I became a fan of azhar since 1985 when he scored 3 hundreds in a row on debut. I was 14 and his style ..his gift of timing and back foot play mesmerised me. And his fielding was so marvellous that Kapil the then captain said in 1986 that when azhar walks in to bat he already has 25 runs on board, saved thru his unbelievable fielding. I met him in 1987 and took his autograph...he was very shy soft-spoken well mannered and polite. In 1989 the Indian team was in shambles. Led by srikkanth all senior players had made a union against bcci for want of increase in the match fees (players didn't get so much money those days) .Azhar did not rebel.He was satisfied with what he got.He became the captain and rest is history. ...His personality changed after 1998....still can't believe that he could be accused .He hit a century in the last match too.!! He fought the case for 12 years and finally court has cleared him and I hope he will impart his cricketing wisdom and knowledge to youngsters for betterment of indian cricket.

Azharuddin class can not be compared to Gangualy and dhoni.Azharuddin did the captaincy of Indian team in the period where Indian team was full of very mediocre players except Sachin but because azharuddin was very talented that with that very mediocre team he got lot of success.He is still amongst the most successful captain for India.The team he captained was a very weak team.If dhoni and virat and gangualy have to lead the team then they will lose almost 90% matches. In his era all the teams got greatest batsmans and bolwlers and ofcourse very fast pitches.Dhoni is not the first captain cool but azharuddin was the first cool captain whose expressions would hardly changed whatever the situation would be. I m the witness of that great era of cricket when watched one of the best bowlers, batsman and fielders of all the time.I still miss those close encounters, a fight for every single run.

Azar started off his career as a fine wristy middle order batsman and at that point in time, nobody else has that kind of style. Unique style, used a light bat and mainly scored ones and twos but also had the skill to score boundaries and score at a fast rate comparable to today's T20 standards. Then captaincy came along and it started off well but as the years progressed, his batting skills dwindled, got too involved in captaincy and management of team. Then came the illegal things, bookies, parties, match fixing, money, bollywood, wealth etc. End was a disaster, many great batsman have got standing ovation, guard of honor when they played their last match but he was disgraced and banned for life. For folks born in the 80s like me, Azar was an inspiring figure and treated with respect like how a Mentor is treated. Of course, all that got lost when he chased after money and sangeetha bijlani.

The last time India jad the jersey of 98 coca cola trophy (had blue shaded trousers instead of the darker ones) was in 97 akai singer champions trophy, which was the first day and night series to be held in Sharjah. It was a quadrangular series which had Pakistan, England and West Indies as the other 3 teams. Neither India nor Pakistan qualified for the finals. England won the trophy with West Indies as the finalists. India infact didn't win a single match in the series with Tendulkar as the captain. This 98 series saw a big come back for the Little Master and Sharjah witnessed a much relieved Tendulkar in the same jersey he wore a year back which was a nightmare. Back to back centuries, against the mighty Australia. Tendulkar made his bat reply to the world. What's the best part of the Sharjah series? It's Tony Greig. As a 90s cricket crazy kid, I miss his voice a lot.
