Video description: An interceptor aircraft is a type of fighter aircraft designed specifically for the defensive interception role against an attacking enemy aircraft, particularly bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. There are two general classes of interceptor: some Light fighters, designed for high performance over short range, and; some heavy fighters, which are intended to operate over longer ranges, in contested airspace and adverse meteorological conditions. While the second type was exemplified, historically, by specialized night fighter and all-weather interceptor designs are, the integration of mid-air refueling, satellite navigation, on-board radar and beyond visual range (BVR) missile systems since the 1960s, has allowed most frontline fighter designs to fill the roles once reserved for specialised night/all-weather fighters. Through the 1960s and 1970s, the rapid improvements in design led to most air-superiority and multirole fighters, such as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat and McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, having the performance to take on the point defense interception role, and the strategic threat moved from bombers to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Dedicated interceptor designs became rare, with the only widely used examples designed after the 1960s being the Tornado F3, Mikoyan MiG-25 "Foxbat", Mikoyan MiG-31 "Foxhound", and the Shenyang J-8 "Finback".

When the F-4 Phantom came into service for the Navy and Marines in 1961, it was strictly a fighter interceptor, as the war in Vietnam progressed, the F-4 worked its way into a multi role aircraft to meet the many needs of the military.

@@robertboyes2505 eh, no. When the F4 Phantom entered service it was seen as an air superiority fighter. While the full multi-role view of the aircraft came later, by the time it entered service it was tagged as an air superiority weapon. @@FrancisJoa Not exactly true. Pure interceptors are tasked with engaging long-range bombers mostly from beyond visual range distances. Since such bombers are not very maneuverable, interceptors are not very maneuverable either and focus on carried missiles, strong radars, climb rate, and service ceiling. They mostly carry long-range AA missiles. Air superiority fighters can engage any types of aircraft including other fighters. They can perform dogfights and as such must be highly maneuverable. They carry mostly medium and short range missiles. Pure interceptors are usually significantly larger in size than air superiority fighters. However, the current trend is to design multirole fighters that can perform all that plus ground attack. That's far more cost effective than having multiple types of specialized aircraft.
@downix
@downix 3 жыл бұрын
@@HereNowOOO - That is the argument. However, multirole fighters are proving to be problematic, costing more per plane, requiring more maintenance, and performing worse than the specialized planes they replace. Consider the F-35, which costs more than all aircraft it replaces, combined, while simultaneously not filling any of the roles needed save one well.

F-14 Tomcat was a fighter/interceptor combination. It was not a dedicated interceptor like the others since it could dogfight exceptionally well. It could out-turn much smaller and lighter fighters and had an incredible turn rate. Also, it had a bubble canopy with full 360 degree view as well as maneuvering slats/flaps gave it incredible maneuverability for its size.

@2ZZGE100
@2ZZGE100 3 жыл бұрын
@@beornthebear.8220 Yes, it was designed to take out the enemy and assert air superiority no matter what the scenario. A lot of it was because of the Vietnam lessons where the MIG-17 and MIG-21s would use smart tactics to evade radar and get close to the F-4s and could easily kill the Phantoms in dogfights. That is also why F-111 was scrapped and F-14 was born.
@beornthebear.8220
@beornthebear.8220 3 жыл бұрын
@@2ZZGE100 There was also a saying about the F-4, it proves one could fly a brick with enough power. The point they made is all the corrections needed to make it fly; bent wings and such. After learning how much more nimble the smaller fighters were, the F-5 were made because they were light and maneuverable. The F-14 was designed to handle that hard while carrying a load of air-to-air missiles, both radar tracking and heat-seeking.
@2ZZGE100
@2ZZGE100 3 жыл бұрын
@@beornthebear.8220 That is correct. I have heard that a lot about the F-4 Phantom that it was horrible aerodynamically. It could fly very fast, but those small wings and a very high drag airframe really made it difficult to manage energy and sustain G in the turn and also climb vertically. When F-14 came out, there was criticism as to why it cost so much more than the F-4 so Navy did exercises of ACM between F-4J and F-14. The F-14 would win every time even going from fully defensive to fully offensive in just 15 seconds against the F-4J that even had maneuvering flaps.

