When I was hit by a car while riding my fixed gear to the gym I remembered the moment the car’s front bumper was about 2 feet from T boning me going at about 40 mph and at that very moment I remember I quenched my entire body and took in a huge breath and my entire body flew onto the hood and my head cracked the wind shield, sending my flying 20 yards and I do remember seeing the ground, then the sky, ground, sky, ground, sky then crash landing onto the burning hot cement which dealt me about 7 abrasions, a fractured knee cap and internal bleeding in my brain, thanks to god I fully recovered in about 2 months, the nurses said it’s a miracle I was alive or could still talk.

Awesome that you cheated death and lived to tell about it. I almost got hit a couple days ago by an idiot when I had the light. Certainly thankful he heard me hollering while he was about 6" away from hitting me and about to step on it.

I was brake checked 2 days ago. In Santa Monica, CA we have bike lanes. I can only assume the dude in the Camry disliked the fact that I was "filtering" through traffic so he drove into the bike lane, slammed on his brakes causing me to hit his trunk, roll over his rear quarter panel and then hear him floor it. Disappears over the hills never to be seen again. Snapped my brake lever, cracked my carbon fork, shredded my seat and bent my drop bars. I'm fine aside from a painful shower from my road rash.

Just going to parrot the Kilo WT recommendation. I bought mine as an inexpensive urban all-rounder to ride with my kids. I liked it so much that I've been slowly customizing it: (Nitto handlebars, seatpost, and stem, Cane Creek headset, Brooks B17 Narrow saddle, All-City pedals, etc...). Anyway, it's a great bike out of the box...and even better with some relatively inexpensive upgrades.

I’ve been hit by cars 3 times. Fortunately never got hurt badly and it’s been 14 years and over 130,000 miles since the last time I was hit. I chalk it up to experience and heightened awareness that has kept me safe since.

Surprisingly me and all my friends have been hit by cars before. I've seen 2 of my friends get hit in person. One of them got hit so bad the frame actually cracked in half and went flying. He broke his collarbone, both arms, one fibula, and had internal bleeding in the head. It actually scarred me and one other friend that were riding with him that day. We actually taught he might've died and we also stopped biking for about half a year because of the incident. Thankfully he fully recovered and now we're more safer now while biking. We used to never wear helmets cuz back then honestly we were kinda stupid and thought helmets were uncool, hot, and inconvenient. Be safe out there.

Been sideswiped a few times when I was a messenger. I always try to tell people if you get hit, to not try to brake. Keep the motion of riding and try to "step out" of your pedals almost like a jump. You want to be in the air as long as possible so you can control the fall. One time, I was riding up the 1st ave bike lane approaching 14th st in New York City. Another cyclist tried to pass me on the right while in the intersection. A car decided to make a quick left turn at the last second, and the dude freaked out and ran into me to avoid the car. The crash changed my course straight into a pair of newspaper bins. Knowing I couldn't avoid it, I jumped off the bike and over the bins. Only got a couple of lacerations on my legs from not quite making it over, but it coulda been worse.

1.) Would you ever try reversing & inverting drop bars? It looks like it would give them a "townie bar" sort of position in exchange for losing the real "drops", with maintaining a sort of hoods position in the enclosed-bullhorn sort of zone. Or try BMX bars on a fixed, maybe? Could you talk about more "cruiser style" components at some point? I've never seen anyone spend time to examine the handling and other effects of using back-angled high riser, townie, moustache and similar "negative reach" bars. Also would like to hear your opinions on the more relaxed geometry of a cruiser frame, if 26" thicc comfort tires vs the 700c road standard would be something to consider for a fixie, especially in areas with crummy roads. And what you think of the fancy-designed chainrings and so on. Most Cruisers are set up single speed/coaster brake but there's no reason they couldn't be done fixed, right? Also - one piece BMX/ashtabula cranksets seem like a fixed sort of option if someone is converting an older amercian 10-speed or cheap bike to fixed - any thoughts on those?

