The military sniper is one of the more alluring combat positions in general favor. While widely storied in television and film, the actual role of a professional sniper is that of a highly evolved, trained and dedicated marksman with an almost patriarchal role (regardless of gender) as the protector of fellow soldiers and the overseer of a mission. By the mid 1800s, the role of a sniper became a necessary component in modern warfare - with more and more companies developing equipment and weaponry for the heavy task. Although there has been literally hundreds of prolific snipers in the history of combat, the following seven have proven their worth not just by kill count, but also by distance, accuracy and sheer career importance. Let's take a look at seven of the deadliest snipers in history.

Simo Häyhä is the single most successful sniper in military history! Nicknamed the “White Death” for his totally white camouflage and eerie white mask he wore in combat, the Finnish marksman amassed at least 505 confirmed sniper kills in less than 100 days during the Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union. He recorded an additional 200 kills with a submachine gun. More amazingly, Häyhä recorded all of his sniper kills without using an optic. His Mosin-Nagant rifle was equipped only iron sights. That man is one of the most effective humans I have ever heard of, think about it- at least 700 confirmed kills in less then 100 days means he killed more than that, all with no scopes..... That man was a juggernaut, a 1 man calamity of death, I mean holy shit that is mastery!

The picture of a man with a white mask is not Häyhä. It is not confirmed he ever used one. But he did freeze his shooting positions for the next day in the night before, so snow wouldn't whirl and give away his position. He also kept snow in his mouth so there would be no vapor while exhaling.

A true sniper will master iron sights as well as a scope. That is extremely impressive. The actual shot is just one small aspect of being a good sniper. My boss when I was younger was a Marine sniper in the Korean War. He told me a story where him and an enemy sniper had each other pinned down. He patiently waited for 3 days. He said when the sun was rising on the third day he saw the enemy stick his head out for a quick look. He took him out with a head shot. It takes a special person to wait and stay still for 3 days.

A soviet platoon was marching through Finland when they suddenly hear a voice yelling over a hill "one Finn is stronger than ten russians!". The commissar took offense to that and sent ten soldiers over the hill. Some gunfire could be heard and then the same voice yells "one finn is stronger than 100 Russians!". The commissar gets angry and sends 100 men over the hill. Gunfire and explosions can be heard and soon a voice is heard. "One finn is stronger than a 1000 Russians!". Now furious, the commissar sends 1000 men over the hill. Machine gun fire, rockets and artillery is heard for several minutes then a new voice, clearly belonging to a dying soldier, can be heard. "Don't send more men! It's a trap. There's two of them!". Based on a true story.

Sorry to tell you, but this is an old joke about King Edward chasing after Scots. After sending one, then ten, then a hundred, then half the army, one staggers back around the rock saying " No more men. Go back! It's a trap! There's two of them."

Pasi J.Karelian Isthmus and Western Karelia. As a result of the loss of the Karelian Isthmus, Finland lost the existing defense system and began to build reinforcements along the line of the new border (the Salpa Line) at an accelerated pace, thereby pushing the border from Leningrad from 18 to 150 km. Part of Lapland (Old Salla). Part of the peninsulas Fisherman and Middle (the area of Petsamo (Pechenga), occupied by the Red Army during the war, was returned to Finland) [129]. Islands in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland (Gogland Island). Rent of the Hanko Peninsula (Gangut) for 30 years. In total, according to the results of the Soviet-Finnish war, the Soviet Union acquired about 40,000 km2 of Finnish territories [130]. These territories Finland again took in 1941, in the early stages of the Great Patriotic War, and in 1944 they again moved to the USSR (see Soviet-Finnish War (1941-1944)).Is this your victory? Fins, you are pathetic, you simply have nothing to be proud of, and you are trying to make your loss as a victory. And your land, but now belongs to Russia.

To add something to Simo Häyhäs story. He used his own Mosin Nagant M28 or M28/30 rifle. With only iron sights.
@Echo30Mike
@Echo30Mike 5 жыл бұрын
I'll correct you, he never used an iron sight as it presented a larger profile to his enemies, he used an " artillery sight ", it made him about 1/2 inch smaller. He also used to pack snow into his mouth so that when he exhaled, no vapour breaths to give his position away. He also created a small wall with a few inches in the middle for his arc of fire, he'd always keep his muzzle well behind the wall to limit the enemy seeing his muzzle flash. Most of his kills were at 100m or less, a scope would of made his profile to the enemy about 3 inch bigger, + it would fog-up. The rifle was a Finnish variant of the Mosin-Nagant. The Russian hated him that much, they sent sniper after sniper to get him. They failed. They sent barrage after barrage of artillery shells into the forest he made home, they failed, they carpet bombed the forest, that never flushed him out. In the end, the Russians said " sod this forest, we'll just go around it ". He also knew the forest like the back of his hand because it was essentially his neighbourhood. He'd shoot once, then move. Some would argue about calling him a sniper due to the range he picked his targets off, but there is no mistaking his accolade of deadliest marksman in history.

