One of the easiest pieces of workout equipment to get and use is dumbbells. You can use them at home or at the gym! That is why I am going to give you the top 8 dumbbell exercises for older men. Older men can typically lack mobility in the knees and ankles, and can struggle with balance and stability. Some of these exercises are going to push your limits, and make you step up to get more results. Let’s get started with these top 8 dumbbell exercises for older men.
Exercise #1: ALTERNATING REVERSE LUNGES. Not only is this working your hamstrings and core, but it also works your stability and balance which is key as you get older. If you have good enough balance, alternate when doing this exercise. If you have really bad balance, do one leg at a time until you are able to alternate each rep.
Exercise #2: RDL (ROMANIAN DEADLIFT). Hinge at the hips with a slight bend in your knees, and you are going to ride the dumbbells down your legs. This is a smaller movement where you ride the dumbbells down just below your knees, ride the dumbbells back up and squeeze your glutes at the top of the movement.
Exercise #3: INCLINE PRESS. Rotate the dumbbells in slightly, and bring the dumbbells down and out. This will help protect your joints when you rotate the dumbbells slightly inward. When you bring the dumbbells out, it will help you get a deeper stretch in your chest.
Exercise #4: DUMBBELL BACK ROW. When doing this exercise, make sure to initiate the movement at the elbow. You are drawing the elbow back behind your body, getting a nice contraction, and bringing it back down nice and slow.
Exercise #5: DUMBBELL SHOULDER PRESS. You can do this seated or standing, but if you have back issues I recommend doing this seated. Keep your core tight throughout this exercise. Rotate the dumbbell slightly inward to have a more natural rotation in your shoulders.
Exercise #6: ALTERNATING BICEP CURLS. Keep your chest out and your shoulders back. Rotate the dumbbells slightly inward as you bring the dumbbells up to your chest. Use slow and controlled movements to make sure you are using only your biceps and not using momentum to get the dumbbells up.
Exercise #7: DUMBBELL SKULLCRUSHERS. Use a flat bench for this exercise, and start the movement with the dumbbells slightly behind your head. That will help keep tension in your triceps throughout the whole movement of the exercise.
Exercise #8: SUITCASE CARRY. Make sure your shoulders stay square, do not let the dumbbell pull your shoulder down. Keep your core tight, and you are just going to walk.
Alright guys, that wraps up this video tutorial with the top 8 dumbbell exercises for older men. Make sure to subscribe to our channel for more videos on how to build muscle and get back in shape at home or at the gym.

For Gary: I like your presentations targeted to older men, especially those using dumbbells. I have a suggestion, which could be a benefit for your organization and particularly for your viewers. I don't see any sites that produce exercise instructions that you can PRINT at home. After a dozen or so assorted exercises, you can easily miss an exercise or an important point in the proper execution. You see some brief sketches on gym equipment, for example, but there's usually more to it than that (weight recommendation, body positions, stance, front and side views of posture, # of reps, and so forth). I'd like to be able to print your specific instructions for every exercise so I don't miss any. The drawings wouldn't cost that much, but an exercise chart is worth a thousand words.

Please keep these videos coming in I’m 61 years old now and my legs are very week now / when I was in my prime I used to leg press 600 lbs in my reps with no problem I didn’t think anything about it, then a body builder came over and said €%^# I can’t even do that much in reps , we went to high school together 1979. Now I tried before the gym closed up and my rep included 175 lbs but could have went a little heavier but for safety reasons no need to push , I give up on the gym opening back up there are others but my wood shop in the back yard is doing fine but don’t have much to work with.

Very helpful, thanks. I’m 60. I stopped going to the gym due to COVID and finally gave up on waiting bought some equipment (dumbbells bench, aerobic machine), and am a few weeks in to getting started again. I’d like some coaching on rest and recovery times and how to design a split schedule accordingly. When going to the gym, I did a three-day rotation, fourth day of rest. Day 1: chest and triceps, Day 2: Back and biceps, Day 3: legs and shoulders. I would do some core work each day. Any suggestions to improve that plan? Related to that is number of exercises per muscle group, number of sets of each, and number of reps per set. I typically do a light weight warmup set of 12 reps focusing on form, then heavier for three sets of 8-10, with goal of approaching failure ( it not getting TO failure and risking injury) by last rep of last set. I’d do two exercises per major muscle, such as RDLs and goblet squats for legs, or alternating curls and concentration curls for biceps. Some general guidelines and suggestions about number of sets and reps per set, as well as how often and how to change up the pattern, would be very, very helpful. Thanks again.

Great workout and I'm glad you're including Romanian deadlifts unlike your buddy on the same site who doesn't seem to like them at all because I truly believe they're essential to really hit the lower back and hamstrings more than what any squat or lunge variation does but if people don't really have the balance or ability to do goblet squats if they're older like you said than they're never gonna be able to do reverse lounges or even split squats because their balance won't be there so for older people in particular or anyone but especially older people and older people new to working out I would definitely recommend goblet squats and Romanian deadlifts that comprise of your 2 lower body exercises personally because you don't really need super amazing balance for either one of them exercises at all compared to any form of lunches where your feet aren't planted evenly or firmly but nonetheless great workout and I admire what you guys do because people need help and encouragement regarding exercising for sure!