nice comment question: I must say that 75% of my serious crashes involved cars. I'm under the impression that the more you actually follow the rules and laws, the more likely you are overlooked and end up being hit by someone not paying attention. 1st crash was a right turn driver who was busy looking at oncoming traffic then actually looking in front of him to see me pedaling by. Got T-boned, i shouldered the windshield, but was sent flying and head onto the curb and bleeding out. Ended with staples and now wearing a helmet because you can predict the impact, but have no control when sent flying! 2nd crash was me being run off the road by the drivers passenger side mirror! On a downhill of all things. He really had to rev up just to clear past me and closed the gap because of oncoming traffic. 3rd crash was on a mountain pass by a driver who was scared of driving too close to the edge. So they were in the middle of the road and i had to ride too close on the wall downhill going 35mph and hit the wall resulting in a fire sale. Of course since that driver didn't feel anything his his van, decided to drive off. Every other time when I act like a "jackass" by weaving through lanes and running reds/stops. I often get ridiculed and nowhere close to being squeezed out or hit. Just because the driver actually pays attention in that regard!

Hey Zach, I'm looking to upgrade to a better quality bike. At the moment, I have a Pure Fix Original that I bought in 2011, and for me, I think it's time to upgrade. I feel that is a little uncomfortable for my riding style (it might be too relaxed for preference idk) I like longer rides (at least 15 miles). But I like to ride as quick as possible and just mash to my destination. I prefer something pretty nimble and flickable to squeeze in between cars (not any crazy, reckless riding). I hope to make it a commuter at some point. Also I would want something that fits some wider tires. Any suggestions?

Broadsided on a roundabout (uk) in broad daylight. Brakes wouldn't have stopped it even though I insist on using them. It hurt. My gripe is I cannot get correct chainline. The hub is too far in, the cranks too far out. But, I am using junky cranks from my lbs' bin. They are double. I modified a front disc hub with a bolt on sprocket and run it further to the right as I rebuilt the wheel. Are fixed specific cranks' sprocket holes offset further in? I've been doing it all Heath Robinson.

Hit by three cars and a motorcycle. I've ridden two centuries and an Everest a week on real 70ies steel and wool for the past ten years(never once wore a helmet). First one was a city council member who drove up on the side walk, I flew 15 feet into the street, got a ticket and sued for minor damages to her bumper (mangled ankles from vintage shoes and clips / crutches). Second was a mini van taking a right, no blinker, hit the back of my bike just did a lil skid no fall. Third was a volvo taking a right with no blinker, hit me in the hip hard but kept it up, actually did a 720 skid, guy said it was the most awesome thing he ever saw. Finally was hit and run by a big motorcycle (drunk) going 60 mph square from behind in a separated bike lane just as I was summiting a mountain, witness said he swerved 8 feet over (crutches and disk damage) he stopped looked around and when I yelled "my back" he left the scene (btw don't yell that after getting hit, lesson learned, even if you are paralyzed). Some recommendations for parts if you want to be satisfied with your bike for life: steel frame from 1973-1976(hopefully De rosa made), campagnolo super record groupo, super record crank 52 42, campy record track pedals, campy breaks, Campy super record break levers, grey break lines, Campy R1 stem, campy long seatpost, Cinelli giro 64 bars, Cinelli white bar ends, Cinelli A1 unicantor, Regina Extra 6 speed freewheel 13-21, Regina extra chain, fiamme rims, Vitoria strada tubulars, Miata tubular tape, REG cage and bottle, alfedo binda straps, and eddy merckx addias shoes. Your welcome I just saved you a lot of buy and try / trial and error.

Im a chicago bike courier. ive been hit by a car about 3 times and i did not suffer any serious injuries thankfully. Although the crappiest one of all of them was when i delivered to a residential building north of downtown. I had literally just mounted my bike and began riding down the bike lane. One car coming from the opposite direction made a left to get to the building's front entrance/lot. I didnt think a 2nd car would follow them close behind FROM THE OPPOSITE LANE. I swerved away from the first car and went straight into the headlight of the 2nd. I flopped over onto the side walk and stood up only to realize my bike took all the impact. My handlebars and cetma rack were bent to one side. Getting up was a big mistake, once they noticed i was ok they stepped on the gas and drove around the building and sped off. Leaving me with a twisted up bike and a broken heart.

How do you feel about and what did you do to deal with the poor factory 45mm chainline provided by the Sugino RD2 “street” cranks. I find running the chainring on the inside to be an ugly and ridicules answer to such an expensive piece of hardware, especially when many other less expensive, quality products are out there that provide an actual track spec 42mm chainline out the box. It’s also crazy funny as their significantly more expensive 75,s has an actual track 42mm chainline and the RD2,s do not.

