Let's just leave things where TGM ended and assume that Maverick is now retired and working on vintage airplanes. Let the character live out his days happy and at peace. Please don't bring him back for a 3rd movie just to kill him off. However, if they do kill him off in a 3rd movie, then bury him next to Iceman so they can be wingmen forever.

I would rather prefer a prequel over a third installment. There is so much mystery about his father Duke Mitchell.

There is no top gun movies without maverick....

Maverick didn’t just resolve his personal issues, he proved that he’s a true leader. He sacrificed himself for Rooster but also finally pushed him to rely on instinct instead of overthinking a maneuver that could end in catastrophe. Iceman didn’t protect Maverick for 30+ years just because he saved his life, he recognized he had the fearlessness to take on the missions and the instincts to persevere. When training the pilots for the mission Pete’s focus was to teach them how to make it back alive which didn’t seem to be an initial concern for Cyclone. Even if Cyclone goaded him into flying the test mission to prove it could be done, he still didn’t inspire the kind of leadership that even Viper did in the original Top Gun. If there’s a Top Gun 3 obviously Maverick will settle down with Penny and Amelia and he’s too old to continue to be a test pilot. He’s ready for a flag officer role and surely warrants a promotion to rear admiral. If they kill him off the fans will never forgive them and that’s not how Maverick’s story should end. Its ok for the hero to have a happy ending and pass the torch to Hangman and Rooster.

My suggestion for Top Gun 3 is instead of it being a sequel to TG2, make it a prequel to TG1. It will take place during the late 1960s - early1970s with Viper and Maverick's dad flying and fighting in F-4 Phantoms and involved in a mission during the Vietnam War.

Mav needs to be an Airwing Commander or Carrier CO or Battle group commander that has to send a group off on a risky mission he needs to provide the training for. They don't need to kill him off, just hand over the baton to the other pilots.

Killing Maverick is a dumb idea. Maybe he comes close like in the most recent, but something like him being married to Penny and having a family should force his hands into retirement after a horrible scare. I think a happy ending for Maverick can still have audiences ready to enjoy Rooster and hangman going forward.

7:06 He was seen in the cockpit again at the end of the movie because they tied Tom's own P-51 into the story as Maverick's P-51. He wasn't flying for Top Gun at this point, he was flying for Penny.

Please. No. Stop. Don't ruin a good thing! This is a franchise that truly works with the TWO movies. Great wrap up with an incredible movie! We don't need to see Mav die or hurt or anything but what we saw already. Leave it be!

He can pass the adventure to another character and retire to spend time with his son (he needs to get one). We can still have the story of Maverick's pre-Top Gun story, and his father's war story.

The only way to end Mavericks story is for him to be sitting on the flight deck of a A320 checking the flight manifest, and we see a close-up of the manifest. On the manifest is clearly visible Amazon Prime, as Maverick currently still flies as Captain Pete Mitchell for Amazon prime and on the manifest to labeled feces, dog, rubber, departing Hong Kong, bound for Los Angeles. Couldn’t get any funnier than that.

If a 3 film is made it has to involve the school, hence the name of the movie. If Maverick is in the film, he needs to be in the Air Boss role like Viper was, 34 years on the stick in a jet is enough. If the SR-72 is made public by then, it needs to be in the movie as part of the mission. I mean he was testing it "supposedly" in the 2nd movie. IMO, Maverick does need to be the lead character if a 3rd film is made, it should be about the next generation he taught, and about some new technology and enemy. Maybe a mission that pilots have to fly the mission cause Adm. Cain's drone program can't do the mission. Just some food for thought.

They don't have to kill off the main charactor. He could marry Penny and retire or become a consultant.

As far as the returning actors, don't forget how much training they had to do. Going through all of that with a new cast would take way too much time.

writing maverick off would be like writing off the fans ,have him in another film or 2 and maybe do vipers job ,but i would also like to see mavericks backstory how he got into it and little bit of his dad with viper included i would love to see that also how his dad died when viper told maverick what happened in the first film

Maverick, could do another Top Gun and then he could turn into a Viper role, he did this so well in the latest movie. I'd really love to see that. The next Top Gun could be with him, but with Rooster and Hangman and others on another mission but with more dog fighting, maybe a training exercise gone bad. I think they could do a pseudo spin-off focusing on Maverick's father in the Vietnam conflict, the story Viper tells "there were bogies like fireflies all over the sky" in the first movie.

Nah. They make him an Admiral and he'll groom Rooster. Everyone loves Rooster because of Goose and the story transitions to the young bloods.

Maverick loves his America as all Veterans and those serving always have. His quote at the beginning of Top Gun Maverick speak volumes, "I know what happens if this doesn't happens." Paraphrased.