@beornthebear.8220 3 жыл бұрын
@@2ZZGE100 Yes, that's why they flew high and tried to dive toward the Migs. Nose-to-nose, the F-4s maneuverability was outclassed. And, of course, any hard turn would deplete the energy gained by diving, The F-14v was designed to handle very hard.

The Lightning had an afterburner malfunction and still reached 20 000ft in 102 seconds, before peaking at 66 000ft. In November 2006, at the Overberg air show Dave Stock took the Lightning to 6 000m in less than 70 seconds, setting a new All Africa record.

Correction on your technical facts. The Mig-25 heavily used Titanium and not stainless Steel. Aircraft do not use steel as it is too heavy. Aircraft use alloys of Aluminum and military fighters will employ Titanium for its strength and light weight properties. Also Titanium has a high melting point and was the primary metal used in the SR-71 for that reason.

Till today ZaslonAM is most powerfull radar ever put in any plane...so yes F14 was great plane, i love it and its my favorite plane of all time, but MiG 31 as interceptor is far superior then mighty tomcat...
@questofknowledge8788
@questofknowledge8788 3 жыл бұрын
@@galicije83 Worth pointing out that the 14 had data link, and entered service 7 years before the 31. The controls for datalink was next to the rwr control panel to the right. As per the missiles the r33 is believed (without inside sources) to reach speeds of mach 3-5 depending on launch parameters, about the same for the aim54. By 1999 the aim54 could reach out to around 190 km while the r33 was at 160 km. The odds of either missile hitting at this range is astronomically low though. This means that the actual useful range was sub 100 km at this point. The missiles themselves are very similar, meaning it is kinda a tossup today. As per radar the two radar are actually similar in terms of performance. The differences are in the type of radar with the 14 being pulse doplar, and the 31 being magnetically scanned. That said the f14 had the advantage of at 50miles being able to target and engage 6 targets simultaneously, with the 31 at 50km (slightly shorter range) only having the ability to track and engage 4 targets. This is a simple breakdown, but I figured it would make the point about the onboard systems, the f14 was never taken out of service because of poor performance, but budget cuts. The mig 31 is still an amazing aircraft, however it competes at best peer to peer with the 14. This also doesn’t bring up the bombcat nickname (and what it entitles) or the multitude of other roles each aircraft preformed/preforms in.

@@kevinvojta692 And once more, how do you confirm this number, and how could it be used? While an impressive weapon, the point of my above post was to show that they are very similar in terms of performance. There were more upgrades planned for the 14, and who is to say that they couldn’t carry a similar missile if the us ever adopted one. Also keep in mind that you could also shoot down missiles with the Phoenix if required.

As someone who served in the airforce, what these armchair critics fail to mention is aircraft serviceability and its external fit / configuration. You can have the best aircraft in the world, but if it’s unserviceable and requires 100s of maintenance hours per flying hour... then it’s doing nothing on the ground. Secondly, place large external fuel tanks on an aircraft like the Tornado F3 then you really limit the manoeuvrability and it’s quoted top speed is unachievable

You forgot three dedicated interceptors on your best of list: The F101B Voodoo, the TU-28 Fiddler and the F106 Delta Dart. The F101B was a 2-seat, long-range supersonic interceptor that served primarily with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) for decades into the 1980s. The Soviet TU-28 Fiddler was another long range supersonic interceptor, and the best and fastest of the three was the F106 Delta Dart which could fly at mach 2.3 and served with the USAF into the 1980s. A for effort but only a C for research. You need to revise and expand this list to top ten at least.

Seeing the inclusion of some multi-role fighters, I should have included the Su-27. With all the love I have for Soviet planes, I'd still put the F-14 above all other mentioned aircraft. It has greater maneuverability than the MiG-31, and more varied missiles (for different ranges, long, mid, and short). It would be up there with the Su-27... and that's saying much, as the F-14 is 12 years older than the Su-27.

@@thefrecklepuny Sort of. Though the F-14 was originally intended to be a long range interceptor for the US Navy. Like the Mig-25 and 31 it was equipped with a long range radar and very long range missles for use against enemy bombers who would potentially attack the fleet. Only later was it optimized for other tasks. While initially intending for the F-4 as an interceptor, it went through its transformation in a much shorter time period than the F-14 did.
