Also a good option for simple drinks is the Mule family. Spirit, lime juice, and ginger beer. I guess technically that makes it a highball and not a cocktail, but still great for simple preparation, and they have commonly available ingredients. I also like it because it goes well with almost any spirit, so you can customize based on what you have available and what you like. They also all have names, which is fun. Vodka: Moscow Mule Bourbon: Kentucky Mule Gin: London Mule Rum: Jamaica Mule Tequila: Mexican Mule And if you like cocktails more than highballs, you can use ginger syrup instead of ginger beer, which makes it a Buck instead of a Mule.

Brooooo simple syrup is just sugar and water, you can do it 2:1 or 1:1 so like 1kg of caster sugar then 1000ML of cold water and just stir it until it all dissolves you might have to let it rest a couple of times before stirring again
@redssign

@@stormee14 I'm pretty sure that caster sugar is white sugar now (Caster sugar was called that because the sugar was packed into a mould and then sugar syrup was poured overtop, and then left to dry in a paper packaging. Due to industrial methods, that method is obsolete.)

Can you do a “how to” video on making a Rusty Nail? With the Drambuie? It’s one of my grandpa’s favorite drinks and I’ve never been able to get it quite right. Pretty sure it doesn’t have too many ingredients so it would be perfect for quarantine too!

Just play with the ratio to your taste. My preferred Scotch for Rusty Nail is JW Black. I'll use Laphroaig if I'm in an Islay mood on hot day.

@@svennoren9047 I don't see Rusty Nails with an orange twist very often! That would definitely add something to the drink, though unfortunately I can't test it at the moment since we don't have any Drambuie... I'm trying to figure out what kind of scotch would go well with it. I'm not much of a scotch guy...

I realize this comment is from a year ago, but I'm binging all the HTD episodes so here I am. The Rusty Nail is my favorite cocktail. There are a lot of opinions about it, but here is mine, and I'd argue it's the right one. 1. A Rusty Nail should be made a with a /good/ single malt scotch (or blended if you insist). Just because it's a cocktail doesn't mean you should break out the Red Label. If made properly, the scotch component is a dominant part of the flavor profile. 2. Everyone claims the ratio is 2 parts scotch to 1 part Drambuie. Sure, that's a good starting point, but I've found over the years that toning down the Drambuie and using high quality scotch makes a really fantastic drink. I recommend 4 parts scotch to 1 part Drambuie. 3. Drambuie does limited releases regularly w/ specific single malts distilleries as partners. If you can, pick up one that matches up with your scotch preference and up your Drambuie ratio slightly (3 to 1). This will /really/ help to emphasize the scotch in the cocktail. Finally, I believe a Rusty Nail can only be mixed and served one way and one way only, which is it /must/ be mixed in a separate glass, and strained over one large (preferably clear) ice cube in a rocks glass. Building the drink in the glass it is meant to be served in is a no-no, and leads to too much dilution. This is a drink that needs very minimal dilution, and should be as close to how you'd like the temperature of a straight whisky pour over ice. I really really love Isle whiskies, and particularly love Talisker 21 (unfortunately no longer produced). For a short while there was a run of Drambuie made using Talisker as the base scotch, and it is my preferred Drambuie when paired with a Talisker 18 in a Rusty Nail. Utterly fantastic, and will not disappoint. Personally, if you're going to use a blended scotch in your Rusty Nail you should use one that stands proper such as some of the offerings from Compass Box or a Green or Gold (18) label.
