I have an 07 (4th gen) which is essentially the exact same. Minus some weight (5th gens are 500lbs heavier), dual vvti (same v6 but it's single. However, 4th gens are quickest gen), 2wd only. But that's ok. (only 4th gens so far, are capable of full time 4hi as long as center isn't locked. Regardless of trim. V8 version are full time regardless) Anyway, I currently have 162k on mine. In the 6yrs I've owned it (purchased with 112k) most expensive maintenance item I needed to do so far, was my tires. These things are tanks. They cannot be beat in their durability or reliability outside of its own brand. Who gives a shit if it doesn't massage your balls as you wait for a tow truck? Or other flash are dash bullshit that doesn't really benefit you in any way? Especially in regards to offroading. Most versatile SUV imo. Lift em, slam em, overland, full blown off-road setup, can't go wrong if it's done right. Only qualm with mine, is paint isn't so good now (though it's rust free cus original to AZ). But it's combo my own laziness and our climate. Other than that, no worries at all. No worries of breaking down for no reason, no constant shop visits. No bullshit electrical problems (EVERYTHING works), no engine/trans issues. Shits solid. Yeah doesn't get the greatest mpg, doesn't drive like a car (because it isn't a crossover) not as techy (again it doesn't matter much. Can always add what you want later, if you have the money to do so). They're just simply unbearable by anything on American soil, for what they are (again outside its own brand.). People argue all the time how new bronco will knock the 4runner off it's high horse, lol, they're delusional as all hell. *taking their new bronco to the shop for the 50th time* "haha take that 4runner owners....😭"

I bought a 2013 4runner brand new and its been nothing but the best. Super reliable and living in NY I have no worries about snow driving and lousy roads. I'd rather have a tank over a scooter

We have a 18 ES 350. We only have 40K miles, but it replaced our 04 Camry with 270K miles. When our Rav with the 3.5 V6, 4WD wears out, we plan on replacing it with the RX AWD hybrid.

I have 2004 Lexus RX 330 with 210K miles now and still running. i changed timing belt one time. Still in good shape. change your engine oil every 5K miles my advice.

I had two chevy vans an 86 and 93. Both had multiple problems. I call it built in obsolescence. Now I drive a 07 Toyota Sienna with 107,000 miles . A great car.

Suburbans have good reputation for longevity....but they are definitely NOT "mid-size" LOL....

They’re both based on the Hilux, but the fortuner is more sporty while the 4Runner is more for off roading. I think because the 4Runner is more off roading based, it’ll be built with more durable parts compared to the Fortuner.

If you are not going to take it off road, the Highlander is probably a much better vehicle for you than a 4Runner. The 4Runner is reliable, but fuel economy is poor, the drivetrain is agricultural, the ride and handling are relatively poor, and there isn't much space in the back due to the solid rear axle.

@@M1911jln Your comment is spot on. I was shopping for a vehicle for our weekend trips out of state about a 2.5hr drive. My biggest downfall of the 4 runner was 1. engine i.e. its slow 2. Needed to haul 3 dogs highlander is way bigger cargo and lower for pups and 3. Mpg. Otherwise no gripe with the runner. I do love my highlander tho. And Im a guy that had a lifted 1st gen Tundra on 33s so Im not a family suv guy

@@M1911jln then you would be very surprised how much I can fit in my own 07 4runner. (these came with optional 3rd row, but unlike Highlander, can be completely removed when not being used.) Fuel economy isn't that bad (05 f1shitty I came from was far worse). But the 4runner is in fact, far more versatile and far more reliable than a highlander. Both are great vehicles. (my stepsons g-pa had an 06 limited hybrid he bought new, had for over 10yrs problem free, aside from the dash lightshow he got near the end. Never had it fixed, as it never caused any adverse issues. Was just annoying. He handed it down to his daughter, who quickly destroyed it. Broke the sunroof, rear passenger window (both no longer functioned) destroyed the leather. (she's fucking horrible bro), got into a fender bender. He took it back. Sold to a Gardner for $800. Little worse for wear, but.....shit still ran and drove like it always had. Had over 280k by the time. This was like 7 yrs ago, Gardner STILL has it, and still drives it. Lol.) But it's a truck based SUV so what are people expecting? It's a legitimate SUV, not a crossover. Shit, today, it has no direct competitors. I didn't want to be reduced to a minivan with SUV body. So I got the 4runner. No regrets. 4th gens too, had the V8 as an option (same 4.7 used in land cruiser, tundra, Lexus gx460, sequoia), and are only gen regardless of trim, 4x4 models (mine is a 2wd only with the v6), can be driven in full time 4hi (v8 is full time anyway, v6 can do same as long as center isn't locked). So, they were capable of 2wd (only v6 models) AWD, or 4x4 (when locked and in 4lo). Not to mention standard features were a-trac (I have a 2wd version of that), downhill and uphill assist. Plus a button to turn off the side airbags for off-road situations. As a crossover, you couldn't go wrong with a highlander, or it's competitor the Honda pilot. (explorer needs to fucking be discontinued already. How they fuck they manage to keep selling those literal factory pieces of shit? Just how?) But for what it is, what it's capable of, and how versatile they are, you cannot find anything better on American soil, than a 4runner. Mine is base, I have side airbags front and rear, sunroof, can tow 5k lbs, projector headlights, led tails, 6 disc stereo with aux, fog lights, steering wheel audio controls, 8 way power driver's seat with powered lumber support. (since I bought used, I sadly don't have the 3 tier rear loading set up and tonnue cover). Poor man's back up cam (since it's not 3rd row, or jbl sound system. It has 2 blind spot mirrors in the rear pillers of the cargo area. (third row puts the seatbelt there, and jbl system has tweeters that would go there). They're the fastest gen to date (stock they hit 0-60 in 7 secs), full sized MATCHING spare. I can fit quite a bit in the cargo area with rear seats still up. If item is a little long-ish, just hang it out the rear hatch window, since that goes down all the way. (something Highlander cannot do), or, put that shit up on top, in a cargo basket. (like when we have our 2 dogs who fucking LOVE being back there, especially when the rear window goes down, and they can stick their heads out), so everything goes up on the roof. Plenty of space inside for all of us. And our dogs to be comfortable. Don't know where you got that the Highlander is larger cargo. 3rd row makes it almost non existent when in use, and the 4runner is bigger btw. Not by a whole lot, but it is bigger inside and out.

