Hi E I'm currently halfway into my Dark Tower reread. Of all the books in the series, Wizard and Glass was my least favourite and the one I wasnt looking forward to reading again. Boy........ was I wrong. I absolutely loved it this time around. I hated it when I was 27 years old, but think it's a bit of a masterpiece now I'm 49. My only criticism is that it ruined the momentum that had been building with the first three books I very rarely disagree with your views and opinions on Stephen King books, but I feel this is one of his best written works. But hey, wouldn't it be so boring if we all agreed. Kind regards from across the pond Richard.
@alechorowitz52793 жыл бұрын
"Dreamcatcher" is the ultimate example of a book that falls apart as you read it. It starts out with a fine set up, a group of old friends going on a trip in the snow, than things get more and more disjointed, than the plot falls apart, than you start to notice Stephen King wrote this high on painkillers because he did when his leg was broken. The whole floating on a bed overlooking stuff sequences that come out of nowhere are so trippy Kurt Vonnegut would call it a bit much.

I'm sure there's plenty of stuff I like that you don't like. It really is as simple as that. But if you want to go into specifics, not even King likes the novel. He calls it "a mess of a book" which it most certainly is in structure if in no other way. But if you liked it what does it matter, right? Even serial killers get fan mail 😉

I'm with you on the first four books. But, man, I loved Wizard and Glass. On one hand, I totally AGREE that the huge novel-within-the-novel of backstory kind of jammed up the momentum of the series just as it was finding its legs. You're right about that. But I found Roland's backstory to be one of King's best standalone stories. It was emotional and gripping, but also full of adventure and intrigue. It felt for a time that I was reading The Stand again, in a weird way, which is interesting because those first and last chapters around the backstory novel also allude to The Stand, tying those worlds together. I found the next book, Wolves of the Calla, just "OKAY" so again, I think you made a valid point about the momentum from The Wastelands being squandered. But I happened to love Roland's backstory, and if they ever make a Dark Tower TV series (please please please!) I want Roland's backstory to be a part of it, but not sure how they'd work it in except maybe a series of flashbacks.

+Kit Power I think that almost killed the series for me. Knowing his backstory destroyed all the mystery behind him.
@KitPowerwriter6 жыл бұрын
Ah! Okay, I totally get that, even though for me it was the exact opposite - I felt it humanized him in a way that made total sense of the man he became, and the man he'd continue to evolve into as the rest of the saga played out. I love reading Roland's backstory, so I really like Wizard & Glass. My least favourite Dark Tower book would be Song of Susanna, and my least favourite King overall would definitely be The Cell which I DNF'd (it felt like reading a screenplay and also -at the time- I wasn't really a fan of zombie stuff, so yeh it was just a bit of a fail for me). I am planning a chronological read through of all his books soon and I do intend to finish it this time (and also Lisey's Story which is currently unread despite being way in his back catalogue. I've picked it up a few times but I never get very far because I really don't like Lisey's narrative voice). Elevation was awful. Definitely agree with you on Tommyknockers and Dreamcatcher, but I enjoyed From a Buick 8 and Eyes of the Dragon.

Everyone has their own likes and dislikes and with over fifty published books there is certainly grounds for disagreement. But I will say Wizard and Glass is my favorite Dark Tower book closely followed by The Waste Lands. I agree From a Buick 8 is bad and Dreamcatcher was so lousy I couldn't finish it.
@EdwardLorn6 жыл бұрын
defiantsisko No judgment from me. I am curious, though, did you read them back to back or when they came out? I know a lot of my hated stems from being burned after waiting so many years between books.
@defiantsisko6 жыл бұрын
Edward Lorn I read the first three around the time The Waste Lands came out. And I loved that book so much and waiting until 1997 for Wizard and Glass was torture. I was so lucky to happen upon a copy of the 40,000 copy limited edition at a book store at the mall in August so I didn't have to wait until November to get it. Honestly the hardest thing other than waiting was remembering enough of the story to not feel lost at times when reading the next volume. I will also say that The Wind Through the Keyhole is not really a Dark Tower book, nearly all of it is about a tale that really has nothing to do with the overall narrative of Roland and his groups quest. Not in any way necessary to fully enjoy the completeness of the other seven volumes.

Wizard and Glass was fucking amazing. This guy doesn't like romance he said. *possibly because he's .... never mind. Not going to get nasty....

Enjoyed your review! Wastelands is my top King book so far but I have a lot to go. I also have to agree about wizard and glass slamming down the breaks on the entire series. At first I hated it but by the time I finished reading it I was completely wrapped up in the romance/western tale. I just feel like he could have trimmed the book quite a bit and moved it around somewhere else in the series.

i dissagree on you about Wizard and Glass, its my favorite King Novel ever, shortly followed by The Waste Lands. i agree though on Dreamcather. its the only book of King i DNF't. also, i loved Eyes of the Dragon also as well. its true that it realy doesnt feel like a king novel but it is realy good and kind of funny. the other ones i havent read so i dont know.

