Thanks for the informative video. I’ve been buying seed from John for the last 3 years. Great guy to deal with and the seed he sells is quality. I was tired of seed not germinating and since I started buy from him I haven’t had a failure. I was actually in my plots today wishing it was spring to start some work on them.

Please consider working with Jason from the Wisconsin Whitetail KZfaq channel. He has been producing great foodplot test plot content for 6 years and might be able to offer you growing conditions (soil and pressure) you may not have at your disposal. Both relatively small channels with valuable content. 🏆👍🌱

I’ve been using Northwoods whitetail seed for he last 4 years. I’ve been impressed with everything that I have ordered. The oats are an awesome draw even in Ag land. I planted them 2 years ago and thought it was too early because they put on a seed head, but I watched the deer reach down to the ground, pull off an entire stalk and eat the whole thing!! For as long as you sell seed, I’m a customer!!

Can’t understand that…. Very unfortunate that people are asked to pay that. We do our best to get high quality seeds (no, not bin run seed like some are suggesting we are) at the lowest prices. But that price over $100 is very unnecessary.

No-til comment from Kansas. It works adequately when conditions are good and moisture is available, with more rain on the way. BUT.....there is so little room for changes in conditions, (heat swing, dry spell, birds, etc). It's definitely a tool, not an all out solution.

Great tips John. I was going to incorporate a kill plot into a shooting lane. The lane is 25’ wide. Now I’m rethinking that because of leave coverage in the fall. Is it worth putting some cereal rye in?

Hey John, I sure appreciate all of the great information. I have a switchgrass question for you: I have an established switchgrass screen but I wanted to fill in some bare spots and also widen it some. I already broacasted/ frost seeded more switchgrass seed (Cave n Rock) into those areas. I removed most of the thatch last fall where new seed has been applied. Would it be ok to spray simazine on it before green up this spring? Will that hurt the established switchgrass if it makes contact?
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663

You should be ok to spay as long as you keep the rate no more than 1.5 qts per acre

Hey John, great video. I saw in a previous video that you do minimal tillage. I have been doing all no til (spraying/broadcasting). I have had great success with my good soil however I am trying to reduce my chemical usage and plan on buying a tiller for my tractor. What do you feel is an adequate tillage depth? I only plant cereal rye, crimson clover and brassicas. Also, how do you terminate your cereal rye? Thank you.

So I have a big question. I have a 5 acre food plot of clover. In the spring we use a "conventional" planter+sprayer combination to plant CORN and SOYBEANS. (so we keep the clover between the rows, but completely burndown/kill the clover where the corn and soybeans are planted) ***For the small amount of weeds that do germinate in the spring, what pre-emergent and post emergent herbicide would you advise(that wont affect the corn and soybean germination)?*** Thank you for your continued services. Top notch and always professional!!!
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 2 ай бұрын
Hmmm That’s a good one They are both a grass and a broad leaf if you plant together.

@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 We've always had good luck spraying Butyrac 200 and Clethodim 7-10 days before planting the corn and soybeans. ***Unfortunately, we learned that corn and soybeans MUST be planted no earlier than 7 days after spraying these two herbicides. For anyone else's benefit*** We haven't found a herbicide to spray after planting, of course (and I do not think such herbicide exists -as you said grass and broadleaf)

John - do you recommend planting annual clover or peas in the spring to fix nitrogen and then sweet feast brassica or rye grain in the fall? PH is OK and soil sample doesn’t say I am low on N. Just curious if that’s a recommended practice. SW Michigan. Thanks!!
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663
@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 3 ай бұрын
Sure If you don’t have something like a red clover growing from the fall before, a spring planting of oats, peas and an annual clover like berseem or crimson works great for a plow down.

Would you rather add an annual clover to the fall mix (I rotate portions of the plot with rye and brassica) or would you rather put it down (maybe with peas) in the spring to improve soil health? If so, which NW clover product would you recommend?

I just bought some Tecumseh switch from you! I'm am planting a few 6ft wide areas only about about 60 ft long. Would there be any reason I shouldn't apply peat moss over top to seed to help with germination? I'm worried about another dry summer in NW Mi in my very sandy soil.
