We are Catholic and have had NO issues with TGTB language arts curriculum. I'm a former reading intervention specialist/ language arts public school teacher and find the curriculum to be amazing. I highly recommend it to everyone. It takes us about 25-30 minutes per day per level not including the personal reading. We do levels 1 and 3. It does not take an hour.

@@mujtabaalam5907 Probably because she is doing it with two different kids at different levels. It is overtly Christian, but I know there are social media groups for Jews using TGTB or other religions using TGTB.

New Subscriber! SOOO Helpful! Thank you! I've been using The Good and the Beautiful LA with three kids (we're finishing levels K, 1, & 3), and while I feel it's amazingly thorough, I just can't swing the parent involvement, since we also use RightStart Math with all three, and I have a crazy 3-year old, AND I'm working a few hours/day from home! I love how you pointed out curriculums that would work for parents needing a more independent style. This has helped me see that Language Lessons for a Living Education is what I need to try for the coming school year--just ordered levels 2, 3, and 4 today! Thanks again!

Thank you for giving me brief, simple explanations that are also clear and concise! When I began studying curriculum, I was so confused and didn't know where to start, but I'm on my way thanks to so many seasoned, loving homeschool moms God has given to me along the way! These side-by-side comparisons are so helpful. After watching your reviews, I'm now seeing why Abeka is so popular; it seems very intuitive and engaging. I came to watch this to find out more information in all the language of arts to choose one but actually this video is very general: I have been using Abeka so let me help: -You need the parent kit so you can teach your child many charts of special sounds that will be asked in the weekly test. - It is spiral so you will see some concept next week again. - the writing book is all in cursive so you need to help your child read it so he/she can copy it, if he/she is new to cursive. -then you do the 20 minutes reading with the readers and you need to get the book for the question/ answers you need to ask and what they should answer. - you work in a weekly spelling 17 to 20 words a week. - they memorize a poem for 3 to 4 weeks. - after 90 days in school, it is when creative writing is introduce to the children; so they do that besides the cursive and weekly test. The parent needs to sit down and teach the first page of the language book and the child does the second page as homework. - it is so very expensive because every reader is $17 dollars and you need around 9 of them. Also you need to buy separately the child kit and parent kit for Math, History and science. I investigate in The Good and The Beautiful and it covers lenguaje, spelling rules, writing, art, geography and history also 1 reader for $56 dollars. You can supplement writing and science as you please…. You also find the same curriculum for free in pdf for those who can not afford it. I personally checked the scope and sequence of Abeka and TGTB and it is exactly the same the children will learn in a year but for less money. I spent last year in Abeka $980 dollars. And I believe a kid doesn’t get to be the best because the curriculum is expensive, the child gets to be amazing according to the way he learns and the environment. Take it for a person that speaks 4 languages and all self taught. I hope this helps anyone out there with the same question.

This was so worth waiting for. Thanks Rebekah. We are using LLFLE this year because of its short, gentle approach, AND because there is not going to be any sentence diagramming in later levels. I have tried most of these curriculums. My son was a straight-A student while in school. He mostly did Abeka. Once we did homeschool I found out that Charlotte Mason was to easy for him. Our favorite has been The Good and the Beautiful. They have so much good material. However, we still needed harder material so we are back to Abeka. I just wish that their books weren't so cheaply made. They tear easily. Love your videos.

As someone who went through IEW and went to college at 16, placed into college level English and got an A with not too much stress or effort in my first English class I can say it works. All my siblings and I did great in college, however, I HATED it. It was super annoying doing all the openers and clauses and the KWO got annoying too, but it works. I learned to write super well and looking at specifically writing curriculums for an 11 year old I am now tutoring I will reluctantly admit that IEW seems to be one of the best curriculums when it comes to writing.

Everyone recommends AAR for struggling readers and kids with dyslexia, but it didn't work for my son. I found LOC and Love love love it. I'm learning things about the English language that I wish I learned as a child. My son is thriving with the LOC program and my 2.5 yo is starting to sound out words because of this approach. I am so thankful for this review and the math comparison they have helped this kinda first time homeschooler a lot. I would like to bring up and correct one thing as a member of the LDS church. I can completely understand where you are coming from on deciding that TGTB is not a right fit for your family being LDS I would not use say a curriculum written from a Catholic perspective so I totally understand and respect that. However in this video you did say that TGTB was written by someone is LDS so its religious but they aren't Christians and I just feel as someone with so much influence you should be saying the correct statement. The Church of Jesuse Christ of Latter Day Saints is a Christian church. Yes we have doctrinal beliefs that differ from those who are say born again Christians but we are still Christians we believe in Jesus Christ. So I think as you are reviewing and comparing it is important to keep in mind that comments like that can be hurtful to LDS members. Christianity is kind of like a tree and then you have your branches you have Catholics, Lutherans, Baptists, Born Again, LDS, Jehovah Witnesses. All these religions believe that Jesus Christ is our savior. Do we all have different doctrinal beliefs of course but we are all Christians because we all believe Jesus is our Savior. So I would just hope that as you are asking for your followers to respect that you are choosing not to use TGTB for a multitude of reasons but one being that it is written by an LDS author that you would be respectful of LDS members who may come across your content and educate yourself enough on the LDS religion to respect the fact that we are Christians and maybe avoid those common misconceptions about iur religion that can be hurtful to LDS members. Thank you so much for the informational videos and I hope you can read my comment with an open mind I am in no way attacking just trying to educate that their are common misconceptions about the LDS religion that when said can be hurtful and offensive.