A year late: bottom five... * Insomnia: did the exact opposite to me... * The Tommyknockers: parts are cool, smaller parts are brilliant...but most of it feels confusing and chaotic ...then, a virtual tie... Dark Tower 5...6...and 7... By far all three feel forced and patched together. All three do not have that awesome, organic, anything can happen yet make sense feel the 1st four books have in spades. King often said the DT books were different: he would rarely if ever think about visiting Roland and his Ka Tet...they would suddenly sneak up on him and sort of take over...these 3, and the other two on this list, all read more like he did exactly what he said he was going to do shortly after the accident: just sit down and finish it..

I agree with your list except Book four of The Dark Tower...I waited so long for that book and was afraid he would never finish the series before dying off like Frank Herbert did with Dune and The wheel of Time books with Robert Jorden...You know the massive cliffhanger endings of The Waste Lands and the end of book 6 of Dune was a huge cliffhanger as well...But maybe the relief of getting Book 4 of TDT was enough for me to love it SOOO much...ya it drags a bit after Roland starts his tale but I liked the romance aspect to the story...Anyway good video.

I totally agree with your assessment of The Tommyknockers. Great concept, great beginning, but it seemed to drag on and on, for example multiple attempts from people attempting to get into the town, and dying. It felt like he didn't have an overall outline. It felt like he made it up as he went along. I did love that these people affected from the gas from the ship, were inventing stuff that was sometimes way beyond what humans will ever achieve, by combing simple parts from the store, and lots and lots of batteries. I liked that the alcoholic was immune because of the levels of alcohol in his system, or maybe the damage to his brain. I read it because some reviewers said it was their favorite Stephen King book.

I adored Eyes of the Dragon back as a teen in the 90s when I first encountered King and read pretty much everything he'd written up till then. Of course, I haven't reread it since (though I remember Randal Flagg as the evil wizard fondly). As for Wizard and Glass; yeah I'm with you. I _hated_ that book and I remember feeling betrayed that the saga barely continued in it(if memory serves, all that happened besides backstory was the resolution of the Blaine the Mono cliffhanger and the ka-tet ran into Walter/Marten/Flagg in lime a scale model of the Emerald City from Oz.

For me personally, I didn’t care about The Eyes of the Dragon that much either. Probably because I’m not a big fantasy fan, but I couldn’t really find anything wrong with it, I just didn’t love it. For Tommyknockers, I feel like it just drug on way longer than it should and had way too much. It started out fine and ended fine but the rest was just eh I really liked Dreamcatcher, I felt it was super terrifying and the characters were done great. The story felt neat to me too. I don’t see why people dislike it i really liked it And I haven’t read the other two you discussed so I can’t say anything about it

I tried reading The Stand and Tommyknockers and compare them to his great novellas: he was in sore lack of a decent editor. I'm a writer myself, and this probably reinforces my pedantry. Great stories can be told in 300 pages.

Hi Edward. Good video, indeed! I agree with you with Tommyknockers, Dreamcatcher, The Eyes of the Dragon, Buick 8, but not with Wizard and Glass, which, from my point of view, is not the best in the DT series but not the worst of SK's books. I think Lisey's Story is just horrible and the only SK book I was about to quit, although I finally struggled to finish it over a couple of months. At a similar level I think you may have Rose Madder. Anyways, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. Thanks for such enjoyable video!

I agree with From a Buick 8. I couldn't finish it. But I will revisit it at some point. I'm currently 250 pages into Dreamcatcher. Part of me wants to see how bad it is, but so far it's ok....... Just ok, not terrible. The gear shift from The Waste lands to Wizard and glass was unnecessary. It ruins the flow of the series for me. On its own it's a good book, but out of place in the middle of the series. The Tommyknockers.... yep..... WTF. Read it 25 years ago and not interested in picking it up again. Some great ideas in it..... but just too fuelled by cocaine and alcohol. I personally am not too keen on the Bill Hodges trilogy. It just doesn't work in my opinion. I'd be interested on what your thoughts on them are? Love your show. Keep up the good work.

I have a 500 plus Stephen King collection and there are five books that didn’t do it for me at all. 1. Lisey’s Story (terrible) 2. Sleeping Beauties (couldn’t finish) 3. Bag of Bones 4. Insomnia (too long) 5. The Tommyknockers

Now, I've read only 10 books by Stephen King so far, currently reading 11th (Wizard and Glass, nope, not gonna skip anything there ;-)), I like all of the books I've read so far, I will read all of them again at some point, but, there are 3 which I didn't enjoy as much: 1. The Hearts of Atlantis - I LOVE the first story, didn't care about the rest, though I have listened to it on audio, so definitely gonna read all of it at some point. 2. The Cycle of the Werewolf - Completely fine book, short little tale for a afternoon, put it here, because there is just not much to it, simple little book. 3. The Drawing of the Three - Possibly my least favorite, but honestly, can't tell why really, didn't pull me in.

I got trapped halfway through Wizard and Glass back in 2015 and (as yet) have not been able to progress with the rest of The Dark Tower series (which I was enjoying up until then). Thanks for the tip of just reading the first and last chapter! ;0)

This exactly what happened to me. Maybe I should give another shot so I progress to the other books in the series

I agree with you about all of them except Eyes of the Dragon. Eyes of the Dragon wasn't his best but I enjoyed it enough. I have only read the first three Dark Tower books so I haven't made it to Wizard and Glass yet. Tommyknockers made me take a break from King for a bit because I hated it so much, but of course I returned to him eventually haha.

