5 - The 1.8t - While the 1.8t engine isn’t currently known for making big power or being particularly impressive it had to make this list. The 1.8t is without a doubt the most important engine in making VW one of the most tuner friendly cars on the road. In the late 90s and early 2000s most of the completion had 4 cylinder naturally
aspirated engines making slightly less power. With some basic bolts ons and a chip (yeah back then it was actually a soldered on chip) you could get a 1.8t pretty easily to around 250hp. You can debatably say that the 1.8t paved the way for the entire VW
enthusiast community which is why we put it at #5
4 The 3.0t (Supercharged) Audi has been making S4's since the late 90's and if you followed them at all you know that all of their glory is tied to a ton of grief. We talked a more about the issues that plagued these models in the video about VW and Audi models that seem cheap but are not. The 3.0t is really the first S4 that you
shouldn’t be petrified to own. The 3.0t S4's put out 333hp and with a simple supercharger pulley and software tune you can bump 117hp. This engine being easily tuneable with solid reliability lands it at #4
3 - 5 cylinder turbo Audis - There are a few 5 cylinder Audis that we lumped together because they are essentially cut from the same cloth. The original 5 cylinder turbo was a 2 valve per cylinder engine which was in the Audi 100s. They later changed to
the now more highly coveted 4 valves per cylinder 20V 5 Cylinder turbo. This engine really became most know for when Audi was racing in the 1989 IMSA series with a 5 cylinder turbo all wheel drive Audi 90. That season they won an astonishing 7 of 13
races. All of this history was rolled into the TTRS where they brought back the 5 cylinder turbo putting out 340 hp and with a basic software tune you end up over 400hp. With a turbo upgrade the hardcore TTRs guys are getting upwards of 600hp. Tons of power and tuneability landed the Audi 5 cylinder turbos at #3.
2 - VR6 - There is no way you could put a list like this together with the VR6. For anyone not familiar with the VR6 it has a unique design which was done for a few reasons. Lets look at a few examples so we can talk about how the VR6 is different. In our examples lets assume that they are all 6 cylinders. An inline 6 has all 6 cylinders in a row, this makes for a narrow long engine which generally lends it self to a longer nosed vehicle because of the space required. The V6 engine has 3 cylinders on either side and is generally in a 90 degree V shape. This makes the V6 a much wider and shorter engine than an inline. The VR6 is almost like a mix of the 2.
It a V6 shape with a 15 degree angle to allow the use of a single cylinder head. Also where a V6 would line up the cylinders in parallel the VR6 engine staggers them to allow the engine to be more compact. Aside from the cool design the VR6 is often
used to make big power by adding a turbo or turbos. This engine has been used by VW since the early 90s and even though the don’t really call it the VR6 by name anymore a variation of this engine is found in many models now badged as V6's. The VR6 has a huge cult following in the VW community and there was even an even created in honor of the awesome sounds of the VR6. Its called Wookies in the woods because people often compare the beautiful exhaust note of the Vr6 to the sound of the wookie. All of this heritage lands the VR6 at number 2.
1 - MQB 2.0t - The new 2.0t's found in the MQB have really been a game changer for VW and Audi enthusiast. Historically many of the other vehicle in the segments of the enthusiast cars just frankly out performed many VW models. And while for me this
never discouraged me from the brand it was a clear difference between lets say a 08 STI at 305hp and a MK5 R32 at 250hp. Even the GTI vs the WRX was behind they were more tuneable and handled better. I always felt like fit and finish was VWs advantage
and I was always Ok with getting in a car that I felt was nicer. Now we fast forward to the new 2.0t's. For the first time since the early days of the 1.8t VW/Audi enthusiast models seem to be on top. With just a software tune on these cars you can get a 100hp bump. That is absolutely nuts. We pulled some numbers from Unitronics site because we are a dealer To compare on a previous generation TSI engine to the MQB 2.0t a 2.0t TSI with a K04 turbo upgrade you are looking at 340hp on the MQB 2.0t with a Software tune and a downpipe you are at 337hp. The sheer tuneability of this engine makes it the clear number 1.

3.0T all the way for me. By far the most responsive V6 engine I've ever driven/tested. I love how frenzied it is. And I mean that in a good way. I can also get 30mpg on the highway, which is impressive considering it's output (and that it's hauling around 4000 lbs in the B8.5 S4).

Nice lineup of top gas engines, but I must admit the TDI should be in line with these great mills, especially when talking about a bulletproof engine. The 1.8T I certainly will back up as I’ve personally had one for 18 years, and have taken it from 150 to 320hp. However now I am looking toward the 3.0T supercharged six cylinder motor. Power easily poured with minimal add ons.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together man. Well done. I just wish the mk7's sounded better...but then again I'm spoiled by the sound of my vr6 turbo😜. I know a 4 banger will never sound as good or aggressive as a 6 or 8 but the evo sounds pretty damn good and it's only got a 2 liter. Just wish the newer VW's (particularly the GTI and R) sounded better than it does.

