As a life long reader, probably read before I was fully potty trained, I enjoyed this. At first I thought the 30 sec rule to limiting, but warmed to it. Anything by Nigel Calder is a must. Charlie Wind, Don Casey too. The Dashews write excellent cruising books. Chart#1 is a must have. Bowditch. Hal Roth, Patrick O'brian and Jack London for fiction... and don't go to sea without Brian Toss... But one thing I would say is that all of those should be in Kindle format, although I don't believe in standalone kindles anymore as you can read it on your phone, your pad, or your computer. But as you say, somethings need hardcover. Jamie, Liz is a lot like my wife I think... competitive to the bone. Don't try to beat her at her game.... loosing proposition mate.

+Bob Fomenko [Liz] Jamie hit me with the 30 sec idea just before we started filming, which was good since I hadn’t thought about what I was going to say and the time limit concentrated my mind!

Hi Liz and Jamie, great vlog. Wish I’d have seen this four years ago when I was buying my boat and looking for good material to learn from and prepare for cruising on the boat. It would have saved me a lot of money buying the right books first. I have about 70% of your recommended list now and agree 100% with your suggestions with one exception, the Sail & Rig Tuning book by Ivan Dedekam. Although a good learners book for sail trimming and terms with loads of illustrations, I find the details on rig tuning insufficient for modern sailboat technology, all types of rigs and enough detail to make changes to the rig or tune it efficiently. I was also annoyed by the illustration of tuning the shroud with a screwdriver jammed into the turnbuckle, which made me loose confidence with others details. I haven’t yet found one that is better, but personally would have difficulty recommending this over what’s already included in say Nigel’s Cruising Handbook or Chapman’s (although both big and bulky). If I can suggest a couple myself, I would add Calders How to Read a Nautical Chart. With electronic charts being the norm these days I find it amazing how many sailors in my area (coastal) just have no idea what the charts are showing them or how the chartplotter is displaying or, and more importantly, not displaying it. This guide is a reference guide and good for review every once in a while, but packed with useful information on extracting the details from your charts, whether paper, in guide books or electronic. And, for the sailor that doesn’t take themselves too seriously or simply needs to laugh at themselves once in a while I’d recommend Ed Robinson’s, Poop, Booze and Bikinis. It’s a quick read of very real stories and situations that every yachie has experienced and put in a way that makes you laugh out loud at yourself on every page turn. I leave this in the head or take it out with a coffee or beer after I’ve finish a miserable job on the boat to remind myself why I love boating so much or when I need a chuckle. Warning, it isn’t child appropriate and non boaters (sail or power) may find the material off putting or a turn off. Thanks again...love your guys.

I am going to pick up the maintenance manual immediately. Read Melville in high school and got bored. Read it again as an adult and enjoyed it very much. When everything is going wrong and one is wondering why in the world they are in a boat far from home, pull out a Tristan Jones book, particularly The Incredible Voyage, and get all of your motivation back and then some! He could be a slobbering drunk, and many don't believe he did the things he said he did. But I learned more about sailing from this one legged old sea dog in eight hours over two days back in the early 70's than I've learned in dozens of books and many courses. I found him to be eloquent, long winded, and a master fish story teller in person. I never read his books until many years later. He crafts his adventures so they read like a fiction novel. So are they fact or fiction? You be the judge. Whoops, I've gone over my 30 seconds.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 6 жыл бұрын
+Charles Thomas [Liz] Jamie’s read The Incredible Voyage, and we had a copy on board for years but I never read it. Jamie loved it, by the way. I got put off when I heard that a lot of it was fabricated, but I will try to find another copy (Kindle?) because everyone says it’s brilliant whether or not it’s true. Peace and fair winds!

Thanks for your books reccommendations Liz & Jamie! Loving your vlogs, they have improved massively over time in both quality, editing & presentation. My question is, how does your kit stand up to the rigours of a marine environment, especially your editing kit/computer/laptop?
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 6 жыл бұрын
+Mark Crane [Liz] Thanks for commenting and the kind words. The marine environment and humidity is nasty, so you just try to keep all electrical and electronic kit in a safe, dry place. But I'm sure nothing lasts as long on a boat as it does on land. Peace and fair winds!

The mic port on our old camera suffered so I had to clean it with a q-tip and WD40. That's just one thing that we were aware of. No doubt the environment doesn't help but we do try to store them carefully with silica bags when we can.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. Having been a freelance cameraman for some 25 years now, I often shoot in hostile environments but have mostly had the luxury of protective kit for the cameras etc. Thinking of geting a craft capable of blue water cruising myself & keeping the kit dry & functional will be a challenge! My pleasure. They cost me nothing, so why not share...? Cool factoid: Many of the audiobooks are produced by Blackstone Audio. BFD, right? Well......Blackstone Audio is located in the small town of Ashland, Oregon which is home to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Being seasonal, there isn't much work available during the off season for these wonderful actors and actresses. So, off season, they create wonderful audiobooks. Not dry, boring reading...but, audiobooks where you can close your eyes and see each character and locale in your mind's eye. You've got my e-mail. Let me know if there is any specific titles you would enjoy.

+Salty Buster [Liz] We LOVE Tom, he's so knowledgeable, and we have one of his books. Couldn't fit all the books in the list...but we'll do another one at some point. Peace and fair winds!

Correction, we have three of his books and one of them is autographed by him to Liz! If we do 'Another 12 Essential Sailing Books', he'll be in it for sure.

Just to add to your recommendations.😳 Anything by Tom Cunliffe! He writes as he speaks in a most entertaining way and is the sort of bloke you would wish to be storm bound in a pub with, full of amusing tales of derring do. He will even personalise the books for you if you order through his website - www.tomcunliffe.com. For someone starting out his ‘The Complete Day Skipper’ is, bang on. He also has a You Tube channel too and while not an accomplished videographer, as compared to FTB his videos are eminently watchable. A real character.

[Liz] Couldn't agree more, Tom Cunliffe is a GURU! We have one of his books on board...just not looked at it in a while. We're talking about doing a second list in the future and I'll remember to put Tom in!

I discovered something out of left field - "Glenans Sailing Manual" The French are renowned offshore sailors, and they have a highly structured system to ensure sailors are suitably qualified for their planned activities, and this book provides a thorough insight into detail provided by the Glenans school... I mean, do you know of any other reference work which includes a topic such as "maintaining morale in a liferaft"?
