forests, tons of lakes, ponds, and rivers, and slightly humid air made a perfect breeding ground for their species.

Come to Maine between May & August, that’s all I have to say. I’ve been stationed in or spent time in most of the southern states and it’s no comparison. The only way it’s worse down there is they’re around longer. Plus, we also have black flies and deer flies, which I never saw down there.

I’ve been in every state east of the Mississippi, and most of the inland western states. That said, I can guarantee both Maine and MN are much worse than most of the states mentioned. MN has the most lakes and the largest amount of peat bogs in the US (save Alaska), we have way more mosquitos than TX or SD

The southern states were no brainers, but I wasn't at all surprised to see New York and Michigan on the list. I fished that part of the country and Canada a lot when I was young, and the mosquitos (and black flies) are enormous. I swear the swarms are also bigger than they are down south.

This is one of the few of your videos where I actually predicted number 1 correctly! I had quite an experience with Louisiana mosquitoes maybe 10 years ago. I was driving down to the town of Venice in Plaquemines Parish south of New Orleans. On the way back I noticed a sign for historic Fort Jackson. I stopped at the parking lot. I noticed a sign said it was closed because of Hurricane Katrina damage. But I saw that there was an interesting looking viewpoint for the Mississippi, so I decided to walk over there. As I was getting close I saw a stagnant pool of water, and suddenly I was attacked by about 50 mosquitoes! I had to get in my car to escape, and even then there were still one or two on me. Fortunately they weren't infected with anything. I didn't get sick. But I emailed the park and said they should put up a mosquito warning sign.

Massachusetts has tons of mosquitos near the coast. The Boston Globe once had an article that states that Newbury, Massachusetts was the worst place in the USA for mosquitos. When I was young there would be clouds of the buggers over the puddles at dusk. A ot of people us bug zappers, and they were zapping constantly at night.

I love this video and you did surprise me. I grew up in MA, so we had some, but it wasn't the Amazon Jungle. I lived in CT for a while and it was the same there. Both could get bad around the rivers, don't get me wrong. But when I moved to Tampa Bay, we invented "The Great Mosquito Hunt" because it was so bad. Every night we would prowl my kids room and our apartment for mosquitoes that got in. There were a lot and my OCD demanded they all be executed before bed. There were a couple years they were Amazon Jungle bad! I've been on the East coast in Palm Beach county for a few years now, and it's honestly not been bad. I feel a good hurricane season coming this year, so we'll see what happens when this part of the state gets smacked. So far, I haven't been here for a hurricane yet, we only got part of a weak one.

Minnesota has a short but brutal skeeter season. We are still wearing mittons in May and they can't bite through that usually. Driving to South Dakota for some skeeterless camping is an old tradition. I don't know why I would google skeeter, but I did buy both a bug suit and a zapper already in MN.

I worked in the woods in SE Alaska for a couple of summers many years ago. It wasn't just the mosquitoes, it was other biting flies as well. The black flies, horse flies, and no-see-ums were all just as bad as the mosquitoes. We had to use the maximum strength Off repellent every 30 minutes or we got eaten alive.
