Here are the Top 3 Unbelievable Nigeria Football Comebacks - Miracle in Football
1. Nigeria Football Miracle of Dammam
It’s the quarterfinal game of the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship hosted by Saudi Arabia.
Nigeria under 20 team faced the Soviet Union Under 20 team for a chance to advance to the semi-finals. Nigerians had high hopes for the game. In this quarterfinal game, the Soviet Union raced to a four-goal lead within 46 minutes. Everyone couldn’t believe it. The match was all over at this point. No team at a FIFA World Cup match had ever comeback from four goals down to equalize let alone, go on to win. At this point, many fans lost hope. They felt it would be Soviet Union advancing to the semi-finals. However, the Nigerian players had other plans in mind. With only thirty minutes left in the match, Nigeria responded. Christopher Ohenhen scored two goals, in the 61st and 75th minutes of the game.
Samuel Elijah then scored the third goal in the 83rd minute before the captain, Nduka Ugbade completed the remarkable comeback with a goal in the 84th minute to end the game in a draw. Nigeria then won the match 5-3 on penalties to knock out Soviet Union who at this point couldn’t believe what just happened. Nigeria went on to defeat the United States 2 goals to one in the semi finals but lost to Portugal in the final. Even though the team came second in the competition. Their exploits in the quarter finals would not be forgotten and it was given it’s own name called “The Miracle of Dammam”
2. Nigeria Comeback AT 2014 CHAN against Morocco (The Cape Town Miracle)
Many people might have forgotten this, but it was just as incredible as others.
Nigeria had just won the African Cup of Nations in 2013, and the home-based players were looking to replicate that feet at the 2014 African Nations Championship (also known as CHAN), however they found themselves down 3-0 at half-time against Morocco in the quarter finals.
The team coached by late Stephen Keshi did not lose hope though, It seems that whatever the coach told them during the break appeared to have worked as midfielder Ugonna Uzochukwu began the comeback for Nigerian with a strike four minutes into the second half. Rabiu Ali then smashed home the second goal for Nigeria from the edge of the box in the 56th minute, the talented winger, Ejike Uzoenyi, then completed the extraordinary comeback for Nigeria in the 90th minute, when his shot from outside the box beat the Moroccan keeper to send the game to extra time.
Substitute Aliyu Ibrahim then sealed the historic win with a goal in the 11th minute of extra time. Nigeria has just come from 3 goals down to defeat Morocco 4 goals to 3 and the fans couldn’t believe it. The players did a really good job pulling such a comeback on that day. Nigeria however lost the semi-finals game to Ghana on penalties.
But Nigeria still claimed the bronze medal after defeating Zimbabwe in the third-place match. Ejike Uzoenyi was voted as the best player in that tournament.
3. Nigeria Comebacks AT Atlanta 96 Olympics
Nigeria defeated Brazil in the semi-finals at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic games in what many people will describe as a miracle and their favourite comeback of all time in Nigerian Football History.
Nigeria managed to achieve what would become a legendary comeback against an all-star Brazilian team (which included Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Bebeto and Rivaldo).
Brazil was leading 3-1 with 12 minutes to the end of the match if felt like the game was over. At the 78th minute, Nigeria pulled one back with a goal from Viktor Ikpeba. The Nigerian team then equalised in the very last minute thanks to a goal from legendary striker Nwankwo Kanu to send the match into extra time. Kanu would also score the winning golden goal four minutes into extra time to send Nigeria to the finals.
Nigeria would do the same thing yet again at the finals against Argentina, coming from 2-1 down with less than 16 minutes to the end of the match. First Daniel Amokachi equalised in the 74th minute to bring the scores level. And then the key moment came: In the very last minute, Nigeria won a free-kick and Argentina tried to play the offside trap. But they failed, leaving Emmanuel Amunike alone in the box who scored to give Nigeria the victory against Argentina. And for the first time ever, an African team had won the Olympic football tournament.

Yes these were great moments for Naija, the USSR under 20 is definitely my first choice. Atlanta 96 was a miracle!!! i remember watching the USSR game in the Student Union lounge, when we were 4 goals down 15mins into the second half i left the venue to go sleep, before i got to my hostel i heard a faint shout of heyyyyy!! USSR don score again? No was the answer, we scored, i thought 4:1 with less than 30 mins is an herculean task, when i reached my room, i heard another shout of HEYYYYYY, i asked we scored again? Yes was the answer!!! i ran back to the SU lounge to watch the rest. It was one of the happiest days on campus... to come from 4 goals down and win....