I don't have a top 5, but I do have a number 1. The 1.9 alh code tdi. I've doubled the horsepower and almost tripled the torque with basic bolt ons and a tune through Kermatdi. @parhunter1
@parhunter1 2 жыл бұрын
I get it, this list is all about power potential/tunability. But for my favorite VW engines list I would include the 1.9 TDI, the EA888 1.8Tsi, and the 2.5L. The TDI was great fun to drive, and 50+ mpg on the Hwy was unbeatable when VW came out with them in the 90s. Plus, they lasted for a very long time. The 1.8TSI in the recent Passats, Jettas and Golfs are seemingly very reliable, very spunky (especially passing on the hwy) and very thrifty. And the 2.5 gets my vote for reliability. We have two in my family nearing the 200,000 mile mark and neither has had any issues with the engine or the automatic transmission. And you still see a ton of these on the road. Not the sexiest or most frugal, but a damn near bullet proof engine...and I'll take that any day.

not one person mentioned the 4.0l W8. This is an engineering marvel. like 2 VR4's on a common crank. It is absolutely butter smooth, purrs quietly and takes off quickly. It is not the powerhouses as mentioned and it cannot be turbo charged as there is not enough room. But it is a beautiful motor in every way. Quiet, smooth, no vibration, a treat to be in a car like that. And if looked after, it will do a half million miles easy. the exhaust note is unlike anything out there. Mini Veyron.

great video man; I would have thrown a special shout out to the air cooled Porsche engines people were throwing in the back of super bugs back in the 70s and 80s, it's not really a VAG motor, but it's close enough... in the family so to speak lol. and you failed to mention how the VR design concept was brought over to the French's Bugatti branch, and they used that same 15° rake angle to start when designing the W16 for their first production Veyron. think two interlocking VR8s side by side, and you get the idea lol.

a list of the best VW engines without any mention of the original aircooled t1 engine ! they only made 21 million of them !. lasted for 65 years, could be mended by anyone with spanners, go on forever and are freqently highly tuned for drag racers. without this engine there would be no VW !

I had a 1988 VW fox. The engine & drive train out lasted the body ( rusted ). I was a 1.8L easy to work on. ( shit for power 85 HP as I remember ). The same engine was used the the Rabbit / Scircco / Jetta / Audi models and others. The other thing that wasn't mentioned was the flat 4 that was in the original beetle. What he mostly talks about performance and upgrades. Let me know what other models that engine was used in. Thanks.

Great review ! I would like to see a your review of EA888 gen3 vs. gen3B. Could you present it if you see this comment and you have time ? ex. Pros and cons of the Gen3B modifications made for the Gen3 engine in terms of eco efficincy, maintenance, tuning potential of DI-only/PI-less ... Indeed, I could not find a good comparison of these great engines.

HKS ssqv, custom 2 3/4 inch exhaust with apexi dunk muffler and apexi boost gauge and timer. Interior was all sparco, Sparco ring steering wheel with sparco torino seat. Man I missed that car. Which ECU to use, microsquirt or the original ECU that comes with the TFSI engine? How those would work with my instruments cluster and so on... I cant seem to find any information about what components to use to get that motorswap done. Thank you for these videos their great. Im subscribing :) !

Any advice on the 5.2 v10 thats on the s6 n s8?(not mentioning the r8 since thats why out of my budget) Things to look for other than carbon buildup? Torn between having a large sedan like a s8 or a a4 avant 2.0. I know total different spectrums but the only two i feel comfortable with because not many people typically beat on them like all teh s4s or rs4s.

I get that the ea888 Gen 3, what you reference as MQB, is the latest and most powerful iteration of this series engine. That said, to be fair, the ea888 engine has been around 10 years and has steadily been improved upon each year. Yes, the early ea888 Gen 1 in the Mk6 platform experienced issues, but nearly all of those were sorted out by in later Mk6 models. The truth is that the Gen 3 improved upon Gen 1, but it's still in the same family of engines (ea888). So a possibly more accurate statement may be that the ea888 series engine takes the top spot.

Hi, you mention in the video that the 2.0 tsi of the MK6 can be tuned up to about 340hp and the mk7 up to 337hp. Both cars have TSI engines. My question is: the 2006 -2009 2.0 FSI turbo engine enters this category and is as good and upgradable as the TSI version of the MK6 and MK7? Thanks for your fast response.

Rich V. Similar tuneability on the FSI. To be clear a TSI with an upgraded turbo nets as much power as a MK7 with a tune.

I might put the 1.8 8v and the 1.9 Tdi, and 2.0L(non turbo) in there somewhere. Just for their reliability, and how long they last the 1.6 tdi gets props for lasting the longest for me. My dad has a 1.6 Tdi Jetta with almost 500,000. As far as the 2.8 VR6, I had 3 mk3 Jetta GLX’s one had over 316,000, and another was 256,000 I believe. I had a 88 Jetta 1.8. 8v with 375,000. Most recently i bought a 2011 Jetta S with a 2.0L and a 5spd. Oh, all my cars have been Manual Transmissions. Manual Transmission’s just don’t tear up hardly ever. I’ve only ever seen 2 go bad, 1 got water in the gear oil, and the other was low of oil, so they both burned the bearings up and started roaring.I’m a 3rd generation vw mechanic, if you can’t tell I’ve been dealing with VW’s my whole life.
