I worked in a Calif prison for almost 30 years & now retired. Most ( not all ) of the inmates I spoke with said that yappi dogs that are kept inside at night are a strong deterrent. If outside regardless of size can be dealt with. Inside they can’t be reached/touched and therefore usually wake the home owner.

A big dog is one of the oldest, most tried and true home security systems. Locks on doors and windows. And a weapon of your choice.
@drjonesey5
@drjonesey5 2 жыл бұрын
I've heard directly from Police and Burgulars who were caught that this is a myth and I believe them over random hearsay any day because they deal in this stuff all the time or use to do it themselves and we have video evidence to back it. A "big dog" is not a deterrent for a thief. An animal is only a deterrent if it is loud or if it is trained in guard duty. Thieves have robbed plenty houses with dogs just by bringing treats for the dogs because they have already scoped out the place and have dealt with dogs prior to the burglary at that house. Thieves have stated a small noisy dog has given them more more problems than a big dog any day. This is simply because most people have dogs as simple family pets, not as guard dogs. They do not have the time or even want to dedicate the time to making a dog have guard dog habits. They simply think oh, I'll get a Rottweiler, he looks scary and he's big that's enough; wrong. There's a video of a Great Dane doing nothing to a bad guy who gets into a home while the owner is there and making noise for the guy to leave and the guy wasn't scared of the dog at all, he was deterred by the commotion and noise; the dog just sniffed him. The dog should trained enough to tear anybody apart that isn't on your ok list that tries to gain access to any part of the house. That takes effort to do. Cops do it, Military does it, security, junk yard and auto part places and so on. If you climb over a Junk yard fence at night or something your rear end is getting bit but the junk yard staff and guess can be around the dogs just fine. That's how I want my dogs when I get them.

Install double cylinder deadbolts on all your exterior doors including your garage door. If an intruder gains access inside your home through a window they won't be able to unlock a door without a key to leave and will be forced to leave the same way they entered. It also prevents them from breaking a window and reaching around to unlock a single cylinder deadbolt. Replace the small screws used in your lock strike plates with 4" screws that will be able to screw into the studs around your door jamb. It will make it harder for someone to kick in your door.

@AI, its nearly impossible to make a home 100% burglar proof but one can harden it with diff levels of security and barriers to make it much more unappealing and difficult for someone to want to break in and move on to an easier target . Having a good solid fence (preferably iron bars) with a strong lock & chain, plenty motion detector lighting, a dog or two, reinforced front & back doors with security strike plate, 3M security film on windows & a firearm, plenty situational awareness.

We have over 3 acres and there are a lot of trees. I was getting beat up by the lower branches, and it was taking forever to cut the lawn. I slowly cut and chipped the lower branches up about 8’. It made it so much easier to cut the lawn, and the lawn looked great. Then we got rid of the ugly huge massive shrubs by the house, put up stone walls and planted flowers, and small shrubs. Then I replaced the outside lights with flood lights. What started out just trying to make it easier to cut the lawn turned into a great security improvement, and it looks great. I can see the whole property and house at night easily now. You know you hear something strange outside at night, and go to check it out.

Landscaping is a huge thing to consider. Like you mentioned avoid large rocks and decorations that can be used to smash a window, keep bushes and hedges trimmed so they can't conceal someone in them, consider if you want to have thorned plants to deter folks from using a window to access the home, and posting a "beware of dog" sign can be useful.

I've always felt my home was pretty secure. There are no windows on the ground floor so someone would need a ladder to access a window into my home. My neighbor 's house has the same design. Turns out thieves stacked up his patio furniture to create a makeshift ladder to access a patio door on the second floor. The moral of the story is don't provide criminals with tools to break into your home.

In southern Nevada where I live, gun ownership is common, non-essential businesses are closed currently and most households are in self-quarantine. And crime is down 30% locally. I am guessing that the local criminals are reluctant to break into a home that is likely to be occupied by multiple unemployed adults.

It’s not just that in parking lots they can put money and attach it to string and then the money stays in between the hood and windshield so when you get in your car and put the keys in start the car up. Then they pull the money with the string and you get out of your car then go to grab the money and then the burglar steal your car

I struggle with this every time it comes up because I would venture a guess that ~most~ criminals that are doing smash and grabs in homes are not the ones that are driving around with a wifi scanner trying to find vulnerable networks and easy to manipulate IoT devices. Of course that is a risk but so is everything but I'm comfortable with it. We [should] all have redundancies.