That was when Nigeria has players, connection or network wasn't used to choose or select players back then, it's talent that they choose or select players with, players also are disciplined during that time, they're not after money like those football players of today, they want to show their talent unlike nowadays

Super Falcons almost had miracles of their own on 2 occasions I can recall. First in USA 1999 against Brazil in our only quarterfinal, coming back from 3 goals down to force extra time. However, Sissi's golden goal broke our hearts. And of course about a week ago against Morocco with only 9 players for most of the match that forced a penalty shootout. Naija no dey carry last, walahi....lol! 😂💪🏾🇳🇬👍🏾🤣

@@germanehabib7345 absolutely! They have to work on finishing. That's the difference between our players and the South African players. The South African players have worked on their runs and finishing, very clinical. Our players have the ability to control the ball and get the opponents to play our style but very deficient in finishing. That was very obvious in all the games the played. I hope the Super Falcons will bounce back soon, and work on those deficiencies. Our coach also needs to learn how to read the match and make early substitutions where necessary. I have observed that this year's tournament was majorly about tactical decisions and I must give it to the South African, Moroccan and Zambian coaches. The played us tactically well. Congratulations to them!

The miracle of Dammam is my favourite all time Nigeria's football miracles as narrated to me by my late father. He was at the university then schooling; he and some of his football loving friends were watching the match in their hostel room all looking discouraged not until the equaliser came then one of their friends went to the hostel balcony carrying a stone and throwing it downstairs in celebration. My father said in Joy that the USSR had thought they won so they substituted their good players giving the opportunity for Nigeria to equalize and win the quarter finals.

@Victor, this is a fantastic video (well done). I believe this are the main reason, why the continent of Africa needs to say a big thank you to Nigeria for their fantastic representation of Africa, at the global football Fifa organised platform. It is hard to pick a favourite. I was very very young during the miracle of Damman - I remember vividly that day - the feelings in our household could not be described. It was electric, a miracle - it was unbelievable. (I remember -Christopher Ohenhen, Jimoh Balogun, Taiwo Enegwea, Samuel Elijah, Mutiu Adepoju, Cristopher Nwosu, Tunde Charity, Philip Osundo, Micheal Oyemachara, Oladunni Oyekale, Peter Ogaba, Olademeji Lawal & Anthony Emoedofu). Great players. And what can you say about Atlanta 96. It is a suicide mission for a team from Africa to face Brazil at the semi final stage and then face Argentina in the finals. But when you have players such as (JJ Okocha, Sunday Oliseh, Daniel Omokachi, Victor Ikpeba, Taribo West, Emmanuel Amunike, Celestine Babayaro, Tijani Babangida, Wilson Oruma, Jonathan Akpborie, Uche Okechukwu, Mobi Oparaku & Nwankwo Kanu). Anything is possible. Fantastic players. Truly the Dream Team.

@@profdatao9403 Jonathan Akpoborie was part of the team to Atlanta 96, he was a fantastic player at that time however, I am not sure if he had enough playing time in the games because he struggled to get on the first team. Good presentation! USSR vs Nigeria has Dimeji Lawal Jersey Number 10 score the 1st goal not Christopher Ohenhen! Nigeria played the match with 11 men & had no substitute to use due to 2 red cards and gross accumulation of card after a 1:0 loss to Portugal in match before playing USSR! I watch the match 1999 via Phillip Ogbaligho of Minaj TV! Another comeback I like is July 1 1999 quarter final( USA ) when Prisca Emeafu, Nkiru Okosieme and Nkechi Egbe level it 3:3 2nd half( Brazil led 3:0 in 1st half)! Sissi free kick 5 minutes in 30 minutes extra time knocked the Falcons out!

@@AdemolaVictorTv Though I am yet to view it it doesn’t change that Dimeji Lawal scored the first goal via free kick! He got a yellow card in the second half before scoring with his left foot and there wasn’t congratulations as him by teammates! This very goal has been documented wrongly! I came across someone in Lagos that like soccer and he asked me two remarkable things as to the game! Telling him of Dimeji goal and 11 players play all 120 minutes! He told me that I was on point! It’s not the first time things have been documented wrongly!

I will tell you when Nigeria will get better or for that matter return to the levels they once were. It is when they stop using tribal sentiments to determine who gets in the national side and who doesn’t. Secondly, it is when they will stop asking for bribe money to get someone who is not so good on the team list while keeping those who are good out.