The systems are the same although a slightly different tune as per Honda themselves and the mdx is tuned for road handling. They are identical if not slight edge to passport off road. Comes down to tires at that point.

I had some breaks warp issues with the first gen Mazda 6 a 2014 loaded. I had a 2018 and those break issues were gone. They experimented with that capacitor battery system during the 2015 and 16 and the batteries were expensive. They dropped that In 2017

That’s unfortunate :/ My 2016 6 has been great with 185,000km with no major issues apart from regular maintenance. Also bought a used 2014 3 which I’ve had for over year now. But then again no brand is perfect

Now driving a 15 YO Acura MDX. In general it has been very reliable. I do agree with comment on wiring problems. In first year front window quit operating. Now 15 years later passenger windows don't operate. But this vehicle has my confidence anytime I hit the road.

@@joniboulware1436 my Acura had wire broken somewhere between the engine bay and the trunk. The rear brake lights did not work and this was only after 3 years old. Car never been in accident. Battery died after 3.5 years. Gas filler door cable worn out about the same time. All the plastic components in the engine bay once taken out the clips broke and rattled right through. Sold the car after 4 years with only 98 kms because it had an oil leak occurring and will be costly to fix since is around head gasket area. Traded the Acura for Lexus. Kept the Lexus for 10 years…not a single issue, all repairs were only tires, brake pads and one single ball joints…unbelievable reliability. So solidly built.

This car Outback Touring is on my list for 2023. Give me your thoughts.

@@Widebody20 I really like the nose of the 23 Outback, except for the cladding that goes from the bumper up into the headlights. If I bought a 23, then I’d have that cladding painted to match the Outback’s exterior color. It makes the Outback look cheap like the non painted bumpers of car’s built with plastic bumpers prior to 1990. We own a 19 Outback and love it, except for the CVT which robs the Gutless 2.5 naturally aspirated engine of horsepower and torque. Driving on our mountain passes with our foot on the floor and the RPMs at 5K and not gaining speed is ridiculous. We have Never got more than 30 mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75 mph. My 11 Rav 4WD Limited with a 3.5 V6 and 269 hp still gets 26mpg on the freeway and 21 mpg combination. I’m not impressed by the performance of the 2.5 at all. Turbo engines won’t last as long as a naturally aspirated engine. We Love the Napa brown leather interior and the Ivory interior on our 19 Outback. The infotainment system on the 20 and newer Outback’s, sucks. We looked at a 20 but decided to buy the 19 because of the confusing infotainment system on the 20. Subaru needs to start building normal geared transmissions. I understand that the CVT is supposed to get better fuel economy, but that’s a Lie. A 10 spd automatic transmission will get better fuel economy than the CVT. It boils down to the fact that a CVT costs less to manufacture. And a CVT won’t last as long as a normal transmission. And only 182 hp from a 2.5 is weak. After our Outback wears out, if Subaru still refuses to go back to a geared transmission and doesn’t provide a non plug in hybrid, we will probably replace our Outback with a Toyota. This is what I think about the 23 Outback

Both have similar reliability reputations overall - which are very good to excellent - it really gets down to the actual year, if you're buying used. I'd recommend CR Auto issue which will give specific reliability records spanning the past ten years.

I have a 2009 MDX top of the line and it hit 306k… we take it to the mountains and birdwatching in southern Alberta Canada. It’s so reliable, it’s disgusting. Haha. I’ll buy nothing but Honda/Toyota.

@@haxecuter1 One thing I really like about Acura is they make a car that drives. If you love to drive and prefer to drive all season; Then, you will not be disappointed with an Acura. Check out most reviewers and they never complain about how an Acura drives. It is always nit-picky stuff like too many buttons, cup holders too small, don't like the dash layout, or backup camera need a higher resolution.

@@jihadnajinaji9529 You need to narrow down which 19 MDX you want between the base, tech, ASpec, adv, fwd, sh-awd, or Sport Hybrid in tech or adv models. I like to always stick with sh-awd because the MDX will handle better, drive like a smaller vehicle, all season traction, you get a donut spare+tools, and only a 1-2 mpg hit. After than, I like the tech package at a minimum or lean towards the Adv model if you like tech like 360 camera, electronic dampers, or ventilated seats. The Aspec is the sporty looking MDX and the Sport Hybrid is the top performance model with the best mpgs. No changes with the 2020 MDX models.
