I live in Tyler Texas, in Northeast Texas; and honestly I could deal with most bugs including spiders. I’ll still Be careful around black widows and scorpions though; even still I could deal with scorpions more. The freakin roaches are the bastards I can’t stand; crawling in dirty water or trash, bunch of disease ridden pests. I’d literally rather deal with mosquitoes. Cause I’m originally from Chicago, and we had mosquitoes and it was easier to deal with still, even here in East Texas; but the roaches especially from April to early September, nasty bastards; and unfortunately if the temperature gets past 100 degrees or it’s past 70% humidity and warmer than 95 degrees, they’ll FLY. 😳 yeah Roaches are the ultimate NO for me, over any other insect, even fire ants don’t bug me as much.

Texas has lots of insects in the wetter regions, ie the gulf coast and eastern big thicket area but west Texas has very few insects because of the dryness and colder weather, the panhandle is part of the Great Plains and gets very cold in winter and the arid far western area is too dry, so no termites or fleas, very few mosquitoes or roaches and no heart worm issues. Basically you could do a video like this just on Texas.

I have a phobia of roaches. I know they can't harm me directly, but I just hate how they move so fast and how big they can get. It's also the fact that they are attracted to filth and decay. Yeonmi Park, a North Korean defector, once said that when she was living in North Korea, she had to eat insects, and once caught a roach. Her mother refused to let her eat it because they're such filthy bugs and carry dangerous microorganisms.

Plus if a roach infestation is really bad, they can end up in your...orifices...a roach in your ear cna do some serious damage to your ear canal and then it dies in there....I won't describe how horrid that can be. I know this because I stayed in a roach motel once and ended up with one in my ear....temporary hearing loss for a number of months and I got the heck out of there.

A testimony from someone who lives in a tropical country (Brazil). Spiders here are as common as ants. Just today, there was a huge spider in my backyard that unfortunately I had to kill (I have small children). My aunt was bitten on the leg by a spider that was on her bed, I have been stung by a scorpion on the couch, and my son has been stung by a wasp. Not to mention the dozens of mosquitoes that transmit diseases (like Zika and Dengue) and the flies that land and lay eggs on food. Btw, very interesting video, Briggs. You did satisfy my curiosity about "where the bugs live." I learned about bugs-in-the-South when I moved from NJ to NC. Somehow North Carolina missed getting on the list. I could identify at least 80% of the bugs you listed having found them on my property and in my house. Except I think you left off other insects found in NC: carpet beetles, wolf spiders, jumping spiders, jumping beetles, praying mantis, daddy longlegs, sugar ants, wasps, yellow jackets, carpenter bees, carpenter ants, fungus gnats, pine beetles, and caterpillars crawling across the carpet, and Asian Lady Beetles that congregate inside in the winter. I know mice don't count but can't help mentioning them. I keep kitchen-food garbage in the refrigerator until garbage day. Some of my favorite bug-fighting tools are the soles of my shoes, fly swatters, vacuum cleaners, paper towels, anything-you-can-grab, spray cleaner, boric acid and borax, glue traps, Chandrika - Sandal Soap, Orange Guard, Aunt Fannies All-Purpose Pest Remedy, and AMDRO for the fire ants.

Very interesting, unique video! The larger amount of insects in the southern states are the #1 reason why I'm thankful I don't live in a southern state. I've got my own breif story to share by the way. I remember this like yesterday, but back in the year 2000 when I was 11, me and my family were in an Arkansas hotel. That was the worst hotel experience of my life. Thousands of moth in the night swarmed the parking lot due to the street lights being on, and the inside of our hotel room was full of insects. Thankfully I didn't feel one crawling on me while I was in bed. As a result, 23 years later, I haven't been back to Arkansas ever since.

I've had a spider so large on my shoulder that I could feel the weight of each of its footsteps through my shirt. I've hit a flying insect so large with my car mirror, that I had to turn around and go home and shower and change clothes& wash all the yellow bug guts off the whole left side of my car. The VAST majority of insects are completely harmless and non-pestiferous, yet they still get a bad rap. Some of the bugs you missed for Florida, are noseeums which feel like tiny shark bites, and Florida Palmetto bug. Palmetto bugs (1.5 - 3 inches) while not being dangerous are terrifying. Turn on a light in the middle of the night and they will fly right at you. They are downright hard to kill, too. Ask any Native Floridian and that one is the #1 bug they mention. We also have Sea Lice, while not a true bug, acts like one and can make a trip to the beach miserable.

Hey Briggs! Surprised Minnesota and South Dakota were not on this list…in eastern South Dakota the mosquitoes are so bad, the towns hire teens to do nightly spraying and spray the entire town with mosquito killer. Once it got so bad, they hired an industrial crop duster to drop mosquito killer on the town (which failed completely because of the wind which was not factored in). In the summer, I could not leave my house without getting bit at least once. They also have cicadas, cicada killer wasps, ticks, prairie bugs, boxelder bugs, termites, ants, and black widow and recluse spiders, which all cause problems. Grasshoppers also affect crops from time to time. I haven’t lived in Minnesota but I’ve heard they have all of these and are worse. Thank goodness I’ve since moved from the plains.

Mr. Briggs - your imagination and inventiveness know no bounds when it comes to coming up with new videos! You've really outdone yourself with this one here! Of course, I was right in that most of the states with serious insect infestations were the southern states - it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out! California and Missouri were the only states on this list, it seems that were not southern states. Did I tell you that, as I was hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains near Altadena, California late one afternoon, I saw a real live Tarantula go down into its hole? Just thought I would share that with you.

One thing about the arid atmosphere in parts of southern California is the lack of mosquitoes. Moved to the San Fernando Valley from the east coast where the mosquitos eat you alive. Went years without one bite till I visited a lake up north and wondered how I ever used to put up with it.

I moved from Michigan to Georgia. In Michigan the bug season is short because it’s a cold miserable state. But in the summer the bugs are far worse than Georgia or California. And in the northern portions of Michigan the black flies are the worst thing I’ve ever dealt with. They are fast, relentless and they bite hard.

Yah. I've lived in several of these states for at least several months, plus Georgia which is mentioned in passing. I've never encountered even a fraction of the bug problems I had growing up in Maine and New Hampshire. And I have been told that "no state in the Lower 48 holds a candle to Alaska for bugs." My guess is that half the hard data on bugs is really _agricultural production data,_ with the other half being epidemiological. Meaning, northern agricultural states like Michigan will be ranked below southern agricultural states, while small states with less agriculture like Maine and New Hampshire get off scot-free because nobody keeps statistics on how many black flies the average Mainiac swallows in a season.

I works, and I had 2 bowls of this on my kitchen counter by the sink and collected thousands of them in those bowls. Also, disposing of all food waste in plastic bags, Publix shopping bags work well, keeps them from invading you kitchen.

You could cover all your bases by talking about arthropod problems. That would cover insects, spiders, scorpions and centipedes in one neat package. I also want to point out that North American kissing bugs don't carry chagas--that's South American. Kissing bugs are still horrible, since they're cockroach-sized bloodsuckers who drain enough to leave a bruise. They get their colorful name by their habit of walking on your ceiling at night till they smell your breath, and then dropping down on your face, often as not to bite you on the lip. Since they spit anaesthetic, you don't feel it enough to wake up until it's too late. I always thought "The Kissing Bugs" would make a great name for a punk band.