Wow wasn't expecting this vid to start with that, I'm blessed and cursed that I got hit side on by a bus, though it was only a small one. I just remember almost making it through a large intersection and thinking as it entered my periphery... wtf, really?... A BUS!? I was shunted to the side of its path so it didn't run over me and to my surprise the bike still rides well like nothing happened and despite a broken hand and gnarly wound where the windscreen wiper gouged me, I got off lucky. I've since, sprayed my frame and rims with a reflective bead coating for extra visibility in low light

Got hit by 3 bikes so far in Toronto First one was T boned by a red light running taxi in late summer 2017, I'm still feeling muscular pain from that one to this day. Second one was a few months later when I got doored, my left index finger got scraped all the way to the bone. Third one was by a right turning Jaguar, neither I or my near mint 1990 Rockhopper were damaged badly in that one. All three of these accidents occurred on the exact same road, the first and second one occurred within 250m of each other, but 2 years apart. They were also all in bike lanes. The lesson I took away from my experiences? Don't ride in bike lanes, cars are more likely to hit you there. Also I've had more bike lane accidents but with pedestrians, they love to sprint across it from behind cars without looking.

When I was much younger, I was hit by a car, driven by an off duty cop who had his girlfriend in his lap... yah, front bench seats back then. A couple of years a go I was riding casually on a road when a car passed me (on my left) and immediately turned right directly in front of me. I had to slam on the brakes. Went up on to my front wheel, knew i was going over so jumped off my pedals, did my best Spider-Man landing with the car inches from my head. Bruised knee, sore ankle, I was lucky to survive with only those injuries. I’m sure other riders will have more harrowing examples of being doomed, being literally run over... car divers in general are totally oblivious to cyclists, add in so many distractions, your lucky not to have any injuries.

Yeah, it's so bad when cars misjudge right turns like that. I have seldom experienced it here in the South, and when I have, I generally I have not had to brake to avoid anyone, just felt really uncomfortable and yelled (or at least remarked) at the driver. I have fortunately never had to slam the brakes that hard, and I hope I never will. We need more cyclists on the roads and infrastructure to enable that so that motorists can be educated on cycling.

I was hit by a car on Laguna eastbound, going down the overpass just west of Franklin Blvd in Laguna West. Riding brakeless, this car raced me to the stop light at the bottom of the overpass and cut me off. She even looked behind her shoulder before cutting, but I was going too fast. Next thing I know, I find consciousness in an MRI at Kaiser south Sac. I don't get there much these days since I live and work in LA. On a different note, I ride a Raizin NJS frame, with most NJS parts. Is there a hierarchy for NJS frame brands?

I have been hit by 7 cars. Worst one was going through a stop sign in Cleveland during a blizzard. I slid out and a car coming from the other way couldn't stop(slid through the stop sign). I ended up getting completely run over. Under the car. I still have the tire marks on my messenger bag. I was working as a bike messenger at the time and went to the hospital the next day, got some Vicodin, and was at work the next day. The black and blue mark the size of a tire over half of my body is gnarly

Not to be confrontational, but you've mentioned many times how NJS guidelines are there to level the playing field and enforce quality. I've heard from other locations that there's no real correlation, and there's certainly incentive for these standards to simply be there as a pseudo-protectionist policy for japanese industry, and the creation of keirin racing as post-WWII relief does suggest this. Of course, I'm not going to argue against something like NJS sugino 75s, but do you have any hard data and material comparison sources that correlate NJS with high quality?

@@daveyponderosa9549 I'm very happy, except the dear old Stronglight BB is a creaking. 5-6 years is a good innings mind, and it doesn't impact the speed of my single gear. Covid prevents long rides on me Chorus, which will never creak.

The only crash I've been in while on my bike was around February of last year. I was on my way to my college campus and there was a bit of traffic. The light turned green at a crossing and a bus was blocking the entrance to the bike lane, not on purpose since there were cars up to it's front wheels on it's left. I figure I'd go with the flow of traffic and turn with them to save time and make things easier, but right as I was about to get next to the bus to pass, some ass decided he'd try and beat oncoming traffic to try and get in line first. Thankfully I swerved out of the way in time, but not fast enough to avoid clipping his side. Thankfully the cars I was turning with weren't going very fast and stopped well before I landed on the pavement. My bike and I were fine fortunately, and after shooting him a quick 'What the fuck?!', I was on my way with only some swelling on my ankle and some back pain. It went away some 4 days later.