I so appreciate your comment! I feel that is so strange that in Rebecca's videos about curriculums, often she makes comments abouts the TG&TB as not a being a good fit because it's written by an member of The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints' author. As you have mentioned, Christianity has such a wide range of different beliefs, but what brings us together is the love we have for Christ, and His Atonement Sacrifice for us. Now, being a member of the LDS Church, I have no problem using a CM curriculum, even though she didn't go to the same church that I go, but again, the love we have for the Word of God, and for Jesus Christ is what we have in common. The TG&TB is a great curriculum, it is beautiful, it has great Christian values, and that is what it's important. Regardless of religion, I don't think that any curriculum should be used alone to indoctrinate our children. They are to teach academics, and to serve as a reminder of the Christian values we learn inside of our home, and give us the opportunity to discuss them with our children. I do have some of TG&TB material, however it wasn't exactly a good fit for more older child, so I moved on to try others Christian curriculum. I know that it might sound bias, but I have to say though that TG&TB has nothing but beauty, and great loving Christlike values. It can not be said, it isn't a Christian curriculum, just because the author doesn't go to the same church you go. I see that as prejudicism, and this is not a Christlike attitude.

Thank you to those who have voiced the fact that TGTB IS Christian based! The Church of Jesus Christ religion IS a religion about Christ - the same Christ as taught in the Bible. We believe and teach from his teachings from that very resource. Not saying anyone should be pushed to use this curriculum but at least give the credit of a great curriculum with an amazing and wonderful tone of full Christian values and material. Sad.

I’m not LDS but I am a Christian who learned not to judge to certain denominations or groups as not “True Christians” because we don’t share the same doctrinal views, it’s not up to us to decide that anyway. God will be the final judge in all matters. If someone tells me they follow Christ then I treat them as a fellow brother or sister in Christ. Now regarding TGTB a lot of people discover Jenny Phillips is LDS and immediately throw the baby out with the bath water. There is nothing in TGTB that pushes any agenda other than the Bible. And thats one of the many things I love about it.

We must follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and not of another man. The Holy Bible is the infallible Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16; Isaiah 40:8; Matthew 4:4; Matthew 24:35; Revelation 22:18-19), and Jesus IS the Word that became flesh (John 1:14). Yes, Jesus loves everyone and He did not come into this world to condemn the world nor to judge the world (John 3:17; John 12:47). Jesus was sent to the world to save us. But in order to be saved, we must look to Him and believe in Him! Believe that He is the Son of God, that He is the Christ. And we must be born again (John 3:3). The seal of our salvation is the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). I say all this just to say that I do not know what you believe in your heart. Only God can judge that. But I do know that when you abide in Christ, your life will produce good fruit. I know that you will pass through trials and through tribulations and through injustices, because if they did it to Christ they will do it to us that believe. However, I once heard a very powerful preaching that said: There are two types of Christians: Those who are truly saved, And those who truly believe that they are. I highly suggest that you ask the LORD to reveal Himself to you. Ask Him to point out anything in your heart that offends Him. Pray that He would deliver you from any unbelief, from all deception. In Jesus’s name. We can not be confident of our salvation because of any works or sacraments. That is a big deception and lie of the enemy. We cannot be confident of our salvation just because we feed the poor and are kind to others. No. The Bible is clear. For three years now, the LORD has had me praying about the deception in the church to be exposed. That we all may be united in the name of Jesus Christ alone. That we would forgo anything that is not pleasing to Him. I have been praying for a reverent fear of the LORD to return to the church. For those who call themselves Christian to not lean on their own understanding or wisdom, but to fully deny themselves and to trust completely in the LORD. Many love and blessings to you all!

thank you for making this video!! my 4th grader is struggling with IEW structure & style. WE got to week 12 and he's literally crying over doing HW and spacing out. He lost interest and is sick of summarizing stories week after week. He loves to draw and write and I am looking for a new program and this has been so helpful! I printed tons of samples from the company websites and we will be trying out different samples. I think my son really needs variety than doing the same thing every week.

Would the Brave Writer program and the All About Reading program work well together? I'm not quite understanding if Brave Write is a full language arts program or only the writing portion.

Hi Rebecca, we are using the Sonlight program but starting in grade 3 we want to use the IEW SSS program including Fix It grammar. If we do that would we then eliminate the Sonlight Language Arts portion? Thank-you kindly.

I am so glad I found this video. What I thought I wanted is actually pretty off base when I found what else is out there! I have an incoming 1st grader (who did go to public school last year) and a kindergarten kiddo who is coming out of public school pre-k. My 1st grader is a boy who loves reading but is very reluctant when it comes to writing things out. He struggles in that area a bit. My daughter loves a good workbook! Am I crazy for considering different curriculums for them? The ones I am drawn to are Language Lessons for a Living Education and Sonlight. I also love the idea of using Grammar Galaxy as a supplement. I also loved All About Reading, but I worry it doesn't cover everything. Any opinions or thoughts would be very much appreciated.
