@@RonHenry Hey man!! Thanks sooooo much my lawn is really coming along!! I’m getting ready to top dress soon but I’m wondering if I should dethatch before I drop all the sand on my lawn. Ron, I started following your videos last Spring (2021) to get ideas regarding products to improve my lawn. We had major construction on our home during the summer and fall of 2020 and our once beautiful lawn was nothing but mud! Construction was completed the second week of December (2020) and I knew I had my work cut out for me in the Spring of 2021. I followed all your suggestions on lawn growth, seeding, fertilizing, cutting and tools to make the job easier. You should see my lawn now (April 15, 2022). WOW! Beautiful green thick grass is now once again a permanent feature of our home 🤗. I could not have done it without all your recommendations…I can’t thank you enough! Happy Easter, Ron!

So been checking out a few of these vids of yours. I recently did an 8k sod job on my front yard. Purchased this home 3yrs ago. Previous owner cut corners on the lawn. Only laid sod 20 ft from edge of house into yard. Front yard is 265 ft wide and 60 ft deep. Previous owner had home for 6yrs. I purchased the home and 3yrs in realized that the St Augustine would never grow out to cover front yard. So being I live in between Houston and Conroe Tx where we either get massive amounts of rain or no rain for 30 days with 92f to 100f deg everyday I needed to do something. Front yard had 7 pine trees 60ft to 90ft tall. Th excessive pine straw and cones year around absorbed every drop of water on one end of yard along with the sweet gum and black jack oaks and the Chinese ash the grass didn’t stand a chance. So I removed 4 pines 2 sweet gums and 2 ash. Ground all the stumps removed all debris and brought in 30yds of top soil 25 yds of farmers compost and tilled it all in. Extended sprinklers system with 3 new stations 11 heads and 530ft of pipe. Started watering about 30 minutes a day along with some real good rains and in 2 weeks my front yard is unrecognizable. My question for you is I would like to begin applying a leveling material. Since my lawn is so young I don’t want to weaken it. In a month the temperature here will begin reaching the mid 90’s f. I will of course continue watering all I need. I have a water well so unless we run into a 90 day drought I should be ok. So let me know what you think i should use.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
Wow MP. You're doing a MAJOR renovation. Very, ver cool. You can apply leveling mix without issue as long as you go light. Don't bury the entire lawn in sand. What you saw me do in this video about as heavy as you need to go. With temperatures going up, the lawn should push through the sane quickly and recover nicely. Between all the tree removals, stump grinding and top soil work, you're definitely on the home stretch. Keep going. The nice thing about leveling your lawn with a 70 /30 sand/compost mix is you can do it several times in a season if you want. The big thing is to go light. Thanks so much for watching and definitely keep me posted on how the lawn develops. 👍😎

Hey Mr. Henry I love watching your channel and watching how you are maintaining your Arden 15, I have a Yukon and Manaco hybrid Bermuda lawn I started from seed in Marietta/Smyrna, Ga. I wanted to comment that your goal of topdressing with the 70/30 mix is to create a sand cap, like the professional turf fields have. So whenever you core aerate your clay base soil it is important to remove all plugs on the lawn, "how to with Doc" really covered in his aeration videos for his green, or his lushes common Bermuda lawn that he has been aerating and leveling for several seasons. He points out that the clay that is pulled out during the aeration process should be removed because when it is left on the surface it can be smashed flat by equipment causing little bumps that do not mix well with the sand leveling, thus preventing you from developing a greens grade rooting mix cap that you are going for, and cause you to have to level even more to get a rooting cap of about 1.5"-2" thick. What I would suggest base on the nutrient program you have, is that you run a rotary mower at an inch, on mulch setting, so to grind up all the cores and help return the nutrients from them into the soil in a way that won't cause you to have to level your yard even more to get the results you desire.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for chiming in Broc. The plugs on my lawn from aeration were broken up when I worked the sand in with the leveling rake. I've not experienced issues with any of them getting mashed flat and causing bumps in the lawn. I could totally see picking up plugs if you're creating a green in your lawn but that's not my goal. I'm only mowing just under half an inch so very far from actual greens heights of cut. Appreciate the feedback.
@brocbailey9384
@brocbailey9384 3 жыл бұрын
@@RonHenrythe point about the low height comes in because of how thick your canopy is. So if a person with mostly clay Georgia soil, like mine, would want to pick up the cores since the clay around me tends to not break down to a small enough size to work into the canopy of low cut heights. One of the reasons I like to remove them is so that the aeration holes could be entirely filled with rooting mix/sand, allowing for more water penetration. thus allowing you to remove some clay from your soil and replace it with the nutrient from granular products like you did. Hope your lawn holds in there through these storms so I can see the Adren 15 truly outcompete the common that is in there. Also these storms will really be a test to see how well the Level mix works to hold seed down and not wash out like people say river sand tends to do.
@RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
@@brocbailey9384 I think you should remove the cores if you think there's a big benefit to it. I just posted to my KZfaq stories about the state of the lawn with all the heavy rain coming down. So far so good. Thanks for watching sir!

