I'm not much of a movie buff and I have a (admittedly morbid) fascination with serial killers. So I've seen documentaries and shows about Aileen Wurnos before I ever found out that Monster was based on her. I was aware of the movie and the acclaim Theron got for it, but knew nothing about it beyond that. Given that, I was just flabbergasted by Charlize's performance once I finally did see it. Not *once* did she look or sound like Charlize Theron to me. And she looked, sounded, and acted so much like Aileen Wurnos that it was almost frightening. Incredible. I still have no idea how she nor her make-up team did it.
@TheRisky9

I'm still not even sure it was Charlize Theron. I think they channeled the real Aileen Wurnos or something...
@aubreyb7613

This was a role that easily could have strayed into caricature with the weight gain and the make-up, but Theron embodied Eileen so flawlessly and so sensitively that it remains one of the most incredible performances put to film. You get the impression that Theron understood Eileen on such a spiritual level, it translated to such a gritty but sympathetic performance.

Ledger’s death was an incalculable loss to cinema. I’m the son of a cattle rancher and was born and raised in a rural community exactly like that depicted in Brokeback Mountain. Watching Ledger’s performance in that film sent chills down my back. I’d known first-hand many people, my father and male relatives among them, exactly like Ennis. He nailed it in a way I’d never before seen in a movie. And I’m 66 years old, so I’ve been watching films a LONG time.

When Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker, I remember thinking "okay, that's weird", because I only knew him as Patrick Verona from *10 Things I Hate About You* and had never seen him in a dramatic role. But boy did he knock it out of the park. I'm still blown away that he died so suddenly and so young. :(

Ledger's portrayal definitely keyed in on the dark side of the Joker.

***** Amen to that one. Jack Reacher, characterised as very tall, blonde and war worn. Whoever thought Tom Cruise - being short, dark and remnants of a pretty boy face - was a good fit needs firing. The Jack Reacher series had the potential to be a MASSIVE franchise due to the quality and amount of source material. They stick Cruise in it and it bombs. Lee Child is a fantastic author.

spiderleenie The studio got the big name Marlon Brando...for an exorbitant paycheck. I think Reeve was PERFECT as Superman! But I do think he got the part for his physical appearance, which was a perfect fit IMO. Not denegrating his acting in the least...he was spot on for the role IMO! Reeve was the perfect choice. Any "big name" at the time in the role just wouldn't have worked as well to me. Big names cause us all to reflect on said big names' past roles and public persona. Superman needed to be a fresh face but with the physicality that matched the character. Reeve delivered wonderfully.

Charlize Theron totally fitted the part of Aileen Wuornos in Monster. She's a very great actress! I don't know of what other actress who could have done better for that movie role. Michael Keaton also did good in Batman. Keanu Reeves was pretty good in Speed. Heath Ledger was also great as the Joker as well as many other movies such as Brokeback Mountain. I wish Heath Ledger was still alive.

I`ve opted to direct a biopic of the Small Faces and chose pretty much a few English/British actors but I chose a NON English actor for the part of lead singer,Steve Mariott: Ashton Kutcher. I had Kutcher in mind because although he`s more of a comedy actor with such high spirit while Steve was a low-struck infamous musician with a drug habit that started him off prior to his career,I immediantly COMPARED Kutcher to Marriott in my mind while watching a musical of one of their hit songs. The think is that this list is about actor whom a ton of people didn't believe they would pull off a known (or established) character. For Sin City, the graphic novel and movie weren't that well known at the time. But still, people found it weird to cast Elijah Wood as that f***ed up character, and the mofo pulled it off! Creeped the f*** out of me in the theater! And about Leo Dicaprio in Django Unchained, it wasn't a known character at all. Original stuff from QT's screwed up brain. And honestly, I'm not sure about what most people think, but I've always thought that QT can make actors play anything we cant expect from them. Like Leo, Travolta in Pulp Fiction, and I want Tom Hanks in a QT movie in a never seen type of role! Cheers from France guys! 🍻

When I go back to watch the first Nolan Batman movie, it is excruciating to watch the likes of Sir Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy, and Christian Bale having to act with the likes of Katie Holmes, who if it weren't for the fact that she was married to Tom Cruise, would just be that chick from Dawson's Creek. Also, in Batman Begins, her co-stars have to carry her because she's no where close to the level of talent of the others in the cast.

John Jarratt in Wolf Creek: he used to be on Better Homes & Gardens and is the knockabout Aussie larrakin you could have a beer with. He used that larrikin image and then dialled up the horror as Mick Taylor. The scariest thing about Mick was he could turn from your best mate to your worst enemy so quickly, and he had that evil Freddy Krueger-like laugh. The role turned Jarrett into a horror icon and a regular on the comic book/pop culture festival circuit.

Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind- an English theatre actress playing an iconic American Southern Belle? I thought she'd be near the top of the list

Something to be said for the make up artist on Monster too. In the case of Star Trek, it was more that lots of people were against the very idea of recasting TOS. Most of those people remain unconvinced.

@pixstix I think it was the hand to hand combat skills and his use of an impressive number of weapons that everyone didn't expect. Frankly it didn't surprise me. I actually told him once he'd win an oscar.leicester square , I was a teenager.

I love how fans went from not believing Heath could properly portray J to now how nearly everyone is convinced no one will ever do as well as he did

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. I was shocked by the casting then further shocked by how well it worked. Love Craig as Bond. FYI, in the books Bond is described as not very attractive.

Why are Rosamund Pike and Rooney Mara 'honorable mentions' and not on the actual list? They both were beyond perfect.
