As anglers we are so lucky that we are not constrained to just five flies! If you were though what five flies would you be heading down to the river with on opening day?
I found it quite difficult to narrow down my choice of flies. For me these five flies would fill me with confidence if I had them in various sizes and weights.
I would love to know what would your top five be? Let me know in the comments section below.

I live in eastern Pennsylvania in the foothills of the southern Pocono Mountains. We have few cold water lakes and ponds, but many creeks, streams and the Lehigh River near by. My farm abut's a trout creek. Opening day in Pennsylvania is April 2nd, although we have "Fly Fishing Only Catch and Release Streams" that are open year around. It has been interesting to learn about your choices in the British Isles for opening day. Flies that I've never heard of! I am eager to tie them up and try them out here. Unfortunately I have been recovering from a hand operation since mid-January and haven't been able to tie until now. Fortunately, while convalescing, I have been able to binge watch your videos. Every cloud ... eh? My go-to-flies on opening day are classic, the Hare's Ear Wet fly, Micro Pheasant Tail, Zebra Midge or a Wooly Bugger , unless there is a hatch on. Our earliest hatches are the Little Black Stone Fly and midges, occuring now. Thank you for the videos and good luck Opening Day!

Thanks John, I trust your hand is well on the mend? Those are a good selection of flies and I am sure they will do you proud. Tight lines for opening day.

Thoroughly enjoyed that Lindsay!!, it kicks off here on the 1st and I'm gagging to get out fishing, my fly boxes are full to bursting and waiting for me to lose my flies in the trees, got to agree with you on the grunter and I'm going to have a go with jinglehammer too. Cheers for that!! ATB Chris.

The Grunter is the go to banker for early season for me. I agree perfectly suited to high water, ripple, back eddies, under a bush alongside a fallen log. Either with a gentle presentation or a splash to bring out a fish from cover or the depths. Always worth a try on stillwater #10 #14 it is both subtle and just looks foodie. Other river patterns for me are iron blue, greenwells, hares ear, March brown, gnats, midges, klinks.

Some nice flies there Lindsay.. In march I would definitely have a copper head pheasant tail nymph, gold head haresear. Czech nymph , F fly , winged greenwells . That's my 5

Yep still snow here and it's snowing lightly right now lol , there are a couple rivers that are free of ice though and u can fish the rivers in my " fishing zone " all year from lake ontario to a set of train tracks about 1 km up river , so the steelhead fishing has started already

Thanks Lindsay, sound advice as usual, totally agree with the Grunter and I'd have a March Brown as well. My 67th season and I can hardly wait up here. Upper Clyde awaits and I would stick on a couple of Pheasant tail weighted nymphs and a Rough Olive wet. Look out here I come.Thanks for the prize flies, I am chuffed. I've sent you my home address, please let me know if you get it. Cheers, stay safe and I hope you have the tightest of lines. Big Davie

Elk Hair Caddis and PTN for me. Surprised the PTN is missing from your top five. Floatant Gel or powder????
@lindsayiflyfish
@lindsayiflyfish 2 жыл бұрын
Good choices, It's not easy whittling down hundreds of patterns luckily we don't have to. I treat my flies at the vice with floatant. While on the water I use Hunts Original Powder to recover the flies.