Honestly, I'd have Maverick replace Warlock as NAWDC commander. It keeps him teaching people what it takes to be a pilot and keeps him home with Penny and Amelia; and possibly a kid on the way. If it involves the death of Hangman, Rooster and Phoenix could return to practice for their next mission while reuniting with Maverick. This would give the new students a chance to learn from people who have been there while also giving Phoenix and Rooster more leadership opportunities and responsibilities. (Plus, bring back BOB because "BOB")

I think that if they make a part 3 it should be about Maverick's dad and him dying in a dogfight. Shedding more light about how and why the military covered up Maverick's dad's death AND how it impacted Maverick's life. Including his struggles with not being able to get into the academy because of him being the son of his dad. Since how Tom Cruise tied in Penny Marshall's name mentioned in the first movie, into the second movie. So, they should do the same about how Viper talks about Maverick's dad and his death in that dogfight. Maybe they make the movie of Maverick reminiscing about his childhood and what he went through with his dad not being around? And perhaps Maverick ends up dying the same way his dad did by going back into a dogfight even though he could have made it out to save his own life? And maybe have Maverick take out 7 or 12 enemy planes before he is shot down and taken out? Making Maverick out shine his father's accomplishment. Then the ending could end with Rooster dealing with the death of Maverick in his arms. The same way Maverick dealt with the death of Goose?! That would be a good way to tie in the 3rd movie with the other two.

The story could start as Maverick is killed off in the beginning of the movie, but he returns during the film in past conversations, snippets, and so forth to keep him "alive". But initially, we all would know what had happened to Maverick, while introducing a new "ace"

I think it would be great if Top Gun 3 were to be made as a prequel to the first movie. For example it could follow the story of Maverick's father and his time in Vietnam which was a vital point of the first movie's plot.

My suggestion in Top Gun 3 is a prequel to Top Gun 1986. The story will focus on the relationship between Maverick and Charlie back then and they had a child and Maverick will meet his kid with Charlie who is also a fighter pilot.

The first movie ended with Maverick being a hero and making peace with iceman. The second ended with Maverick saving roosters son, rooster making peace with hangman, and Maverick committing to penny. There was never a sequel of what might happen next. I'm sure many of the top gun fans want to see rooster and his collègues carrying on the legacy of top gun. Rooster didn't dies so something must come afterwards. Maybe rooster and that female pilot I forgot her name, get married. We want to see what will Maverick do after his last mission. Will he settle with penny and keep teaching at top gun or retire? The movie looked like it's the end but it isn't and shouldn't be. Something has to come next

Regarding Ice.. i would enjoy the back story how Ice preferred Maverick for the Top Gun instructor. So many were against it except Iceman.. i would enjoy that argument.

I think part of the reason why top gun maverick was so successful was because the original film was good and fans probably always wanted to see a sequel and that took 30 years for that to happen.

He could take a "back seat" role and live the rest of his life with Penny while another actor takes the lead.

If done right, he could take that promotion, knowing he has done all the flying he wants to do, have a new set of people come in, then for whatever reason, he needs to jump into something and fly really reckless and save everyone from out of the sun. Then upon landing, he says it is time to hang up the wings for one last time, and fly into the sunset.

I think they should have Maverick alive as a Admiral or higher rank, and have him in as the chief of Top Gun, instead of killing him off, and some years later he retires in the 3rd movie as he gets married to Penny, and shows of him start a new and different life from there on, spends family time, and from time to time, spend time with the newer old crew, Rooster, Hangman, Phoenix, Bob, etc. And have the newer pilots take place as the new primary people. Have Rooster, Hangman, Phoenix, Bob, and so on, take parts of the roles that was originally had by Maverick, basically like the new generation of young Maverick. Keep the newer Top Gun movies going with Rooster, Hangman, Phoenix, Bob, etc. and have Maverick do surprise visits every now and then, but as a former pilot / former member of the force, and with his new family too. Also keep Maverick continue in the series.

This is an easy one in terms of next in the series. After all this is the Hollywood of today. The lead will be Phoenix. Maverick will play a retired fighter pilot come out of retirement just enough and in a greatly reduced role to be a coach or mentor to Phoenix after some personal tragedy she suffers. It probably something like she makes a huge mistake that gets someone or some people killed, she loses a leg, or someone is paralyzed because she missed up. Maybe she accidentally leaves some behind, etc. Maverick rebuilds her spirit, shows she is the best, etc, etc. She then atones for her mistake, becomes better than Maverick and head of Top Gun or higher up rank or something and the credits roll.

