Australia is a diverse landscape for sparkling wine production, and in this video I look at wines from just two regions: the Adelaide Hills, in South Australia, and Tasmania. These are two of the premier regions in Australia for sparkling, due to their cool climates, but yield very different styles of wine. Here, I discuss a span of wines, from high-quality boutique, widely available value sparkling, and a newbie from GH Mum Tasmania.

Any review you see from me (on my socials ( / erinllarkin , this channel, my website (www.erinlarkin.com.au) and anywhere else) are never paid for by wineries or anyone else: the wines are featured on their merits - because they have risen to the top in tastings. If you try the wines I recommend and you like them - good! Because so do I.

Hey Erin! I took up wine collecting because I was told there would be no math. All those numbers make me feel like I just gave birth to an accountant...but seriously. I think I need to upgrade my stemware game because tonight I am drinking Louis Bouillot (a favorite mid-week quaffer) from crystal flutes (even though living in California for three years and seeing all those warning labels about lead crystal still hasn't put me off). It is going down nicely as part of the ritual of putting up the Christmas Tree. I believe the best champagnes come from Tassie as I grew up reading about the research of Dr Andrew Pirie. While NVs claim to be representative of the house style, my wife and I have seen examples of a complete orbit around what we are used to in a certain house style. Over the years I have come to settle on the complexity of Bollinger, but only last week I was impressed by the Ruinart Blanc de Blancs. Have not been impressed by Arras at any level, but am certainly willing to try the others in exciting new stemware. Cheers!

Haha. Sparkling is all about numbers... it's what makes it all tick - what makes it all make sense. I agree, Bollinger and Ruinart are two superb houses, I also buy both each year. In my opinion, the evolution of Tasmania is as exciting as the evolution of English sparkling - they're both bursting from the gates with potential and definition. Looking forward to seeing where they both go in time.

Great video Erin. So great to see Australian premium sparkling getting the attention it deserves. Im thinking about getting a nice bottle or two of Aus sparkling to drink with friends at Christmas and am thinking either the 2006 or 2007 Arras EJ late disgorged (on sale for 190 and 199) or something else super special around that price. Would love your thoughts! So many good producers in Tassie. You could definitely do an episode covering the top stuff - Apogee was a revelation to me last time I was down there, Bellebonne, too many others to name And where can I get the best ones in Perth!

Also Bellebonne! Nice selection there. Well the Arras LD are very impressive wines, and that looks like a decent price. I don't know which area you're in in Perth, but I have three go-to's personally: Lamont's Cottesloe, Old Bridge Cellars Nth Freo, and Re Store Leederville. All three usually find what I want, even if they don't have it in stock. Lots of great wine stores in Perth to choose from.

Tasmania are kicking goals with their Sparkling. We had an 2009 Grand Vintage Arras this year and it was superb. Nutty, brioche with that beautiful salty sea breeze freshening the palate. Great video Erin definitely need a sparkling glassware episode soon!

I have a newbie question please: The pouring. In my mind I think I'd wanna pour gently with the glass sideways like with beer, since people seem to think bubble preservation in sparkling wine is important. But I never see presenters or waiters do that, but then I speculate that this something that stems from do's and don't for correct serving in a formal or semi formal setting. So in a setting where handling the glass isn't an issue, how about that sideways pour? Nonsense or some sense?
@erinlarkin
@erinlarkin Жыл бұрын
Good question! I pour all wine straight into the glass, without angling it. In beer, if you do this, you encourage the bubbles/head to form, which can spoil the experience. With still wine this is not a consideration, and with sparkling wine, the pour has to be conducted with some care. If it is old (and perhaps more fragile) or you are impatient then yes, I would certainly pick up the glass and pour it on an angle. Otherwise, careful pouring is better. Does that answer it for you?

@@erinlarkin I have to be honest and say no. I'm confused. I thought pouring on an angle IS careful pouring. Anyway, I feel that we're getting hung up on hazy minutia and would suggest that we just leave it. Thanks for all the responses.
