Particularly what I disliked was that his voice was simply wrong for what Les Miz is. It is silly that it is French people singing in British accents, but it has a more “classical” musical theatre still to the singing. Resonant tones. Crowe was not even close to that style which made him stick out like a sore thumb.

Javert is bold, resolute, cocky, a bit angry, self-righteous and confident. Crowe played him way too tame and quiet.

When you think about it, in Batman Begins his voice only goes full throat cancer in very brief doses like, "I'M BATMAN!", where it suits. In scenes where he has more dialogue (like with Gordon or Rachel), it's more a voiced whisper, which isn't so hard to listen to. When we get to The Dark Knight, he has more moments ("This city just showed you..." "You don't want to kill the boy...") where he has more gargled dialogue, and it starts to appear sillier and harder to listen to.

I have to question that whole singing live business. There must have been a lot of work afterwards on those vocals, at least with Anne Hathaway. With the way she was sobbing in that one scene, I would think she wouldn't be able to speak clearly, let alone hit those notes.

Criticisms often evolve because of ageism and sexism. Majority of the time though we forget how a character is written. Ive seen people loathe someone in a movie based solely on their character- that means they're a good actor if you hate what their character is portraying is so much. I mean kristen dunst's lines are not exactly kernels of gold. She's just a co-ed in love with a dude who got bit by a spider. That example they showed, what was she supposed to do... break into tears every 5 seconds? Her character was cheesy, she was emotional in the right scenes when it counted. Alot of the good performances had feathered out characters and the director wanted them to look good or badass. If they didn't respect the person, it showed in the film. Sofia was a one-dimensional character with all due respect to Coppola. I don't see how she would have given some riveting performance as a naive girlfriend. January Jones is literally eye-candy, she was never meant to be fleshed out as a character of depth- Of course we notice the bromance because most directors are male and give the men alot more screen time and depth. Keanu has always come across flat emotionally- thats why Matrix is praised. Cameron diaz is very different in that role for me, she also acted in 'The Gift' which is also ignored as good work she did. Christensen has had really good performances and the reason why he was cast is because he was terrifying in auditions; they said something about his intensity was freakish and they went out of their way to cast unknowns. Estella warren is just the dumb gf... and Mickey Roonie is just subject to the times, if we look at his character- he played it regardless of the racism. People are easily swayed is all I know.. they packrat over the underdog easily.

Yeah I think people give Natalie Portman a break because she has proven to be a good actress in other roles whereas Christensen doesn't have a reputation for being a good actor outside of the franchise. That being said though she was certainly just as terrible to him throughout the trilogy. I find Portman an inconsistent actress anyway as I thought she was noticeably terrible in the Thor films too.

Natalie Portman is indeed a very good and very accomplished actress. That said, very few people came out of the Prequels looking at all good. Ewan McGregor and Ian McDiarmid come out far ahead of anyone else that was in any of those three movies, let alone all three. Portman doesn't come out of those movies very well at all IMHO. And, TBF, I don't really blame her. The dialogue is just so bad. Even in the third movie, where the dialogue was so much better she comes off as a stereotypically overly-fretting and way too high-strung wife. I said it before and I'll say it again: The dialogue is the true villain here. Everyone who is judged as putting in a less-than-stellar performance deserves to have the "but the dialogue was REALLY BAD!" note added.

pretty much; yeah, others have had musical training but she was the only one from a purely musical theatre style background; experience wise and was her first movie. There were a few other bona fide musical theatre actors/singers in there too. Most notable being Colm Wilkinson as the Bishop. But there were also cameos from Hadley Fraser and Gina Beck and Fra Fre. None of whom had as big a role of Samantha of course. Though I have to say Hadley did an amazing job with his few lines; he played the guard.

He was great as Anakin..not so much as Vader. Like his ‘noooo’ scene at the end was cringey (though I blame the dialogue here as well not just the acting). Overall though for me I think Hayden was great at capturing the whineyness and angst of Anakin Skywalker. He did well to balance his character’s immaturity and impulsiveness against the more calm manner of the older characters around him like ObiWan, Yoda, Ma$e Windu, Palpatine, etc. And that helped his character stand out in contrast to those around him as the memorable lead character who we can see why they later become evil. The films would’ve been a lot worse if Hayden tried to be serious and brooding and downplayed the immaturity of Anakin, especially seeing as Star Wars were kids movies too. I think Anakin (deliberately or coincidentally) brought the right amount of immaturity that the role needed

It's a little harsh to hate on Hayden Christensen he was at a very young age but so are Daisy Ridley and John Boyega in the same franchise right now and they fucking delivered. If you look at the other entries in Christensen's filmography you see he's simply not a good actor. A pretty face but a mediocre actor at best and that just isn't enough to compete in the movie business. His line delivery is overall just terrible.

Russell Crowe is a very fine actor. But he really is a terrible singer - can't even stay in key. You'd have to have a tin ear to think otherwise.

...yeah he was. His acting wasn't terrible, but Javert should scare the audience, intimidate them, make them feel bad for him, make them react in some way. I really got nothing from him. And if you think that his vocals were even remotely passable, look up Terrence Mann's version of Javert's song "Stars." (Or Phillip Quast's version. Or Norm Lewis's. You have many options). Then try to listen to Crowe again. It's just baffling that anyone could listen to Crowe, knowing the material, and sign off on the decision to cast him.

Actually apart from the dead eyes K-Stew is actually attractive I think but she can't act for toffee and the film itself isn't that well done. Mirror Mirror which was an outright parody was much more enjoyable.

I'll give you that one. But as far as her performance goes, it works for this particular incarnation of Snow White. She's broken and saddened from being locked in the dungeon for so long, it makes sense for her part to be given to Kristen Stewart.

I owned a video shop when LA Confidential came out and was invited to a pre-release screening to which I took my sister-in-law. At the time I knew very little about the plot and had never even heard of Russell Crowe. When we came out of the cinema we were discussing how much we'd enjoyed it and I commented on how much I'd liked him. It turned out my sister-in-law was a huge fan of Romper Stomper so loved seeing him in this. I do agree that Kim Basinger was the weakest of the cast though. The scene where they are watching a movie and she's swinging her ponytail just made me feel she was 'mutton dressed as lamb,' I think she was about 43 at the time.

Damn she won the Oscar? Not that she was bad but everyone else in that movie was so much better

He was young then, as he got older he became very good at choosing roles that are within his abilities. Pretty much from the Matrix on he has only done stuff that he is capable of.
