Join John Jens and I for Part 3 of Top Australian Chardonnays. This is a snapshot of Australia's best chardonnays. The world of chardonnay is diverse, exciting and full of new discovery - the grape is incredibly versatile and pliable. The clone, the soil they grow in and the way they are put together is everything. When they are good, they are great - as these are!
The wines we open here (and their approx RRP's) are:
2018 Bindi Quartz, Macedon Ranges VIC RRP $80
2018 Holyman, Tamar, Tasmania RRP $50
2018 By Farr, Geelong VIC RRP $90
2017 Penfolds Yattarna, Tasmania $175
2016 Cullen Kevin John Legacy Series Fruit Day, Margaret River WA RRP $250
2018 Giaconda Estate, Beechworth VIC $175

Any review you see on my socials ( / erinllarkin , this channel and my website (www.erinlarkin.com.au) are never paid for by wineries or anyone else: the wines are featured on their merits - because they have risen to the top in tastings. If you try the wines I recommend and you like them - good! Because so do I.

Wine is of course subjective and yet there is room for a difference of palate between Mr & Mrs Public and well educated professionals. Erin is one of the best assessors of wine I've ever seen. Complex yet clearly understandable and relatable descriptions. Though I'm curious why these magnificent Chardonnays are still deemed 'less than' the leading Grand Crus offerings?

Fantastic presentation, you two! Great line up and brilliantly presented! I've just tasted the 18 Yattarna, and oh my goodness! I look forward to discussing as soon as the embargo lifts on Thursday!

It would want to be preeeeetty good to eclipse this 17 - although I am continually impressed by Yattarna so no surprises. Someone should do a museum release V current vintage retrospective on the Yattarna’s and Bin A’s.... looking forward to seeing your thoughts Thursday 😊

Hi Erin and John, thank you for all 3 of your reviews on Australian Chardonnay, I have worked in cellar doors in the Mornington peninsula for 9 years and am a great fan of Chardonnay. I must say I was disappointed that not one Mornington peninsular chardonnays was included in your reviews. I have always believed that Mornington peninsula produce some of the best in Australia. I have also been accused of having"cellar pallet". I think we all have a bit of "cellar pallet", comparing what we are familiar with to other wines. The wines you have chosen are what I consider super premium Australian wines, they are all going to be good, probably great, and so they should be at that price point. I would be interested in a review featuring everyday wines, the wine you have at home on a Wednesday. This is what most people can relate to. Thank you, I appreciate your wine knowledge and comments.

Thanks very much for watching, and noted. RE Mornington Chardonnay, I agree, it’s a great region for Chardonnay. Mornington will have its day on this channel!

Thanks for bringing us some amazing Chardonnay's. We are blessed to live in a country that is producing not only great Chardonnay but great wines in general. Loving Tassie wines at the moment.

These videos are alost 2 years old now, and really to make the series complete, perhaps we should have looked at each great chardonnay region individually... always good to have plans for the future I would say...!

Great job as always. Nice to see some wines from Victoria slipping in as well. Earlier this year I tasted the 2016 By Farr GC Chardonnay from their closely planted/high-density Cotê vineyard and it blew me away! Definitely worth a look if you can find one. On the lower end, Giant Steps Sexton, both 2018 and 2019, are great wines for $50, and from Beechworth one of the best QPRs of the year was Sentio's 2019 Chardonnay ($43). Stunning wine with incredible verve and minerality for the price.

Thanks very much! And all good points. I haven't had the Cote vineyard chard from By Farr or the Sentio, but thanks for adding them to my ever-growing list! Loved the Giant Steps 19's(preferred Sexton over Primavera by a whisker but thought they were both beautiful). The state of Australian chardonnay is very very good. We could make fifty of these videos and not get to the bottom of it...

Awesome vid guys. I've had my fair share of Legacy 2016 and consider it one of the best Chardonnay's to ever come out of Margaret River. Yattarna really has me interested now, only ever had Penfolds Chardonnay from Adelaide Hills Vineyards and found them a little lean and sometimes even dull, granted I have a soft spot for MR. Going to have to track some down as well as Holyman if I can find it. Actually have 13, 14 KJ Legacy Series and Kevin John that I've been holding for a blind tasting. Maybe I will have to extend that to 16's and make it utterly bank breaking haha.

The 2018 Giaconda was the best Chardonnay I've ever had. A majestic wine that will improve with time and age. For this quality you have to pay in Burgundy about 300 €.

It’s a sensational wine I agree with you. And brilliant value (although not cheap by any stretch) when you compare it to Burgs 👌🏽

@@erinlarkin Unfortunately, far too few very good Australian wines come to us on the European mainland. The focus is on industrial wines and not on the top producers. Often people only speak of the Barossa Valley and few know the wines from Victoria.
@erinlarkin
@erinlarkin 3 жыл бұрын
@@Kris-zr3tj That is a great shame. Keep watching for more recommendations and try and track some down online... you can make up your own mind! As with every wine producing countr/region, the industrial wines have their purpose, but they are often not a represenation of the what the top producers are capable of!

@Erin Larkin. I also think William Downie's Pinot Noirs from the Gippsland are fantastic. Especially the single vineyards like the Manilla or Bull Swamp. I would love to try the Cullen Chardonnays too. Unfortunately it is almost impossible to get the wines in Germany.

Great video! Giaconda is one of my favourite Australian Chardonnay. Tried the earlier Penfolds yattarna found it not to evolve well. While aged Giaconda can be sensational. Manage to get some Cullen Kevin John Legacy 2016 can’t wait to try it. Could you please advise how well this will age compare to Giaconda?
@erinlarkin
@erinlarkin 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew! Thanks for the words. As the Legacy wine is only relatively new for Cullen it’s hard to say. However based on the Kevin John’s proven ability to age I would suggest it will age gracefully and slowly. As to how that will compare to Giaconda...? They are so different in style, clone, region and winemaking it would be a tough comparison, but I’d say the comparison will be fun in ten years?! Try and find an older Kevin John in the meantime and give it a go - that will answer your question re the Legacy. Track down an ‘07!
