Jurassic Park is still one of the best movies for special effects. The dinosaurs were amazing and exactly how I’d say everyone imagined them to be. And the actors all did a great job. The lesson that they tried to teach John Hammond about trying to control animals that they really knew nothing about, and the struggle with his need to have this dinosaur park was done so perfectly. The quote from Ian Malcolm that always sticks in my mind is “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should”

That scene with the chest burster also left the actors speechless because they had no idea that it would happen. Their expression when it happened was genuine on how they freaked out when it happened.

One moment I would say that would leave fans speechless would be Doc Brown's DeLorean Time Machine going through time for the first time in the movie Back To The Future. The special effects of the time machine traveling through time is incredible and left fans not only excited that Doc's time machine in the movie worked but also left our jaws hitting the floor when it disappeared! Whoa!

What about the “No… I am your father” by Darth Vader? I honestly thought it would be top three, it probably left more people speechless than many of the ones on this list (good list, just wanted to point that out 😬). Even the actors were speechless at the theaters when the film was released (they didn’t know). And another one from Empire could be the asteroid field scene. Or the scene when Yoda takes the X-Wing out of the swamp using the Force. Or when they take out one AT-AT by going for its legs. Or when Han says “I know” and then goes down while Chewie keeps screaming. Or the cave scene. Or Luke’s failure at taking the X-Wing out of the swamp. Or the ending scene when Luke and Leia watch through the ship’s windows how Lando and Chewie go away to rescue Han. Man, I love ESB, and imo it should be on this list, probably top 3 or even top 1. Tbh, there aren’t many speechless moments in cinema history that can match Vader’s revelation. Literally no one was expecting that, not even a couple of seconds before the quote. To me it’s like the mother of all “Wtf? I really didn’t see that coming” cinema moments.

From the stories from everyone who saw it in theaters for the first time, the opening shot of the star destroyer chase in Star Wars should have been at the top of the list but I guess these are more of movie scenes that blew their minds back in the day sort of thing?

For me the most shocking scene in The Silence of the Lambs is Hannibal's prison rampage (and subsequent escape). I had been led to believe up to that point that Hannibal maybe wasn't such a bad guy anymore, since he was 1. Helping Clarice track down Buffalo Bill and 2. He seemed so calm and well-behaved, as if his days of cannibalism were long past. Boy could we not have been more wrong. Moral of the story: the enemy of your enemy isn't always really your friend. The Silence of the Lambs is essentially a battle of evil vs. evil, just one of the evils is helping the hero... but is absolutely NOT a good guy.

Private Pyle must be one of the most saddest and most tragic fictional characters ever. He didn't need nor deserve that kind of punishment and that instructor (the one who choked him, shouted him, slapped him, bullied him and forced all the other privates to hit him with soaps on a towel while he was sleeping) had what's coming to him for all the terrible things he has done to him. But even that didn't stop Pyle from himself and it made him commit suicide by shooting himself with his own rifle while his one and only good friend Private Joker was still watching. Truly a sad, tragic and heartbreaking end. R.I.P Private Pyle.

Honestly, great list. I personally think you guys did a fantastic job on the picks. A few necessary honorable mentions though: -The beheading in “Hereditary”. It legitimately had me pause the movie and take a day-long break before I watched the rest the next day. Like between killing off an assumed main character and Toni Collette’s performance in reaction, that was just an insanely impactful moment. -The phone booth on “Amelie”. Like, cmon. Try not to cry while covering your mouth while that flashback sequence plays in Bretodeau’s head. -The execution in “Life is Beautiful”. Easily one of the most heartbreaking demises for one of the most admirable and selfless film heroes ever. -The car scene in “Children of Men”. Just takes you off guard in the most intense way. One of the most iconic long-takes in cinema history too. -The reveal of the third man in “The Third Man”. This one is funny for me, because I definitely wasn’t “silent” when I first saw it. I laughed soooo hard when the light switched on to reveal his face and yelled “NO-FUCKIN-WAAAAY!”. But everyone else in the room I was in at the time were definitely silent with their mouths agape lol. -Shooting the photo of Hitler in “Come and See”. Just easily one of the most emotionally effective moments in cinema history. One that truly conveys the emotional turmoil of the age-old question “Would you kill baby-hitler?” -And finally: the final shot of “The Blair Witch Project”. I mean, again, come on. A film completely based on the unknown, ended with a horrifyingly ambiguous open-ended conclusion. Mike uncomfortably staring at the wall. Heather screaming and crying like a banshee… and then nothing… BRUTAL, man. There’s so many more that could be listed, but I appreciate you guys for taking of the impossible task ❤️

You missed two great ones (But nonetheless a very good list): 1. Regan levitating in "The Exorcist" 2. The ending to "The Sixth Sense"

This list is awesome, but I was expecting to see 6th Sense here, or The Impossible, when that gigantic wave destry everything, that was a moment that left me totally speechless

The Snap should not be on this. If you were paying attention in Infinity war while Dr. Strange was running through scenarios on how to stop Thanos, he only came up with one way that wouldn't destroy the world. So at that point everything that happened was supposed to. Including the snap.

Hahaha very true, I love bagels. As far as war movies go, Full Metal Jacket is by far my favorite. Kevin Spacey always seems to play rather creepy guys, he was great as Bobby Darren, he actually played a very normal guy Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, he played a rather creepy guy, a murderer actually. The Green Mile almost made me cry, and maybe a handful of movies have ever done that. we have a large pond right next to our house, and sometimes at night we have like a ghostly mist that slowly covers it, it's eerily creepy but beautiful at the same time, we live in the middle of a forest, and we can see the mist slowly coming from the forest to the pond. I loved Alan Rickman; I was sad when I heard he had actually died in real life. I have all the Jurassic Park movies, their so good. The only thing I liked about The Wizard of Oz were the flying monkeys.

Now that scene in the Thomas the Tank Engine episode Sir Topham Hatt's Holiday makes sense. Sir Topham Hatt being nearly run over by a Tiger Moth before boarding Harold the Helicopter was likely inspired by or drew inspiration from that scene in North by Northwest. Private Pyle was an example of a person who appears to not be meant for war being turned into a killing machine, and fellow soldier nicknamed Joker bore the guilt of what happened to him throughout the second half, even killing a Vietnamese girl as an act of freeing her from the ongoing conflict because he saw Pyle through her.

No Oldboy reveal? Now that's a shocker. Shout out to Kubrick for having 2 films. I thought 2001 was not going to be here and there really is no way to take that final sequence in except in silence. And a couple more could have made it on. He really had a way to shock in terms of where he took the narrative, the psychological implications, and the artform all at the same time.

You guys are missing the scene in Million Dollar Baby when Maggie falls on the stool. You could have dropped a pen in the theater I was in.

One of the most annoying things I’ve ever read was a review of Million Dollar Baby. I had been curious about the movie and saw it reviewed. In the first sentence, it said she becomes quadriplegic and is given a mercy death. Screw that guy.