I’m from Toronto, I did courier last winter. Anyways...I was on a 2 way street with 2 lanes each way...there was traffic on the left lane so I stayed in the right lane. As I’m going a lady turning left on the other side without checking if there was anyone or anything past the traffic lane so I just went into her...

I've been hit once when doing delivery in Indianapolis, the guy didn't check his mirrors and I hit his front fender and slid on market Street(still made with brick) on my face ruining my delivery to Sun King. In insurance money to replace the broken parts equaled out to how much I spent on the bike because I bought lots of stuff used or discounted. So my accident wasn't really that bad. I got hit in front of our city county building and a cop was outside and saw the whole thing.

I got hit by a car commuting home at night and I am pretty sure it was because my rear lights weren’t high enough. They were both on my seatpost and I got hit after a small roller hill that likely blocked the driver’s view. He was also speeding and reckless and it was a hit and run to boot. However, if I had a light up high on my helmet and centered on my bag, as I now do, I may have been spared. That’s a tip I would give everyone, have a wide profile for your light setup, up high and mid, and even low on your frame. That way you are a larger object in low light situations. Luckily most of the force of the fall was on my bike bag and my ass, the bag likely saved me from worse injury, so wear a bag and a helmet as well.

I have been hit by cars too many times to remember. I was never seriously injured, and my bike was never damaged beyond repair. I was lucky enough to react just in time to avoid a direct hit from the car. Every time except once, the cars never stopped. The one time they did stop, they were extremely rude, and actually made fun of me. I blasted them back, screaming that they could have killed me.

I forgot to add, the only reason the one motorist stopped at all, is because there was a stoplight. The car swerved over in my lane while we were going down a hill, and knocked me off my bike. I was trapped in my toeclips, and slide down the hill, next to the car. Somehow I was not injured, or run over by any other cars while sliding down the hill stuck to my bike. I now use Power Grips straps instead of toeclips. I use track racing pedals, and attach the Power Grips straps to them. You get full power for the entire pedal rotation, just like clip in pedals, and it’s a breeze to slide your feet out. Also I wear Chrome cycling shoes. They have a shank for pedaling efficiency, and are weather proof and stylish.

I got creamed on my GT bmx bike at about 12 years old. I was crossing a street and a guy in a Subaru outback hit me going about 30 mph. i got sent pretty far, but was more scared than anything to get the guys info or anything. it bent my peg into the fork and broke the front axle. i tried hiding it from my parents because i was so embarrassed.

Zach, I saw in one of your videos reviewing state bicycle company you said something along the lines of, “I’m not sure if the customer service would be as good for a ‘normal’ customer.“ That was absolutely my experience! I ordered a bike from this company for my wife because she just wanted a commuter and doesn’t know enough about bikes to care about crank stiffness, etc. (also she’s 5’3” and the kilo TT pro was sold out in her size). ANYWAYS… When I received the bike, there was a huge dent in the fork and the paint was removed. This was clearly shipped from the factory this way as the box I received the bike in had no damage whatsoever. On top of that, the material covering the fork where this dent was placed was undamaged. I reached out to the customer service line and they offered me a $40 refund (even though the bike was $300) or $65 store credit. To add insult to injury, there is nothing on their website even worth buying with the store credit. Total disappointment and an overall bad experience. Not to mention it took them five days to get back to me.

Hi. I just got hit by a car on 3rd Nov. It was an Uber that came from.behind. I was riding on the side of the road like always and he just got my side and sped off. Since he hit my leg, I hav a fractured fibula. Luck that I have no other damage. Just some bruises from landing on concrete. I'm in a cast now. I live in Mumbai. India

I have been hit once while on a bicycle. A woman ran a stop sign and hit me. I was going 24 miles per hour and she was going somewhere around 15. Luckily she had to slow down as she was making a left turn so couldn't be going the speed limit. I flew over her hood and landed on the other side of the car but aside from my ankle being hurt from the bumper hitting it I ended up pretty much just fine. The pavement was wet and relatively smooth and I think that's the only reason I didn't get bad road rash. She gave me $20 to fix the bike and drove me home. I couldn't even buy a new wheel for $20.