Anytime I'm working outside (mowing etc) I keep the doors to the house locked and a key in my pocket. Family knows to lock door back if they come out and don't answer knocks on the door without making sure it's me (which I'll likely not do since I have the key). Yes I'm around outside but I can be on side or in back of house. Anybody could just walk right in if we didn't operate this way.

Security professional and security company owner here. I have some common critique points and tips. Still really good video! Any of the tips are good. I'm from Europe, trust me compared to European standards. Common locks in America sck ass. Get a Dutch lock with 3 stars. Make sure that you have a lock with an anti pulling system. In this way they can't pull out any locks. Also don't post photos of your keys online! They can be easily copied! For anyone interested in this look up cpted (crime prevention through environmental design) Also a really important point with the online systems is that the privacy policy usually is really really bad. Most of them lack encryption and alot of backdoors. This is as bad as it sounds. A lot of hackers are able to see what you do. Even the company can! The best friend of a burglar is your lazyness. You can have all the security systems in the world. But if you don't use them, they are useless... I could make a video on it if you like. Greetings Robin

I'd prefer wired setup instead. More cumbersome to install but won't have to deal with battery replacement. There's also some things to consider like cable length, voltage drop etc. While most insurance companies won't consider it a valid system, you can use a raspberry pi to make a diy home security system for the learning experience.

This would be extreme for most people. But I live alone and with this virus and only a matter of time the banks are going go bankrupt. So I got prepared with boarding up my my windows with 3/4 inch plywood with peak holes. I still have other things to do. I always park my truck in the garage. I have a home defense 12 gage loaded shot gun near my door along with 9 M sig, 9 clip pistol. I figure people are going to get hungry and they are going to break in for anything you own. I hope it dosen't get that extreme, but I'm ready. I'll take the plywood down when I'm sure the coast is clear. I started preparing long before the CONIV19.

On a serious note, good vid w/ lots of everyday, practical tips....with some costing you only labor (inserting longer screws into strike plate/hinges, cutting back plants/trees/shrubs blocking windows) to more expensive (simplisafe, hi-tech synchronized lighting, panic rooms, pop up .50 MB blasters with motion sensors and remote firing through an app..real life Call of Duty!!). Never rely on security systems. Not only does it require power and an internet connection. But they can also be hacked. Locks. Bars on the windows. And door barricades will always work. Anyone who gets past that isn't breaking in for you tv. They're breaking in for you. So keeping a weapon is also a good idea.

Actually, Sootch did a video on the Byrna: a CO2 powered .68 caliber pistol that shoots like a paintball gun. It's main projectile is a round pellet that comes in three varieties: solid rubber for impact stopping power, pepper spray containing round, and a white powder round for training purposes. Each reloadable magazine holds 5 shots and the C02 cartridge can be stored internally indefinitely before piercing. Better than a pellet gun!

I disagree about the necessity of making safes concealed, only because I think there are two ways to go: one, conceal the safe, or two, have a safe that is so massive and unweildy that criminals who thought they had an entire day wouldn't bother trying. I've got a gun safe, It's as tall as I am, weighs on the order of 500 lbs, is bolted into the concrete foundation, and has a foot thick door with 2 inch thick hardened steel lugs. Thats not to mention a top rated lock that is very pick resistant (I haven't been able to open it, and I am fairly skilled with lock picking. might need to invite the lockpicking lawyer over to see how good it really is though XD). basically, safe's like my parents safe that I could probably pick up and walk off with, probably a good idea to hide it. A safe that it took multiple people hours to get in using specialized equipment? it's probably okay if people can see that one in my opinion

Hey, I have a request (for ideas from you or from any commenter) that may not apply to much of the audience right now I suppose, but a lot more of us all the time are living in cars of various sizes, and I figure it's a good guess that more people will be moving into vehicles in coming months. Security is a bit different for that case. I've been in smaller cars before and finally am in a truck that I've been modifying, and I spend a lot of time in the city (working on that though), and I know my town well enough to be pretty comfortable (plus I have two decent sized dogs, one of whom likes to bark loudly lol) but I'd love any ideas you or anyone else might suggest. I plan to rig up a little camera in here somehow and I have a few varied weapons but there's always room to improve.

Location is critical and overlooked. Park within 1mile of any Law Enforcement Organization of your town, or near the edge of a large hospital parking lot since Crooks want to avoid those areas. It should be easy to do since you're familiar with the town. Park in a way so that you have an easy drive/route out and you're not boxed in. It could be something as basic as Backing into a Parking Space. Park in well lighted areas, busy enough areas and within lazy distance of more expensive vehicles, they are more lucrative targets. Plan and scout alternate locations you can go to. Lastly, slowly shift to a Reverse Cycle Sleep Schedule if conditions worsen.
