Placement of boulders or rocks preferably boulders ( it's sculpture) are my #1 in fact they are just as important as the maple for me they are most complimentary and the Japanese know this....if you can get water activity even better..I'm finding ground cover to be challenging.

For dappled shade I’m going with Japanese prostrate yews, traditional dwarf(ish) Japanese and Korean (if I can find them) azaleas, Himalayan sweet box, and sweet woodruff (in contained areas). Oh, and various Proven Winners ajuga (also contained). I’ve rejected other than can become invasive (I’m in the woods surrounded by farmland). I like going with shrubby ground covers as they aren’t going to spread. Ferns are also good and some of them are native.

Really great tips but would have really loved to seen pictures of some of the plants you referenced or examples of the tips. I love Mr. Nationwide! Also when you refer to hot zones you always refer to Cali or Florida, don’t forget us folks in Texas! Do you have customers in or around Austin?

One quick comment if you’re in the north I’m just north of Philadelphia when you talk about container plants there’s not a whole lot that will survive outside in the winter with broadleaf evergreens or needle evergreens deciduous plants do fine. The problem is the pots freeze and if they dry out while frozen Chance they will not survive the winter exceptions Alberta Spruce and Pjm’s

We do warn that using containers will bring your trees lowest range on the FDA Hardiness scale up one zone. During the winter months we do recommend that you bring container trees inside to a non heated garage or basement during the night time or during extreme cold to protect it from freezing (remember to put it back outside during the day). We recommend that you do keep an eye on the moisture content of the soil when bringing the plant inside.

Landscaping creates a garden. Otherwise you just have a collection of trees, which can be fun too. But with gorgeous trees, I like to show them off most dramatically.
