My recruiter was pretty straight forward. I appreciate him for that.

I was a Navy recruiter for 6 yrs. Here are the top 5 things I lied about. 1. Wow! A 32 on the ASVAB is a good score! (It was the bare minimum... but I am not a dream crusher.) 2. Girl, when you get to bootcamp and loose a couple pounds, all the guys are going to be chasing you. 3. Yes, I can see you as a Navy Seal. (However most never make it!) 4. You are going to get to see the world. (However, you could go nowhere but a Air base in Oklahoma.) That happened and I felt really bad. 5. The food is great! (Well, I would never actually say that, but avoid that question all together)

Retired Marine here, just had to defend the Navy recruiters, I was Marine recruiter, and I can say that Marine, Navy, and Air Force recruiters overall are outstanding.. you notice I said nothing about the Army recruiter..haha.. watch your back..

I got the orders lie. I finished A-School in Pensacola back in June. Finished top 5 of my class out of 20 and got the east coast, west coast, and overseas. I chose overseas and they sent me to Oklahoma. Hooyah.

My recruiter was excellent. She actually listened to me and made sure I chose the career(s) that I wanted. Great support. She really worked on my behalf. Also my dad is a retired Marine. He was with me every step of the way. I’m sure that helped a lot 😆

if you're a good recruiter you know not to lie. kids these days know how to look things up online and know who to talk to. just dont take advice from people who have never been in the navy...

My friend, youre talking to people who havent entered the military and possibly havent spoken to a recruiter yet - but are using a lot of jargon, both navy and military specific. You have to assume these people dont know anything.

The part of the video that made the most sense is 6:55 to 7:49, the determined sailor will make their own success. As far as going to sea, it's the Navy, plan on going to sea at some point or just don't join. All the rest of this video? If your recruiter tells you this bullshit, call them out on it. I was a Navy recruiter, I never told anyone any of this bullshit, I told all of my recruits that it's like any other job, you will have good and bad days, you'll have easy and hard days. All of the success you might have in any branch of the military is up to the individual, not the service.

Glad to see its the same for you yanks as it is us Brits, when i got out of British Army basic training and got asked really think and consider then pick my top 3 locations i want to be posted to (all my choice were bases in the UK). I got none of these and ended up spending the next 2 years in Germany haha

I think this is one of your best videos, I agree with all of your points! I about fell over when you mentioned that a lot of Cryptos don't go to sea. Over 20 years for me, and I never went to sea, even though I wanted to (I assumed Navy = Ship). Some Cryptos do go to sea, though, it just depends on your specialty. And Air Crew, also. They did send me to Iraq a couple of times, they call us "Sand Sailors." Great video, and great advice!

When I joined the recruiter was a little shifty with a similar changing jobs line, but did have some good advice about preparing for boot camp etc. At my boot camp there were a handful of undesignated recruits who were able to get an A school but it's much better and easier to get one at MEPS. If you draw shore duty orders at some point in the Navy, depending on where it is, you might be given a BAH. For Instance when I was a Corpsman I was TAD to the Navy base in Bahrain for six months, I lived in the barracks (which was more like a hotel lol) but a colleague of mine, a single E3 Corpsman, who was there for a year did receive BAH so he could rent a place in town. But like JT said, this is an exception, most rates will find you on a ship or if on shore in the barracks as lower ranking enlisted.

I just spoke to an ex recruiter two minutes ago..he is now an OTR driver. He said they dont need to lie the Navy sells itself. I was in the USAF and they lied, lied, lied..and so did the army.

I walked in my recruiters office at 21 knowing everything I wanted with a bunch of research. They knew they couldn’t talk me into anything

I wanted to be a combat medic more than anything. My Army recruiter flat out lied and said "Well there aren't any openings currently." So if you're thinking of signing up-take your time and explore every MOS, talk to veterans, but DO NOT rely on your recruiter. Their sole task is getting you to sign up, then talking you into some bullshit MOS they're slim on.

I was an undesignated fireman and I did all of my extra work when I was mess cranking. I made SM3. I went from the crappiest job to the easiest job!

I was in the navy back in the early 90's as a radioman in Japan , dealing with message traffic. Because you had to have top secret clearance in a secured building they did give us a food allowance because we could not leave the building to eat or get food. We had to bring our own food. But because of that we had to pay to eat at the galley. We liked it when the ship cooks would rotate to the galley they would make some really good stuff

When I was in A school we had a wish list. Pick 3 places you want to be stationed. I chose east coast on a ship. I got Japan air craft carrier. Ha ha.

I was raised as a Navy brat and enlisted right after HS. I'm the 'black sheep' of the family I suppose, I got out after 8 yrs (GMM2) - My father, stepfather, and older brother all retired plus 20 (E-8 / E-9 / E-8). It's been many years now, but every word you said rings true. No idea how I happened across your video - but nice job. Go Navy.

