Sandbox RPGs are still something of a niche subgenre, but more and more players are becoming dedicated fans. Better still, developers are finding new ways to create epic, free-form adventures where you can explore and influence the world. As a result, we’re seeing a renaissance for Sandbox RPGs.
Presented here is a curated list of my top Sandbox RPG recommendations. These games not only guarantee extensive gameplay but also embody the previously discussed characteristics. It’s important to highlight that while some of these titles remain in Early Access, their current depth and quality deliver an experience akin to that of a fully-fledged game.

I think Genz has Open World and Sandbox confused. I don't blame you because you have Todd Howard and Social Media telling you Fallout 76 is a Sandbox. I'm an Ex-Designer of Fallen Earth. Wartales is a Open World turn based tactical RPG like Battle Brothers. Sandbox RPG's are very rarely ever made because they're hard to design and appeal to a very niche audiance. They're games like Star Wars Galaxies PRE CU, EvE Online, Valheim or Kenshi. Open worlds are these games where players can roam freely. Sandbox's are much more complex that allow players to make their own choices, actions, quests with unresticted gameplay while also providng them the tools to make their own content. The Creation Kit could be considered a Sandbox.

Thanks for your help and suggestions. Probably Wartales is at the border of Open World/Sandbox. But i don't think that this games aren't sandbox. Some of them have light mechanics and some have heavier ones. Anyway thanks for your help :)

I don't think you needed to give a tag gen z, many people don't understand the difference between the 2 genres and its pretty confusing at times for people of all ages not just gen z.

Fantastic overview, thanks! I still have soooo many games to play. I played quite some Wartales and hundreds of hours of Battle Brothers. I consider Battle Brothers to be one of the best games I have ever played. Have been playing it for many years.

Wildermyth and Battle Brothers are amazing. I have only played the Vagrus demo and have not played the others, but they all look quite interesting.

I can vouch for battle brothers, star traders and Urtuk as great games. I also own a copy of Raiders Forsaken Earth last time I checked is abandonware that never got finished and lacks any support, stay clear from that junk. Colony Ship and Underail are also worth checking out.

Since you've mentioned Startraders: Frontiers, the game Starsector deserves a place on this list as well (or even more so than Startraders). EDIT: it's NOT turn-based though!

Looks like i can normally open it. But lately there is a problem with the cache system.

@@TurnBasedLovers No for example if i try to open "all quiet in trenches" news, i've a test human/robot (or checking connection site) and after that i return on the main site. Another example, back to down review, it's go to the review but the images are missing and few others things. It was about 10 days ago.

@@TurnBasedLovers yeah but like you mentioned, it is by far the most polished, aesthetically pleasing and addicting experience. I've done two full playthrough and am waiting for their DLC for my third playthrough. I've been playing Baldur's Gate 3 non-stop and am in act 3 but my steam profile says I've played Wartales about 120 hrs more than BG3 so far. I'd say the game has given me entertainment worth its price 😁👍

@@tn74h50 yes I'm pretty sure you can. It released on the switch and I saw on recent patch note about the controller. I have not done it myself yet so I could still be wrong

please, next time bother us with games that ARE actually released and not Early Access Hells, trapped in fear and toxic communities. Oh and games with AT LEAST "Very positive" reviews on Steam in order to be "Best RPG" games, as your title suggests. Sadly, I'm sure that if you follow those two guidelines i mention, there will only be 2-3 games to fill 15 mins video of yours....

@@TurnBasedLovers BB is the first sandbox/mercenary sim (whatever these are called) rpg I've played. I love turn based games such as old xcom, new xcom 1,2, xenonauts, age of wonders 2, SM, 3, 4. But for me BB is too random, progress is too slow, a mistake or bad RNG sets you back too much. So yes, it's an ok game but not that good. at least for me.
