While "Goodfellas" and "The Godfather" are some American classics, there are some great foreign gangster movies too. These are some of my favorites.

Great list! Admittedly, I’ve only seen three of them (A Prophet, City of God, and Gomorrah), but I definitely wanna give the others a look, especially the one that you likened to a Coen Brothers’ flick. Have you gotten around to watching The Drop yet? It’s American but it’s up there with those lower level crime flicks like Good Time or Friends of Eddie Coyle. Would’ve been right at home as a piece of 70s cinema, but alas, the always brilliant Tom Hardy would’ve been an infant.

Brandos Ghost I still haven’t watched it, the cast looks great though. I can’t miss a James Gandolfini movie.

I'm so happy that someone mentions Gomorra. This movie is (IMO) straight up one of THE BEST gangster movies ever made and it just really annoys me how almost NOBODY I know has ever watched or even heard of this movie. It's just like you said, this movie is the real deal and not that romanticized hollywood crap. I grew up in Spain in a very similar shithole and when I watched that movie it brought back some really bad memories of my childhood and teen years. The portrayal of the criminal underbelly is nothing less than 100% accurate in this movie. But sadly people just like illusions more than reality, because the reality is ugly, ruthless and many times straight up barbaric. And worst of all, you can easly run into it at any moment.

Thank you for sharing that, and I totally agree. One of the reasons Gomorra is so good is that they actually shot at the infamous Le Vele complex in Naples. While I'm a little conflicted about the ethics of that, it definitely added to the realism. And like you said, there's something to be said for the fact that the movie doesn't sugar coat the real effects of organized crime. It's like the opposite of Goodfellas.

@@AnthonyValli Well regarding the "ethics" of filming in that location, that was 100% intentional. This movie was not made because some people wanted to make a gangster movie, it was made to raise awareness because literally NOBODY here gives a shit about those ghettos. Most people (middle class/upper middle calss) straight out DENY that ghettos exist in most European countries, meanwhile human trafficking get worst and worst over here. The ignorance here is just insane. People that live there suffer and people that don't straight out ignore their existence. And that's a good thing (for the mafia) because that means the can just do whatever the fuck they want and nobody cares. Even the author of the book Roberto Saviano, had to FLEE from Italy because of death threats and believe me those death threats are no joke. And shit like this is all over Europe not only in Italy. People over here just watch too much Hollywood movies and therefor believe that gangsters are somehow an "American only" thing or some shit.

@@rall172 That's a good point. It would be different if the production was some sort of cynical cash grab, but it was done in the interest of an honest depiction and to being awareness to the modern state of things in these communities.