im a navy recruiter, i tell my applicant straight out i can only sell you the navy now base on your asvab and base on your physical and background if your citizen or not. i also tell them straight out that you can just tell meps that you dont want that job, or if they pick a job theyre he or she are not obligated to leave with that job. i tell them also job in the navy is like stock market sometimes the job you want are there and sometime theyre not. i tell them straight out also that if you do good scoring a 95% and above most likely you be able to pick station you want but not guarantee. and undes are most likely be offered to greencard holder because they have to complete theyre background check prior leaving for the navy. and my first command i seen 90% of undes strike the job they wanted that because they volunteer outside theyre working hours to learn the rate they want and submitting the pqs prior being up to strike. i tell my applicant straight out what theyre going to because in the future ill be working with them. i tell them what the realistic base on my experience and what i actually know. for striking if your up, you dont wait another 6 month to strike, you have three looks once your up to strike now its your option to wait another six months if you miss all those three looks. and its up to your NC if his keeping up with the community rates and kept on notifying them that so and so want to strike, you also got to remember that what if seaman timmy want to strike CTI but both of his parent are not citizen do you think the navy will give them that job. think outside why the cant strike a particular job a good NC should be able to explain why they cant strike. about going underway you join the navy. about the quotas its true but you have to look at it this way my station for example 5 recruiter we are goal to put 6, that mean we need to put one each month and one have to put two. i put three or four every month i tell my applicant straight forward about it because they see me process other applicant at once. i tell them straight forward if you dont want to join it is ok i dont need to lei because i have other applicant. "i rather have you not join than join and at the end of the day you tell me your not willing to ship because you dont like the job you want then i have to find a replacement for you. all the negativity you heard maybe they got a mess up recruiter or maybe you got a mess up career counselor that doesnt want to do extra leg work to help theyre sailor to strike. why sell the extra pay like housing or what ever it is when it is not guarantee. just be straight forward to your applicant. it is simple know what your applicant want from the navy, tell them about the navy good or bad, if they still want to process tell them straight out that you understand everything. i feel bad about those sailor that got miss lead by theyre recruiter not giving them the entire details, recruiter need to spend more time with theyre future sailor or applicant and tell them what theyre getting in to and what need to be expected so in the future no one will post something like this video.

I went recruiter as an E-4 in 2003. I went through the Army Core of Engineers and they paid for all my utilities as well as rent.

I went undesignated and loved it. God is Great. Navy is Awesome. I put that extra time in the evening after work. It's the Navy not everyone qualifies. The food is great and my recruiters were awesome. Best decision ever.

Hey..!!!! My first duty station was Weapons Test Squadron at China Lake and I loved it. 40 minutes from the Sierras, 2 hours from La and Las Vegas, and the weather let’s you ride motorcycles 363 days a year. There was no Galley, so we got food allowance and bbq year round.

The one that essentially killed my Navy career was "you can just put in a cross-rate package after you get to the fleet" I wanted to be a Diver and do to a undermanned and negative command I was never given a opportunity in my 4 years. This essentially left me feeling I could have given more for my country....5 years and a bachelors degree later the feeling hasn't gone away.

And if you want to change your job at the "PRD" you have to be currently in a "not critical" job rating. Yes, it's true; certain jobs and certain ratings fall under a prioritization. Essentially, you may never be able to change your job. It's possible to apply to an officer program, but remember, there's only a percentage of those people who get accepted to be a Navy Officer (regardless of having a Bachelors degree).

The first lie you mentioned almost happened to me, luckily I had someone in the Navy to talk to. If you're in the process of joining/wanting to joining DO talk to someone who is currently serving (like in person/over the phone) it'll help a lot.

I went to visit my recruiter after Boot Camp and A-school. I seriously asked his advice on which uniform I should wear to travel to meet my ship. It was spring at the time, but warm where I was going. He told me to wear my DRESS BLUES. To PI.

My recruiter was like "You might wanna look into other things than MA because everyone does it" I was like alright so I'm between MA and LS now. Totally different things but they both seem like something I want to do...

Here's my take. I joined the Navy at the ripe old age of 17 in 1983. The recruiter that I had was actually quite honest. He was a Second Class AT and he told me that he could tell me how glorious the Navy would be but he wouldn't do that. After signing the papers and having my father sign to let me join, I spent the next 4 years in Aviation and the rest of my career until I was medically discharged in the teams. The bottom line is this, the military will do what it takes to get you to join. The military life is not an easy one and generally, the job you do is directly related to your aptitude and demeanor and not based on what someone promises you can do. That being said, the military is not for everyone. So, if you are in the military and complain everyday about how your recruiter screwed you, perhaps you shouldn't have joined to begin with simply because you don't have the aptitude nor the demeanor for it.

One point that was correct but incomplete... The BAS (food money) is both true and false. If you live on a base, or work on a base you are completely correct, they give you the money and take it back since galleys are available (either way food is covered for yourself). If you happen to be in a location where galley is unavailable (recruiting), the base galley is shut down, the ship has a yard period and the ships galley is down or you are on any type of duty independent you get the full amount in the paycheck as compensation. Also if you go on leave, travel, temporary duty somewhere, you will get the amount of BAS in your paycheck to cover the period you are gone so you can buy food. Just adding this for the readers so they can get a full understanding how this works. I always had my full BAS amount as a recruiter, when my LPD was in the ship yards, a few times when the galley on base was out and every time I was in C school or TAD since galley is only "free" for those who are actually stationed there. Good video. I am currently on recruiting duty and yeah there are recruiters out there who will tell you what you want to hear and there are honest recruiters. My office tells every applicant that whatever we say can be verified by Google and youtube. We are simply here to tell our stories. I let them know that if they truly understand the product we are selling, they are more likely to enjoy it than if they discover we lied to them. Plus, it only takes one person to spread the word that we are a bunch of liars to ruin a market for that branch. At the end of the day it is a job, the job asks a lot and has some bad days and it has some awesome days as well.