I really think you guys should have given some props to Craig Harrison. Not only for the furthest confirmed sniper kill ( which, honestly, would make him one of the most deadly, for being able to kill someone @ 2475m... twice), he also used, in what some would call the best sniper system ever created ( so far ), the L96A1.. OR the AWSM.
@Echo30Mike
@Echo30Mike 5 жыл бұрын
And the maximum range of his rifle and the lack of " windage " on his scope. Using a 50 cal would of made it a lot easier, but you know the British MOD way of thinking - " hey guys, we need this to do this job, we want a Barrett .50 cal ".... 10 years later, " errrm, that .50 cal you wanted, its not gonna happen, but we've got this " ,...… " errm well can we have it? " ….. " errm, no, we need to field test it for suitability before we roll it out " - been there seen it and done it. By the time we get what was promised, we've left the job an taken a posting to 1 civ division. The poor bastard that now stands in our place is probably getting the kit we've asked for, 15 years ago.

Carlos Hathcock was a U.S. Marine, and the "round through the scope" only happened once--and that by the luck of not only seeing the glint of the scope, but the old Soviet PU scope was a pretty simple piece of optics. Hardly half the size of your average sniper scope, it's questionable whether a modern 10x sniper scope with all the internals, would've been pierced. His shot at something like 2500yds was equally impressive for his use of the M2HB .50 caliber machine gun, which resulted in the eventual development of sniper rifles capable of handling the big .50 rnd.

I notice there's no mention of Matthäus Hetzenauer and his 345 confirmed kills, or Jösef "Sepp" Allerberger's 257 confirmed kills. Both men did their best to thin out the Soviet hordes. Hetzenauer made his kills from July 1944-May 1945, less than a year, (especially when you account for leave time and recuperation after being wounded by shell fragments.)

Carlos Hatchcock was the greatest sniper ever IMO. Not only did he have 93 confirmed kills, but he also had 300-400 unconfirmed. He also took out a general by himself after crawling for 3 days into enemy territory and was able to get away undetected despite thousands of Vietnamese soldiers being around him. After returning from Vietnam his first time he was in the process of training for the Olympics when he got told he'd be heading back over again. At the time he had already won the 1,000m championship prior to deploying to Vietnam and had beaten out hundreds of the world's top shooters. On top of that he could have easily been awarded a silver star or possibly medal of honor because he saved 7 different men in his vehicle that got blown up by an ambush by throwing them out of the burning vehicle and going in for more. By doing this he suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns over the majority of his body.

Francis Pegahmagowbow, Corporal (final rank Sergeant Major), Canadian Expeditionary Force, World War One. Final confirmed kill tally was 378. Credited with capturing some 300 more. An aboriginal Ojibway from the Parry Sound a, he received the British Military Medal with two Bars. There is speculation that he would have received the DCM or VC had he not been First Nations.

I read somwere that in recent years, historians have concluded that it was not as many as 705(505 with his rifle, 200 with a submachin gun) but still in the hundreds and he did it in less then 100 days and he got wounded on march 6, 1940, Simo was hit by an explosive bullet in his lower left jaw but he survived. Its hard to get reliable numbers how many enemys he acctualy killed during the Winter war the Finns had observers along the front line counting the enemys Simo and fellow snipers shot so you cant say if more then one observer counted same soviet enemy getting hit......and did the enemy die, get injured or just fall? And then you have propaganda, Propaganda is a great tool to raise the morale of the soldiers and civilians and is used in all conflicts/wars.

William Edward Sing, DCM (3 March 1886 - 19 May 1943) was an Australian soldier of Chinese and English descent who served in the Australian Imperial Force during World War I, best known as a sniper during the Gallipoli Campaign.[1][2][3][4][a] He took at least 150 confirmed kills during that campaign, and may have had over 200 kills in total.[3][4] However, contemporary evidence puts his tally at close to 300 kills.[5] Towards the end of the war, Sing married a Scottish woman, but the relationship did not last long.[2] Following work in sheep farming and gold mining, he died in relative poverty and obscurity in Brisbane during World War II.[2][6] .300 kills i think this is one you all forgot and aussie
