Those shorts were considered street wear in 1970. I recall wearing them for both casual and dressy occasions, sometimes with colored tights and boots. They were actually more demure than their predecessor, the micro-mini.

Love the review ! But the only trend I like is the masculine/feminine mix. I’ve often used a watered-down version of this in the past and am also a great lover of mixing classic with something quirky or casual with something formal. I think these are great techniques for satisfying different parts of your personality. ❤

I'm late commenting, but I thought about my wardrobe and I've been wearing masculine and feminine as well. For example, a military-inspired olive jacket with feminine pieces, like a floral midi dress, or a maxi skirt, and sometimes even paired with combat boots. I'm tall so I personally avoid wearing short shorts.

Unfortunately much as I love clothes and fashion, at 65 I don’t think any of these looks would be apropos - I’d stop traffic for the wrong reason . I did like the Chanel cardigan over the tiny shorts - I knitted a similar one 45 years ago which everyone called my “ ethnic Peruvian horse blanket “! I loved it though , it would have been on trend . Dear Justine , can you do something on how us older ladies can use these looks , translate them into something we can enjoy ?

While you can absolutely wear whatever you want as someone who is 26 I now understand how much bodies change as you get older! I think that’s why it’s so hard for people to make looks for “older” women because there’s so much more variety! It’s the same reason so many books are written about teens and young adults, we are more “relatable” because we don’t have as many distinct life experiences yet. Kinda sad though because I think variety in art is really awesome and age is a fairly unexplored category (especially for women)

I went the other way during the lockdowns. I noticed that I just sat on the couch when I wore sweatpants. I upgraded all my sweatpants to linen pants (still with a stretchy waistband but a very different look) and invested in some very comfy bralettes. For the masc/femme I’ve always kinda done that, I’ve been wearing men’s jeans and watches for years paired with very feminine shoes. No tiny shorts for me - I hate sitting down and sticking to a hot plastic seat. I want them mid thigh at least. 😄 I like the metallic trend. I have a satin gold top that I haven’t worn in years because I thought it looked dated but I guess I can take it out again.

Thanks for your clear and always relaxed observations on the trends, Justine. Whoa....tiny shorts! I'm not surprised that designers have surrendered to Tiny Shorts -- they have taken over, and girls are not giving them up! I'm in Sydney. Teenagers and the under-25's wear tiny shorts (weather permitting) pretty much every time they step out the door - on the trains, buses, going shopping, to the movies and Into Town. Tiny shorts are not just "beach" or "festival" attire here. Parents have had to accept that their 12-year-old-and-up daughter must be allowed to wear tiny shorts in the street, if she wants to fit in with her peer group. For the young they an Essential Wardrobe Piece, and they are in every clothing shop that caters to those under 30. As proof of this, tiny shorts are one of the 2 basic uniform pieces for young waitresses in most cafes near me. The other basic bottom piece worn by waitresses is leggings (very thin, like opaque pantihose), over a G-string and with an elasticised top above. Bra very optional. I am still mildly bemused by being served my coffee by someone who appears to have put an apron on directly over her underwear.

Former trend predictor here! I've bought just about all your predictions EXCEPT the large florals and the micro-shorts. Three pairs of metallic shoes, vintage jackets from the 90s (very high quality) and navy blue blazers. Moi non plus. Ultra short shorts are no longer an option, if they ever were one for me. I'm in my sixties, lost ~40 lbs in the 3-6 months before and the first 6-12 months of the pandemic (Dec 2019 - ~Jan/Feb 2021), and although I have regained 5-10 lbs and no longer look quite so cadaverishly thin, I look better with at least the top half of my thighs covered (hiding loose skin). I think even in my twenties I only liked showing that much leg with a swim suit.

@@amydevol8224 Back in the 70's I can remember wearing burgundy velvet hotpants and stacked lame knee boots to go clubbing. It must have looked daft then, and it certainly would now. Every decade has it 'OMG did I really wear THAT?' And short shorts is one of those, in my opinion.

@flower-ss2jt I also went to the disco clubs of the late '70s/early '80s. My preference at that time was for shiny lycra leotards usually a faux wrap style in a tank or long sleeved version depending on the season, a matching lycra wrap or pull-on skirt, Sheer Energy or similar compression pantyhose or tights, and sandles which were exchanged for highland dance ghillies once inside the club and we had established a base of operations, basically dance gear. At least half of us were involved with Scottish country dancing, some also took highland dance and competed throughout the Southeast highland games and were there strictly to dance. The group was usually a half dozen or more.

I'd say it depends on how you style that detail with the rest of the outfit. Flowers come and go in terms of trends, so they'll likely come again in the future. But I'd agree if you said that it's more of a trendy thing than "masculine - feminine", for instance.

I look forward to your videos because you are so straight forward with information. How is your house renos going. Southern France is so beautiful with large open areas not developed. I can't wait to see what you do with such a stunning home with the great bones it has. Best of luck.

I wore hot pants ( tiny short shorts) in the seventies. My favorite pair was white. I wore them with a flowered tunic top with a zipper all the way down the front. My white Barbarella boots that came up in points above my knees completed the look. 😊

Justine, I just want to say that you've helped me find my style in every way. Just about every piece of clothing I buy has mostly natural fibers, I know how to look for pieces that are well made, I know what pieces go well with my skin tone, I've found my main inspiration (timeless parisian), which includes my makeup style (natural, highlighting my features rather than covering, with a pop of red lipstick) and I know which clothing works with my body shape. I grew up with a single mother who was a total hippie- ripped jeans, soft tops with holes in them, no makeup- and you've taught me all I needed to know to be confident and to be true to myself. I'm enormously grateful to you ❤️

Justine - your dolman, v neck is fabulous. During the 80’s I had this similar color in a dolman banded bottom sweater paired with silk velvet pants & high heels for the disco. I am geared toward clean necklines and minimalism. Outstanding video!🎉❤

Always so informative and fascinating. I learn so much from your measured responses to things. Watching some of these trends and seeing some of the red carpet wear, I am often left wondering if some of the clothes lean into figure skating costume.

I loved the Dior dress with the shorts and sheer skirt over it. I agree, I’d prefer the shorts longer for me personally to wear it. It’s elegant. As for floral, love the idea of painting florals on a jean jacket. I’d probably buy a jacket via second hand to paint on it. Of course I appreciate your “devilish” quote!

im a plus size 53 yr old. I love clothes and love fashion. However, i don't always trust plus size fashion to give me insperation. But this sure did. I have A LOT of clothes and I'm trying the 5 rule just cause i need to slow down here. This definitly gave me inspiration. I remember wearing oversize blazers with hot pants with tights and femme fatale shoes. Mostly all black cause i wasn't as flashy as I am now lol. I have a blazer or two that are more masculine and no I won't be parring them with any hot pants any time soon though. But this video gave me an idea, i nave a lovely leopard print sleevless dress. I can pare it with my black sweater vest, belt and one of my blazers. Probably not my black one, but my brown plaid or wear my cream coloured angora sweater jacket. Shoes though are stumping me, as i am not into heels much anymore as I have MS. I usually do wedges now, which could work or.. wait i have a great pair of red swede flats. I think that would round it out nicely. Or if its raining my combat boots lol. I also have an oversize striped blazer that is statement initself, I need to work on an outfit for that. I need more flowy skirts I think.

Would definitely do the shorts trend. I live in the tropics, so shorts are not considered inappropriate work attire in some places. I work in wardrobe, the “dress code” is fluid. I would probably wear them with a sheer or crocheted cardigan, like a beach cover and maybe a silky solid color top, tucked into the shorts. Throw on a pair of comfy sandals and off I go