The edditing and content of this video is top notch! Wow, your lawn is 3 times bigger than my entire property, and I already have the biggest property in my area. It must be a ton of work to keep it as nice as it is. Over here, this year's spring is very cold with frost at night time even in May (last year we were sweatting at this time of the year). This realy slows down the germination process of my new lawn, and the pigeons have really developed a taste for my seeds. I have been re-applying seeds three times since March and it is still full of brown patches (also thanks to the pigeons). Can't wait for temperatures to finally match the time of the year.

Thanks so much Ewoodster. The edit was a ton of work. Fairly happy with how it came out though. The lawn is fairly large but not the biggest. It is one of the most flat lawns after Alex's. It only takes about 1 hour to mow so not too bad. Sorry to hear about the birds having a feast in your lawn. Warmer temps should be here soon at which point you should get better germination. Just a word about Big Yellow Bag - the product is not consistent from franchise to franchise. What you received was exactly what I wanted and expected. However, I received a bag that was a high percentage of their rich black garden soil and hardly any sand. No good for top dressing if the goal is creating a sand cap. I had asked for the ratio of sand to peat moss (which was another problem - it was garden soil, not peat like the website said) and they said it was a trade secret; they wouldn't answer the question.To make a long story short, I had to send back my two bags and go with masonry sand.

Heya Frank. Thanks for letting us know. That's definitely something to bring up to them when ordering the leveling mix; that it needs to be a 70 / 30 blend so that you get the best of both worlds. I'm not sure why they call it a trade secret. It's on their website that it's 70 /30. I don't believe there's peat moss in Soil3. It's grass, wheat straw and manure. I show a combination of techniques Brian. You don't need a dingo and top dressing machine to level your lawn. In this and other videos, I do show how to do top dress using basic tools. 😎 The only "luxury" tool I think everyone should spring for is a good leveling rake. It makes the job much easier. Keep in mind that what you're seeing on my lawn wasn't done in a year. This is year 6 of me working on it. The 7 bags of the level mix were donated by Super Sod. Great Video Ron. I am coming up on my second leveling this year went with 100% sand with River sand Inc.'s USGA product. I am debating going with a mix this year as I don't know if i want to spend the money on the soil3 prices for 8000 sqft or see what River sand carries. trying a little later in the month as my recovery took longer last year when i did it at the end of April. I have found that it is alot harder to find the top dress machine then a dingo. Although Toro does have a shortage of the dingo's. Keystone seams to be the closes place to me with one for rent and I am on the other side of north GA in Canton. The pregnant wife says she will enjoy watching me do it by hand this year as she was my Wheelbarrow filler last year :)

Hi Nicholas. If you've had good results with River Sand Inc's sand, I would just keep using that. If River Sand Inc offers a sand/soil mix then give a shot and see how it works. I agree that the Soil3 level mix is a bit pricey. It's great stuff though. Maybe if you're getting a bunch of it, they might discount. If you can wait until late May to June, the lawn will recover faster. I wanted to get this done now to have some content for you guys and also because temps are where they need to be for Arden 15 to germinate. Keystone is great to work with. @RonHenry
@RonHenry 3 жыл бұрын
I've always done light top dressing xray1337 so I've not introduced any layering problems. I suppose that if you started with a heavy soil top dress and put sand on top of it, you could be working against yourself from a leveling standpoint since the soil doesn't have the structure that sand does. Not an issue for most homeowner. Unless all your care about is leveling, I would go with a 70 / 30 blend since that's a good compromise between adding structure while feeding the soil.
