This is my first Top-Bar Hive and is based on the Les Crowder design. Once built, I began playing with the basic hive and top-bars. I started evaluating how best to transfer a Langstroth Nuc to this hive. I engineered a unique method of holding up to 6 deep langstroth frames upright in the middle of the hive. Hopefully as the colony builds out into the hive and starts to leave the the original frames then the langstroth frames can be removed.
Update: The TBH has worked great and we are really enjoying the ease of working and inspection. You can see our inspection video here. • Top bar hive inspection

Nice engineering. Potential issues you may have is orienting comb at 90 degrees during the conversion process. Bees building comb dislike changes of direction, to the point where they may abandon the hive completely. It's worth a punt but be prepared for a swarm.

Great Video I attempted the same concept but I never thought of doing what you did. I do also have Les style Top Bar hives. Would you happen to have the plans for the adapter?

I'm preparing to add nucs to top bar hives.. do you have any other videos for how the transition went.. or lessons learned for me? Thanks! Great video. I don't mind the music

I have a few other videos of the TBH in action. It worked fine and with weekly checks no cross combing happened to the extent that I was unable to control. As TBH comb was built I rotated and moved it out of the adapter and into the main box. Once enough TBH bars were made I made sure to move the queen over and then let the bees clean out the frame comb. If they needed fed the frame comb was a good place to add frames of honey from another hive. The hive was strong through the season but I think maybe too big going into winter and they either starved or froze. I will definitely work harder to insulate the box in the future.

Josh.. I know this video is a few years old but your ideas are good. Would be interested in getting the dimensions on the frame for the langstroff end of the box. I hope you didn't give up on this idea.

I have not abandoned the hive and would certainly like to keep bees that way in the future but advice I have received and would forward is that a bee keeper needs to have no less than 2 hives and preferably 3. This allows sharing frames when needed. Of course that advice assumes all hives are the same. I have not been successful in getting a TBH through winter but do have multiple Langstroths which I winter with a quilt box and sugar cubes. I also wrap them in tar paper. The entire hive is just easier to winterize and the bees ultimately survive. Not as easy or successful with the TBH in my experience.

Here is the same hive full of bees. It was really my only successful year and the hive went into winter strong but ended up dying out before spring. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n6l_h5WnurjcnGg.html

@@muckleyj Josh, thanks for the update. I put together a similar set up on my TBH and they seem to have done fairly well. It took them a long time to move out of the original 5 Langstroff bars and onto the top bars but they have, however they are still residing in the Lanstroff bars as the breeding bars. I'm now in the process of winterizing them so I hope they can make it through the winter.

@@1918Camel If you move the queen to the top bars and leave an empty bar between the "converter" the queen typically won't walk across the gap. If you have a top bar that is filled with honey she definitely won't walk across that. Each time you inspect you can check that she hasn't moved back to the langs. If she did then move her back and do 2 blanks. If she does it again go 3 blanks. Eventually the langs will all hatch and the bees will not have as much disire to hang out on the langs. Let them eat out the honey and pollen and then remove. I had to work out a single frame at a time each time I was in the hive. Hell as long as the majority of the food and brood are in the top bar area moving out a few langs with food and brood isn't to big of a deal. Good luck winterizing. I use oxalic acid vap after the brood is gone in the fall and before they come in the spring.

@@muckleyj That is a really good idea.. Thanks for passing that along. I will defiantly do that if they make it through the winter. Glad I mentioned it and again, thanks for the help.

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions regarding music. I'm really not a professional videographer and simply use the KZfaq tools available. As such the means for "reducing the volume" on this published video are unavailable. Sorry. You can keep leaving redundant comments about the music but it will continue to be ineffective.

I recommend pinning your comment to the top of the comment section. It will reduce the repeat comments. Love your video despite the music. Thanks for sharing.

Suggestion: reddit the video with NO MUSIC, and after uploading it, put the link to it in the description for this video, and put a Pinned comment saying "if the music bothers you, check out the version with no music here:" That way you don't lose the metrics on this one, but can make a watchable version easy to select. This is a great idea, but I was barely able to avoid smashing my phone with a rock after a minute of that music, not to mention but being able to hear some of what you said. There is no need or benefit to having music behind a talking video, so don't think that you need to do it, your video and description was well done, and doesn't need anything on top of it. It's like putting butter on top of a slice of grandma's chocolate cake. Just not really needed.... Lol

I tried that too. It's tough and you definitely need a follower board. Hive inspections on long langs need some sort of cover to "hold back" the bees.
