First, we can rule out all “war” movies that aren’t the REVOLUTIONARY war… they were fought for other reasons and I’m not into “generic” patriotism. “The Patriot” has survived the usual anti-American chest-pounding of people who live here but have no love of country (heck, most HATE it but refuse to move to some other country they think is better… probably because they’d hate it there too! 🤨) “The Patriot” really captured how most Americans BECAME AMERICANS - reluctant at first - until it became personal and suddenly - even British born individuals heard the preamble of our Declaration of Independence and realized WE were a NEW countries with High Ideal unique in History and a document that remains unique to this day - a declaration of individual rights acknowledged by no other country (as they all remain “subjects” of a parliamentary system that has no constraint of the powers of “government” So that leaves “1776” Yes, it’s a musical (and some can’t tolerate singing and dancing) but at its core is the forging of a paper by imperfect men (self acknowledged) upholding the Ideal of Montesquieu and Locke and the reason to fight against a government that has ceased to be anything other than Totalitarian and Oppressive… just as the MONSTROSITY that has morphed out of the Federal government and ignores the Declaration of Unalienable Rights and the Bill that was appended to a constitution in the vain hope these Rights would be protected. The Drama of “1776” proclaims the Ideals and the Reals those men (MEN) struggled wit’ and came around found a New Nation… and forces us to ask… “What are OUR ideals today 🤔 Why have we lost our way 🧐 and where do we go from here?” Why do we fight wars and are willing to die for our beliefs. The Revolutionary war was fought by men who had a vague notion that they needed to be - freed - of the British Empire and took up arms against the most powerful military of that day and - persisted - and won… But, unlike today, it was the STATESMEN that signed their own Death Warrant to set forth WHY we were gong to fight that war! Where is that today 🤨 Sadly, because of our politicized “school” (indoctrination) system few AMERICANS even now the History, let alone honor it. And it may well be our downfall that we don’t know how this country was founded… but guzzle beer and set off firecrackers and ignore those who seek to destroy it - and they are all here - and have no respect for America. “1776”
