I'm a little late to this party, but I just wanted to say I loved this video. I had just watched another video by a young rider and he was far less knowledgeable and obviously had never ridden with a sidecar before. I have a 2023 and took the leg guards off for summer riding. Do you find there's a difference between air flow with them on and off? Also instead of the reserve gas tank I'm going to rely on the jerry can that came with it. It's also a useful can to deliver gas to friends who need it. Good video. Do you still ride yours?

Hello, Morick - hope I got that right - my husband bought a 2008 patrol in 2015 and we go off road with it a lot out here in Arizona. He likes to get it sideways on sweeping corners on the dirt roads. We watched this video to see about the upgrades. He said ours is old enough to have a friction damper so we don't need the hydraulic version. There's a 3.5 gal. NATO can on the sidecar step and another gallon in the boot. Haven't been stranded yet but we've had to stop often enough so the gas is always good. Overall he agrees with all your suggestions. You have the "correct" approach to Ural ownership. As he's pointed out, if you stay within it's limitations the surprises will be rewarding.

While you are correct that additional gas is a MUST have for the Ural your solution is somewhat iffy. Rather opt for two jerry cans that a) do not take away any space (pillion or storage) and b) it looks cool as it fits the bike image. As an added bonus it also serves as ballast since you mount them on the tub.
@GasTachs
@GasTachs 3 жыл бұрын
Iffy? why so. I have a jerry can already on the tub. The AUX tank is a approved gas tank AND while i'm driving I can pull from it rather than stopping and getting out my jerry can. The ural is not laking of space so I didnt lose any storage
@belsnickel5538
@belsnickel5538 3 жыл бұрын
@@GasTachs No not iify like in it would explode :) . I'm sure you won't just lob any can up there, it just looks weird. I love stopping to get the can out because it gives me time to stretch and space for me is a premium. I normally ride with a monkey on 2-4 week off road trips.

I have the same rig and year. IMO the steering dampener knob that comes with the bike, if adjusted properly, will do just fine. The sixteen position dampener that’s on the newer rigs is better. A carbed Ural, running tip top should get between 28-30 mpg. The Fuel injected models get much better. Gas mileage varies depending on riding weight, how driver runs her, windshields, highway or side roads, etc. Running an older Ural at constant 70 mph isn’t a good thing. These older rigs are fine around 60 mph. The even older 650’s will run all day at 50-55. I’m very close to turning the Odometer at 100,000 Kms. Where it will roll back to zero. It’s been fun! Still is….

@@chessmeister596 The 2014 and up had big improvements over the older bikes. My Ural is still doing great. I took a trip where I was on the Ural from 4 am until 7 pm. The bike ran great, got 34- 46 mpg. I was able to use a throttle lock for most of the trip, helped out a lot with comfort and fuel mileage. The Ural is like any other machine, if you keep up on the maintenance it will be reliable and last, There are people who have put 50k and more miles on their Urals. They are not designed to get out on the interstate and go fast, they are best at 55-65 mph. I plan on using mine to ride the older highways and back roads.

5 gallons is around 19l. If you do have consumption 19l per 100km (or even worse 90 as you mentioned) something is horribly, horribly wrong.. Even in 70mph (what is really not a recommender speed for ural). Average consumption is 7-9 litres
@GasTachs
@GasTachs 3 жыл бұрын
I can believe that fuel consumption on fuel injected but this is dual carb. I'm sure the carbs could be tuned and it should improve a little . as for the the 70mph, it rides perfect at the speed, the tires are rated for it, there is no issue going that speed. Now anything faster... that might be an issue. Thanks for tuning in!

I have a 2008 Gear-Up & I never take is over 60mph. This is a 1942 design & their top speed then was 95kph. My engine is high revving in 4th gear at 60mph & I just choose not to push it any further. I have a friend with a 2006 Gear-up who used to race along & he blew his engine. As for that big wine cask you have on the back of your bike, I went with period correct gas cans (2 totalling 5gal) mounted in stands on the front & rear left side of the sidecar. On the right front of the sidecar is a pillion box & I put another one on the left rear of the bike on the side of the fender. Inside that pillion box I remote mounted the battery with quick disconnect clips. Batteries here in Arizona only last 2-3 years in the heat (I usually got 10-years from my batteries in Colorado). Now the bike battery live in the pillion box that I keep in the house when not riding the bike. I never needed a steering dampener on my bike. Maybe yours on the pivot of the handlebars is too loose. I also added a throttle lock (not active cruise control) on the throttle so I can take my right hand off the throttle whenever I need to and maintain speed. I do like your engine temp gauges & am going to see about adding them. My Gear-Up averages 24.5 miles per gallon. My last fill-up was 7.8 gal at 193.1miles. I'm just over 320 pounds so my bike is not carrying a light load. I'm guessing your worse mileage is due to running the engine much faster than the company recommends.