When you said “I don’t like anything King writes with Romance” I assumed you was going to pull out Gerald’s Game. I hated that book😂

I thought "Wizard and Glass" was sort of letdown too. I definitely don't hate it, but it hardly got the ka-tet anywhere on the journey. Almost all of it was back story, which I didn't get that much into. There are some Stephen King stories that I do hate, but which I think are brilliant. That's more common.

I read the first chapter of The Eyes of the Dragon when I was about 15, couldn't get into it, put it down and haven't felt the need to pick it up again in the intervening 18ish years. Dreamcatcher was probably the worst movie/tv adaptation that I've seen, it was just weird. When my friend and I left the cinema after the movie, we just looked each other in shock like "What the hell was that?".

+Sarah Frost that was me after the book, which isn't too different from the movie lol

I just finished the Tommy knockers I have to say ... yeah I sort of liked it. I was really getting into Bobbi and Grad Story but over 500 pages to dig something up only to spend what 20 pages inside it was such a nonevent. The end was good. A lot of it could have been edited down better

My bookcase looks just like yours. Soulmates omg But yeah, he sucks now. Edit: whoa, Wizard and Glass is your worst? Let's debate!

I actually think he's better nowadays than he's ever been. REVIVAL and THE OUTSIDER are two of my favorite books. With WIZARD AND GLASS, I think it all come down to the romance. I hate romance, this I hated that book.

_Joyland_ is his worst probably. Also can you do a review to _House of Leaves_ and _Slade House?_ Definitely a creepy and disturbing books.

+George Miller I don't own either of those books, but if I ever come across them for a decent price, sure. And I loved JOYLAND 😉

Dark Tower VI is my least favorite of his novels. It had a few good moments, but wasn't particularly enjoyable overall.

100% with you on Wizard and Glass. I've read the series maybe three times now and the last time I read it did exactly what you said - ready the first and last bits! I remember reading it the first time and was just SO bored! If I ever read the series again I will definitely skip it. I just don't feel like it adds anything to an other wise brilliantly written story.

I tried to read the shinning and I kinda felt like he went on and on. Idk I think he tends to get hung up on details. When I explain to other people why I can’t get into Stephen king to people, I tell them “I do t need to know where the damn curtains in the dining room where the weird creature was found, were manufactured ..,or what they looked like ten years ago at ten AM on October the 13th”. My mother didn’t like dream catcher either (she’s the huge Stephen king fan).

I think you've made those details up lol

I simply can't understand all the hate for Tommyknockers. The story is great, there's comedy, the ending is perfect, probably it should have been 200 pages shorter but still...I love it as it is. I love King's stories where evil affects a whole community. Anyway my worst King books list : 5. Firestarter 4. Cujo 3. Gerald's Game 2. Dolores Claiborne 1. Cell

Yes there is some crap right around page 350 like you said, but once you get past that the conclusion is pretty satisfying.

Speaking of weak second halfs or parts or whatever, as much as I love "It", the whole ancient turtle stuff was stupid I think. So the ending was weaker than the first 999 pages or whatever. But it still is probably my favorite book from him.

I've read a little over half of his books and the one I had to force myself to finish was Geralds Game. Good story but just couldn't hold my attention span like the others I've read

Tommyknockers was my first Stephen King book, terrifying at 11 yrs old. Not in my top 5, but top 10. One of the only ones that may be better in Audiobook form.
@justinthyme26662 жыл бұрын
I've always thought Tommyknockers was written at the rock bottom days of his drug use, but I may be wrong . I haven't tried it. My biggest disappointment with king is Under the dome. I had such high hopes for it, being essentially like an apocalypse for that town, but I just never cared for the characters some reason and big Jim's (or whatever his name was) form of cussing was just ridiculous. I never understood his angle with that
@luckydog2213 жыл бұрын
Subscribed, also never cared for "The girl who loved Tom Gordon" fell kinda flat for me, just was bored overall, Cell I had a difficult time with and Buick 8 I had a love/hate thing going on

I honestly enjoyed Tommyknockers. The ending is pretty cool and action packed, but it takes a while to get there. It was my first Stephen King book, so maybe that makes me enjoy it more. I heard that there is supposedly a TV show called Haven that is based off of it.
@EdwardLorn6 жыл бұрын
The Haven tv series has more to do with THE COLORADO KID.
@jimhaggard74366 ай бұрын
Yes, Haven is inspired by The Colorado Kid. The Tommyknockers (which I enjoyed for the most part) has a TV movie made of it in 1993 with Jimmy Smits as James Gardener and Marg Helgenberger as Bobbi. Insomnia (1994) was the first Stephen King novel I struggled to finish.
@Jonas37933 жыл бұрын
I loved the Tommyknockers and the Dome. Just hated the last quarter of the Dome. He could have left out the whole cause of the dome and been a hundred percent better. Edit: I also loved the Wizard and the Glass. Not so much a fan of book six and never read book seven.
