After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Interpreted it differently tbh. Rooster is depicted as a safe, cautious fighter in contrast to Maverick and Hangman. Big part of his character progression was learning to push the limits. Him having the mask on is a subtle characterization of the adherence to rules and regulations.

Maverick punished Phoenix for Hangman's error by shooting her down. The purpose of the wingman is to protect the main fighter as it makes the attack. If you leave you leave your wingman, both pilots are vulnerable and have no protection. Hangman discovered this when Maverick used an old trick; flying up towards the sun , dazzling the pursuing Hangman. He was then able to get behind Hangman and make make his move. Too late, Hangman realized that he needed to stay with his wingman. He kept asking Phoenix if she could see Maverick. She told him that she was dead.

The magic "hitting the brakes' maneuver is a Cobra maneuver, and if you watch some real fighter pilots reacting to top gun 1 and 2, they pretty much all say its a bad idea. Age and experience, beats ego every time and they got that lesson beat into them with every push-up. Especially when having skin in the game ends up costing you doing push-ups on a hot ramp, bringing a whole new meaning to" the more you sweat now, the less you will bleed later" . Remember the old guys have been there before and they know what it's like to lose, some lessons you have to learn the hard way.

Funny enough, Hangman and Phoenix are the only ones who did what you really want to do in a 2v1 fight. It's hard to look out two sides of your canopy at once, and it's much more advantageous to go different directions since your opponent can only go after one of you. If Phoenix--or for that matter anyone in this movie--moved the jet more to prevent a gun solution and actually tried to do some defensive BFM, they'd have won that fight eventually.

I think what movie trying to show is Maverick's TTK is so fast, most tactics in guns only fight simply don't work because teammate can't survive long enough when being chased by Maverick. This is basically like playing duo in War Thunder and trying to apply Thach Weave but encountered a pro. Where your teammate died in seconds and you died a minute later. But I agree that the movie lacks actual tactics.
@Combatant5
@Combatant5 Жыл бұрын
@@8749236 it's not even that. In defensive BFM, it's not just about doing that cute little scissor they do. You move the airplane in all three dimensions and essentially are trying to force a collision. That doesn't happen in the movie.

@@Combatant5 True, but movie isn't about realism, if it does then it should be documentary, not a movie (popcorn movie to be precise). The movie uses picture as sort of visual language; what you are proposing will most likely confuse audience and only please flight sim players, which is the opposite of the goal of popcorn movie. If Eagle Dynamic funds a movie for DCS players, I'm certain that movie will feature more professional stunts.

Not trying to start an argument, Combatant, but have you ever actually flown combat? I can give you all the information you'd ever want about 2v1 tactics in one sentence when talking about modern aircraft. I flew the F-15E for 18 of my 32 years in the USAF and I think you'd get a good laugh out of the answer.

Even funnier is that's exactly what they are there to learn. The problem with some students, the always go into any training scenerio is that there is always one who knows all the tricks, yet they always seem to forget that the reason the instructor is there to teach them, usually means they have lived long enough to learn it all themselves. I saw this in the Marines myself. Always there is the one student who thinks the instructor is too old to see new things. Well guess what. Nope.

Every 2-seat-1seat combo had to do push ups except for Rooster and Payback/Fanboy, where only Rooster had to do push-ups. Does that mean they managed to use up Mavericks fuel?
