In today’s video I want to address the situation that most of us are in right now: confinement. We’ve been and will be in the coming weeks locked at home. Meaning that if you don’t use online gaming solutions your only wargaming opponents are your loved ones.
In this situation you need to come up with a strong doctrine to trick your loved ones into playing Wargames, or at least historical board games.
This video will attempt to help you with that by providing a list of games looking enough like regular boardgames for non wargamers to be interested, and having a strong enough wargaming feel for grognards to scratch that special itch.

A bit late to the show but great video. I recently moved towards war games after watching your video with Rodney Smith. With Cuba Libre in my collection, Fire in the Lake on its way and my eyes opened to a massive library of opportunities, I can't thank you enough. It's funny too as I already had Undaunted and Air, Land & Sea on my shelf, so must have been unwittingly gravitating towards the world of war games.

Vive l'Empereur ! Team Shakos.

What a well thought out and excellently presented talk - thanks for doing this. Lots of great ideas in here! But now I need to mail order a bunch more games from my local games store - so no thanks for that 🤔. My only other suggestion to help entice others into war games, is to ask them what historical period interests them the most - that’s how I got my youngest daughter’s boyfriend into playing, as it turned out he is particularly interested in the Roman Empire (for whatever reason) so now we are part way through a game of Hannibal and Hamilcar on VASSAL. 🙂 Please keep up the great work!!

Great video! I think at 2.5 you could insert Memoir '44. While it looks like a war game, that's the sell.You get some nice toy soldiers and can replay the event's of D-day. But it's it light and just some. Many have heard of it, and since the battles in the rule book usually favor a sight, you can have a challange while still playing your best game. A second tip that worked for me is War of the Ring. While it's a (heavy, depends on your definition) war game, it let's you retell the Lord of the Rings Books, which is a huge draw, and makes some of the fidely rules easier to learn and/or appreciate. And again, nice figures are more inviting than cardboard tokens. ... Sometimes convincing is easier than tricking.
@HomoLudens1871
@HomoLudens1871 4 жыл бұрын
I love Memoir' 44, the best entry point in the series! But as you said, this video is about tricking, not convincing. I also agree that if I had to convince I would definitely go with Memoire, War of the Ring, Sekigahara and other beautiful & accessible wargames.

Like you I am a wargame proselytizer and I tend to agree with much of what you say here. Some years ago I was getting some family into some wargames. My mother was one of them, like you I thought "card game" the game was Atlantic Storm. Now my mother was actually great at playing the cards I mean she caught on quick, like you say she knows cards, but Atlantic Storm has some dice rolling and when it came time for her to make dice rolls she would just throw the dice like she didn't know what to do with them. They would go all over the room and I would have to hunt them and she would just laugh. I remember saying "ok mom you are good with cards but you are not allowed to roll dice anymoe.".

Yes, definitely an interesting game for introducing people to wargames, but only people who are already interested in it. Here, the idea is to get people who are not interested in the genre to play "almost" a wargame without them really realizing it.

@@HomoLudens1871 Ick! Currently let's see what I have on the way... I have 8th Air Force from Fortress Games on the way. I have Kaiserkrieg from Whitedog also as I eventually want to get Global War but figured I would play the first in the series to start. Also have the boxed set from Blue Panther on the way for Tally-Ho! Again Mag-23 is on the list but I decided to start with Tally-Ho! first. And this morning I just ordered Down Fall of the Third Reich the DOIT GAMES version not the GMT one. This one seems simpler and crisp and I am a sucker for WW2! Recent additions have been Ostkrieg and Paific Tide and a week prior to that Iron, Blood, Snow & Mud. What is currently sitting on the shelf is too numerous to list out although a good selection from Whitedog, Worthington, Hollandspiele and some GMT and Compass to name a few. lol

Very cool! I would consider myself a level 3-4 gamer (more experienced in card games such as Magic, but also Living Card Games such as Arkham Horror, so narrativity is a definite plus for me), and I'm quite curious albeit a little overwhelmed by wargames (also, your introduction to war games helped a lot :) I was curious about your opinion on good print and play games considered wargames (so just to test without expending a lot of money) and also, which wargames are best suitable for solo players, given the current situation that is still going on?

I'm annoyed at how difficult it is to get a deck of tarot cards for playing the game in the Anglophone world. I suppose one could just use a divination deck - they did originate from the playing deck after all - but the size makes them more difficult to manipulate. The closest this has to do with wargamming is that there is a bid called "garde."
@HomoLudens1871
@HomoLudens1871 Жыл бұрын
The divination tarot is a different set of cards, you really need a Tarot deck. The cards are larger than regular cards though, but with practice you'll manage. In my region we play Tarot from a young age and kids have no issue playing large cards. But send me a link to a deck of "garde" and I'll tell you if you can play tarot with it.

Great choice with undaunted...I own North Africa and introduced a friend who was totally new to boardgames and he was enthusiastic. I wonder, what do you think about commands and colors? I wanted to introduce my wife (who's a great player but hates to learn new games) to c&c by playing battlelore 2nd edition. I think the mechanics are simple and not so much "chrome", as you said.
@HomoLudens1871
@HomoLudens1871 3 жыл бұрын
Well I would always recommend C&C for anyone who WANTS to play a wargame, but not to trick them, because it's very obviously a wargame. As you point out it's great because it is such a rich series, and everything your learn for one game just makes it easier to get into the next. My current favorite is Medieval, but I played a lot of BattleLore which is awesome, and also really liked M'44 and Ancients.

@@HomoLudens1871 actually I thought about battlelore as introduction to c&c because of the fantasy theme. You're right it is clearly a wargame but I noticed that for non-gamers the setting is maybe the most important motivator to play. A fantasy setting actually works as a disguise for wargames, whereas a historical setting would immediately give that "wargame feeling" with related prejudices

My background is wargaming. Its my favorite subject. I like many other types as well, but I tell you, most gamers I have met shy away from war games without even trying them. All they have to do is here the word history or war game, or even just see the box art first and they instantly assume its not for them. So, I have to play those solo, and I am no longer into cardboard chit and hex games like I used too. There are some excellent light historically based games out there that I know non war gamers would enjoy..if they would just give them a chance! So I love this video because its a good approach. I was definitely hardcore before now I can’t remember all the rules for every game. I have every splotter / Phil Elkund game. But what I find now is Knizia , and some Tom Lehman games are just easy to get to the table. I actually own and played Time of Crisis / Sekighara. Great games. But the problem is, nobody really wants to play 2p games anymore, or they don’t have an attachment to the theme. I have Maria as well but I haven’t gotten a chance to read the rules. A game I think you might want to try is Cave Evil: Warcults. It’s like a fantasy war game with a black metal look to it. Do you know any good fantasy war games? Or how about the Viking 878 or the other games that are 2 v 2. I forget the names of them. But they seem pretty cool. Really looking for those lighter games not written like Phil Elkins essay rules. I don´t think you have to trick me into buying wargames anymore, I think I´m there. It’s not as much of a wargame as War of the Ring, but it still has a lot of combat, card driven actions, as well as a layer of “political control” similar to the COIN series. Also a fantastic non-war CDG I would suggest is Watergate.

I don't know, mate. My wife likes battle line but hates undaunted and everything with a map.

Then play battle line, it's an awesome game. I am sure it's possible to find someone else to play games with a map.
