In this video I go over some tips on frag system design that I picked up over the years coral farming at Tidal Gardens. Hopefully these tips are helpful regardless of what stage you are in propagating corals whether it is a small frag tank or a full blown commercial facility.

And another question: with your idea of cleaning 1 tank per month, how do you feel about letting the tank mature / beneficial colonies establish in a frag tank. There's one theory that acros would start holding their color at 4 month mark and get to their true potential in 12 months of the tank stabilizing (obviously anecdotal). Cleaning the tank gives you a reset - are you comfortable putting your frags into the system that has not yet balanced itself out in terms of microorganisms and bacteria?

Hi Than! You uploaded this at a very good time, I'll be attending my first frag swap this afternoon and now I have a new topic that I can chat about. One unrelated question, I'm fortunate enough to live near a coral farm and it would be a dream to work there. As a veteran reef keeper and business owner, what qualities do you look for in an employee in this field, and what would set them apart from the pack?

Really good Info about frag tanks,but what about the system on them? (especially filtration) saw closeloop for circulation and insump system for surface skimming. What about skimmers? Dont you use any and just do water changes?
@thepassionreef
@thepassionreef 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent information and thanks for sharing the wisdom Than. One small question keeping in mind the fragtank is 16” high and lights are at 22” above the surface of water what do you think should be the ideal height of the frag racks to maximize space for growing out coral colonies and be able to place frags on the racks. At 11.41 in your video I see you have some frag racks which are very close to the bottom surface of the tank. I have been thinking about this idea but the only concern would be detritus build up underneath? Thanks.
@tidalgardens
@tidalgardens 3 жыл бұрын
I like the frag racks to be just tall enough for fish to swim underneath. I think the latest design has the legs at 1.5" tall.

Love your channel. Great job on the design considerations. Yhe two issues I wonder about with your new setup: 1. The tanks seem really far off the ground. Do workers need ladders to get to the far reaches of the tank? 2. What's with the wheels? I would never do that. First is the expense, second after sitting in one spot for perhaps years, they might not work and thirdly, if you ever did have an earthquake (don't say never, they happen everywhere) you'd have a real destruction derby on your hands.

No no no... those leveling casters are worth their weight in gold. They are solid blocks of aluminum and can each hold something like 2200 lbs once they are set in place. They made all their money in the ease of moving the tanks into place once and leveling without shims.

Thanks for all the knowledge and tips your constantly sharing. As far as the last one, the hard reset/rotating tanks. What supplies should be on hand to ensure the transition doesn't have any issues? I'm doing something of the sort, but instead of swapping back and forth I've been upgrading my tanks every 9-18 months(space was main issue). However, I didn't have alot of rock in my first tanks because my "frag system/tanks" only become such because of a tank shut down due to pest issues. With that said, I've tried to have biomedia to transfer as well as some help from Microbacter 7, but didn't know if there was something else I could be doing, and have also wondered if these resets have kept things from really taking off because once the tank has matured, its being restarted. Again thanks for the video and any answers you can help with

Thanks for sharing your very helpful tips! My question is, Will those wheels on the stand get corroded over time and make it difficult or even impossible for you to move it around later on?
@tidalgardens
@tidalgardens 3 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but then it is no different than a regular stand. The leveling casters made their money just getting the tanks into place and then leveling the tanks perfectly.

Basic question. Once you have a frag tank up and running and you introduce a frag, how long does a frag stay in the frag tank before needing to be moved to a standard reef tank? Is there a time frame or not?

I haven't used them personally. The ones I've seen don't have glass, but plexiglass which gets really scuffed over time like acrylic. I imagine you could build something with glass though.

Hey! Was watching the video...just yesterday night I saw a nudibranch that looked like the one you put in the video. It was wandering on a rock...underneath a seriatopora...didn’t seem interest in corals, I didn’t know if it was good or bad and watched it for like 10 min... it was like exploring but far far away from all montiporas. Should I be concerned? (Love your videos)

I have seen some nice looking “all in one” frag tanks available for sale. Do you have any experience with these? I am wondering if it is realistic to use one as compared to a frag tank with a traditional sump or refugium. I understand that the all in ones may pose some headaches for maintenance or additional accessories, but do you think it’s doable? Or is there something I am missing that may cause me to not be successful long term? I am wanting to return to the saltwater hobby after about 10 years away from it. I am mainly looking to grow beautiful corals, and trade or sell them for new corals to expand the collection. I would also have a small amount of fish, a cleanup crew, and some interesting inverts. Any advice you could offer would be appreciated! Thank you.

Hello! Tell me please, is it possible to make an aquarium with a bottom with a slope to the front side of 15-20 degrees? So after all, it will probably be easier to serve. All the garbage will fly down and it remains only to hold the siphon along the edge.

The Japanese brand ADA only makes glass tanks (Prob the biggest freshwater aquarium brand in Japan)
@johnVidBozo
@johnVidBozo 3 жыл бұрын
That's true. I believe they are all rimless. Rimless is practically impossible with acrylic so glass is the only option. Also ADA is all about the DESIGN. These tanks are made to look good. Not really the market for a working frag tank. Getting close to 'function following form'.

@@johnVidBozo i'm refering to the "glass can't handle quackes"
@johnVidBozo
@johnVidBozo 3 жыл бұрын
@@ParteVerdeA I'm guessing you meant quakes unless you keep ducks in your tanks! :) I live in an earthquake area (Bay area, California). Two big issues with tanks and the ground shaking: 1. Water sloshing out. Not a huge problem but if you have hardwood floors it could be bad. Eurobraced do much better than rimless. 2. Tank falling off stand. There is a KZfaq vid out there showing just how it happens. Securing the stand to the wall helps lots. I suppose a large enough quake could break glass tanks but by then having a standing house would also be an issue. I personally like acrylic for larger tanks. Much easier to move and so much clearer. I've not had a problem with scratching. Some of my acrylic tanks are 20+ years old. I like glass for smaller tanks, 40g or less. Much cheaper, can be a bit more aggressive cleaning.
