Thanks guys! We're off on a 4-month "practice trip" next year before we go full-time on the road and we're at the beginning of the planning stage. This is super helpful.

Some great advice, thanks. About to embark on a few trips and agree on your hiking tips. We are in our early sixties and definitely not experienced hikers but have done several so called grade 5 hikes without much issue, take your time, be prepared, and stay within your limits. Just have fun and enjoy life.

Hey Simon & Liz. It was fantastic to meet you both in person at the Brissie Caravan and Camping Supershow yesterday. I really enjoyed the yarn we had and realising that I had correctly guessed your offgrid ‘water saving/extending’ setup in your new caravan. Perhaps one other travel tip along the lines of maintaining flexible travel plans which I think you touched on is wherever possible, learn to really just ‘slow down’ within your mind when travelling rather than rushing to get from one place to another. Understand that for most people, time is a huge factor (work commitments, limited leave etc.) but maybe that could be factored into the travel plans e.g. travel less distance from home and stay longer and relax in a few places. Apart from that, thanks SO much for giving me the inspiration to get out and travel and experience those unforgettable moments with family 👍

Try Red Robin fire pits, they are light weight mesh off the ground and folds up to fit in a small canvas bag the size is extremely compact and mine weighs less than 3kg. I also got the tripod for over the top cooking.

A water-saving tip is to apply shampoo and conditioner before getting the shower and then wash it off. A clothing tip is to pack for 7 days and wash once a week. Have a separate bag of clothes for cold wet weather.

Thanks guys. Just stumbled across your channel. Our house is for sale, we have started selling or storing our furniture, and we are hitting the road in our 15 foot hybrid when it sells. We have no plans, we are empty nesters, so we are just pointing the bullbar north to start with. Thank you for the great information. I will be going through your off grid videos. Regards

Great video. Totally agree with the things you don't need. We've used our side privacy screen only once in 11 months up at Darwin and only because we weren't on an east west site. Ditto tables. We use our smaller one lots but our big bifold has seen the light of day once also. They're staying home next time. We have smaller sized bin bags, and get rid of them often. We hardly ever prebook sites. I dummy book to see prices and availability. If I know we're going to be somewhere that is filling up fast and its the only one with good reviews we'll ring and book but thats only been half a dozen times in 11 months. Its bitten us twice as we had to bypass Mission Beach and Cairns as they were packed. Oh well. Unfortunately we won't be back to our home in Brisbane until well after the Show. Have a fantastic time 😊

Another great video, guys :) We haven't done anywhere near as much caravanning as you guys, but we have spent over 30 years camping in a SMALL tent out of the back of the 4WD. That prepared us for the minimalistic approach - take little, take only what we absolutely need, buy replacements when we run out along the way, be sparing with water, leave no trace, etc - all those things come from that tent background. Just one to add to your tips about rubbish management - when we DO have a campfire, we burn anything that is flammable and non-toxic. So, cardboard, paper etc, obviously. Food scraps. Toilet wee paper. Anything that is combustible but doesn't generate fumes. So no plastics, for example. But we find that about half the volume in our rubbish bags - at least - is combustible. So burn it - it's free fuel! :) Might try to get to the show and catch up.

Sounds good, Pete. Good tips about burning what you can, we tend to do the same. Although we find we don't have fires that often.

Been travelling for years around Australia still working on less clothes yep you only wear a few item and sometimes for days. Totally agree we’ve never bought a winch either but we’ve been bogged max trax or treds perfect recovery gear and know your tyre pressures to drive on in sandy tracks so compressor and tyre pressure gauge is vital..

Another good video. With regards to buy once, cry once, suggest people should buy the best tow vehicle you can afford. So many people start off with a ute and deck it out how they want, then 12 months or so down the track workout that they need to upgrade to a Land cruiser etc with higher GVM, then re-add on the extras they need. It would have been less $ and time if they just went for a Land cruiser or similar in the first place. Understand were you are coming from regarding your style of travel but if you are planning to spend some nights in caravan parks and like to socialise ( Grey nomads) an outside light weight table will be used quite a lot.
@TheLifestylePioneers
@TheLifestylePioneers Жыл бұрын
Thanks. It's always a tricky one with tow vehicles. You make a good point about spending money only to have to upgrade later, though.

Hi Guys, great episode. We certainly learnt the hard way with all the extra "stuff" we took on our 1 yr trek around the country. I have now minimized everything. One good tip if I may, when we were up in the northern part of Oz I stubbled across a really good product for personal repellant and after bite care. The repellant is called Good Riddance and bite care is Midge Magic. Both can be brought online. They are both natural products and I got them because my husband suffers very badly if bitten by midges, and they work. Oh yes we have a portable fireplace and we used it .....mmmmm zero times, its been given the boot 😂😂. Cheers Julia

PLB's are good but, I have heard of some people having to wait up to 5 hours for help to finally be alerted and arrive on site. We carry a sat phone so we can call emergency services directly, especially if you get hit by a snake in a remote location.

Great info Liz and Simon. I learnt pretty quickly as well since living on the road, I do have a wee tip, bit gross but when you do a poo the toilet paper if pulled off in the dotted line segments makes it dissolve quicker in toilet as it’s not a big clump, I’ve found it great. Hope that makes sense. I was really hoping to catch up with you both at the show, but need to be in Toowoomba and can’t make it, another time. All the best at the show. Cheers Judy

Your are so correct with being flexible with plans, I thought it was because I have PTSD from military war service but, it's nice to know it's not just me that has issues with fixed date plans. The weather is a deciding factor to our destinations and plans,...oh and finding water. Do you have portable solar panels for days when your parked in shade?
@TheLifestylePioneers
@TheLifestylePioneers Жыл бұрын
I think most people would fin more flexible plans more relaxing. We don't have portable solar anymore with our new van but we did carry 200w for a bit in the last van. We have a lot more rooftop solar now.

Hi Liz and Simon, regarding flexible travel plans, don't you get a little anxious whether or not there will be a spot to camp, and do you have a plan a,b,c?, having said that we are hoping to go to Tassie in late Jan, and won't be booking much before hand.
@TheLifestylePioneers
@TheLifestylePioneers Жыл бұрын
I think we're kinda used to it now. You'll always find somewhere to camp. It might not be your first choice but we've never been left without somewhere. Enjoy Tassie, it's amazing!

And the Aust govt is so slack at producing internet signal across much of Australia. Leaving it to the private companies to do it is not the answer. And even more slack now there is Starlink for people to spend their money on. As for rubbish, don't buy stuff that is wrapped more than once. If it also has a box as well as a cellophane wrapper or bag, then it is too much. That will eliminate much of the rubbish, reducing it to a few small bags only. The number of people who try to make videos while being eaten alive by flies or insects is amazing. Why would you? And keep the door to the caravan closed all the time, not just sometimes. No point in sometimes, it has to be all the time to be successful. I don't want to do peak season anywhere. But I also hate moving. Yet I want to travel around Australia. I don't even know if I will be successful once I have sold my property. But I do know I probably won't have a house to come back to, unfortunately. I don't know what will happen. Simon already has a head full of thick hair. I would hate to find something like that down the plughole! 😆
