Great to see some electronic albums in a "punk" video. The only thing more punk than not being able to play a guitar is not being able to play a keyboard.

For me the top ten would include the U.K. Subs, Stiff Little Fingers, Penetration, 999, X Ray Spex, The Ruts and the greatest punk band of them all Wayne County and the Electric Chairs. If you want to hear some contemporary punk that takes you back to 1977 try the U.K. bands Knock Off and Gimp Fist, they are proper punk bands.

Hey Richie. Thank you for showing some love for Sods and their "Minutes To Go" album. Sods are from my country, Denmark 🇩🇰 🙂. They did three albums (I believe) under the Sods moniker before changing their name to Sort Sol, Danish for Black Sun, which is an expression we use when birds gather in the autumn to head south for warmer weather. You see them fly together, moving in waves almost. When they move around in front of the sunlight, we call it Sort Sol. Take care / Jacob.

I love your list, you have quite an eclectic collection. I was a Stooge, MC5,Dolls pre punk junkie living in New York and eager to hear more similar sounds. The fan magazine N.Y. Rocker ran a photo of a new band with Johnny Thunders, Jerry Nolan and Richard Hell called the Heartbreakers, that was the start of punk for me (keep in mind it was the Heartbreakers going to London that started the punk scene there sadly also the herion drug use. I already was hip to The Dictators first LP (Killer punk Anthems). I went regularly to CBGB and Max's and saw many bands on your list. Thanks for mentioning Wire, Cramps, Pere Ubu, Mink DeVille, Contortions, DMZ ,Dead Boys and The Heartbreakers. I agree with most but some were too soft for my taste even though I had purchased most on your list I collected mostly 45's and EP's in 1976-77 and was happy to see The Saints EP on your list you could have included their first LP. Thanks for the memories and Rock On!

Hi Richie, a great list as expected from the Punk Guru. One regret of mine was not seeing the Cramps or PIL live, but I saw most of the UK punk bands - The Damned were one of the best. I saw Talking Heads live twice, fantastic! Also The Banshees and The Cure together one night and Robert Smith played for both bands - Siouxsie smashed a guy in front of me on the head with the mic for spitting. The Stranglers were also superb live and still are great today. I saw The B52's when they first came to London - brilliant! I would put The Residents as punk as they pissed off a lot of people with their early stuff :) Their Commercial Album is genius. Ramones at number 1, yes. Never saw them live either :( Cheers, Paul

Great list! Nice expansive view of punk. I largely concur, and own about 95% of those in my collection. I'm a cd collector tho, so probably a total philistine to those in the vc. Never really cared much for Madness, but I'll give them another look. Wasn't aware of the Consumers or the Sods, have to check them out too. Was surprised you didn't list Gang Of Four's "Entertainment" or The Adverts "Crossing The Red Sea...", both are crucial IMO. Also, how about MX-80's "Hard Attack", Simply Saucer's "Cyborgs Revisited", The Outsiders' "Close Up", Graham Parker's "Howlin' Wind", or The Suicide Commandos' "Make A Record"? Or maybe ATV's "The Image Has Cracked" and The Pop Group's "Y"? Also I'd definitely include something by The Only Ones and The Fall as well. Wish they would reissue that Plugz album, it's really underrated.

@@vinylrichie007 Oh yeah, The Ruts are definitely essential too! Some of the most tensely explosive stuff from the UK scene, it's a shame their run was so tragically cut short. The Fall are the epitome of an acquired taste, and the size of their discog is really intimidating, but they are well worth the effort i think. Mark E. Smith had a highly singular vision and unique aesthetic. "Witch Trials" is a good place to start, or maybe the "Early Fall 77-79" comp of early singles.

Loads of classics here Richie in this feature length; Here Come the Warm Jets, Raincoats, Modern Dance, Suicide, 77, Are We Not Men (that's the European cover I have), Pink Flag and obviously Unknown Pleasures would be my highlights. Obviously rankings are down to preference. I think stuff like the Specials was indeed seen as part of punk in the UK in some way because ska/2-tone was also part of the youth culture of the time.

Excellent, Richie. I remember that the Ramones early tour included San Francisco. They were only playing small little clubs. No one knew of them. They played a few shows at a small dive in North Beach which a friend of mine went to. Those shows were legendary and really helped spawn the SF punk scene. Great list VR. A lot of those records I have too.Loved the original NY CBGB’s bands ( Television, Patti, Ramones, Hell, etc) but struggled with the no wave stuff. I saw Contortions in Philly once , and luckily avoided James Chance wrath. They played a few songs, mayhem happened and that was it. My older bandmates and I took a train from Delaware to NY to see Sid Vicious at the 3rd night at Max’s Kansas City. As a teen and one of my first trips to NY I anxiously/enthusiastically overdid it pre-show pills and booze wise and puked at our table at the packed Max’s halfway through.Punk rock and I’m sure Sid approved but a rookie move on my part. His backup band was Arthur Kane, Jerry Nolan( Dolls -rhythm section) and Steve Dior( Thunders-like). They were great though I wish I remembered more. Spent the night sleeping it off at the train station as we missed the last train back. Young and dumb me for sure.