Nope. He is tasked to lead another mission but during the later part of their practice succession he suffers a minor blackout while pulling heavy Gs. He realizes it would possibly jeopardize the mission if he flys it, so he assigns Rooster and Hangman to lead the two elements of the attack. The mission is to intercept a covert attack by rogue Chinese military elements seeking to sink an American carrier battle group in the South China Sea. The covert Chinese mission has been uncovered by intelligence operatives and it involves a feint attack on Taiwan to draw the carrier group in to where it can be attacked by a covert squadron disguised as a training unit on one of the Chinese man-made islands north of the Philippines. After much dogfighting, both attacks are thwarted, but on the carrier, Cruise’s character learns that new satellite images have detected a covert hypersonic missile launcher equipped with a “carrier killer”, but it is beyond the range of both intercept flights which are now low on fuel. It is also beyond the range of Cruise’s aircraft, so he has to volunteer for a one way mission to ensure the returning two flights will have a carrier to land on. He makes the trip, during which he is bounced by a Chinese stealth fighter that he engages and shoots down after blacking out briefly in one of his manoeuvres. His now damaged aircraft gets close enough to destroy the missile site, and ditches in the sea. Both Rooster and Hangman’s flights return to the carrier, and the last shot we see is Cruise who is presumed lost, paddling in his inflatable dingy as darkness falls.

They dont really have to kill Maveric off for a third Top Gun. They only have to kill off his need or ability to fly again.

They should make it a prequel. Starting sometime after the events of TGM. An aging Maverick goes to visit Viper who is on his deathbed who tells Maverick the REAL truth about his father in detail. It then, in Saving Private Ryan style, flashes back to Vietnam when Viper and Mavericks father were in their prime, crap goes down, Viper isn't happy about having to keep things quiet about what happened, so his commander removes him from active duty and reassigns him to train at a new school for naval aviators...

I don't mind waiting for when this movie comes out, but when it does I hope whatever is planned will be great. If they manage to put on an amazing sequel, then they can end the trilogy with a good ending for both Maverick and the other characters that might return in the third one like Rooster. And when the trailer comes out and everything I'll be buying myself a ticket and seeing it with my family.

Maverick should have ended with him being promoted to a one star Admiral, retires and marries Penny. All the Pilots are also promoted and now LT Commander Bradshaw his is best man. They bring back as many of the original cast to be a the wedding.

Let's be honest...Mavericks death would be one of the most epic, tear inducing scenes in Hollywood history. I'm 51, and cry at the end of Gladiator every single time I watch it. This would have exactly the same effect if done the right way. 👍

Another possibility for him is that he will be held back from retirement and do another dangerous mission and maybe just maybe die like his father. But, unlike his father he will be hail as a hero. Second possibility is that he grow old and have a legacy of his own to take the mantle of a naval aviator. That's more likely to happen for me.

In the time line, Maverick would be at mandatory retirement age. The original film took place in the mid-1980's. Maverick was a full Lieutenant which would put him at about age 28. Thus, it stretches credulity that he would still be in active service because by 2024, he would be about 66 years old. That's even old for a test pilot. The plot should revolve around Maverick reconciling with the facts surrounding his father's death which were never made public. The only reference that exists is in the original movie when Viper told Maverick that his father was shot down on a secret mission over the wrong boundary lines after taking out 3 jets in a dogfight. Perhaps Maverick learns his father did not die and is being held in captivity and attempts a rescue.

obviously the next story will have to be man vs machine. maverick and his top gun class will have to go up against machines that wants to replace top gun, but the enemy is also advancing with UAV's and have a fleet of advanced air craft. The enemy that they attacked wants war, and use their new fleet of UAV's . This will push the Navy to launch their new programs and counter with their UAV's, Mav is asked to come back and help save the Top Gun program, and prove that the human factor should be present during battle. Maverick and his team will put together a strike force and basically challenge the US UAv's by going into battle after battle fighting these enemy UAV's , but they keep winning at a slower speed. But there are some missions that require a person to make a decision based on their heart or humanity , a mission that can change everything. Were a machine just takes orders, and releases the bomb, and a human takes the time to think if its the right call. maverick will have to choose either to let go and let it be , or think of the future, and prove that a pilot will always be needed in the seat.... crap I just described stealth....

So one of the other best-of-the-best could go on to succeed him and the ending would be that Maverick would retire handing the baton to one of the other fighters.

I love Top Gun Maverick. To the point where I've probably watched it half a dozen times. At no point did I think it NEEDED a third round. It seemed to have wrapped things up nicely.

There is another way his character can go. He has never had his own ship yet. So he could finally make general get his own ship. His pilots flying super high too secret missions. A new Maverick is placed on his Carrier. He mentors that pilot to make him best of the best. Then he passes the baton of the maverick role. For the franchise to make it past 3 movies. The new Maverick would have to be more dangerous risky and way bigger balls than the old Maverick. Definitely would need way more Attitude that would piss off a president 😅

Killing off Maverick would actually work because Mav had 2 great movies, and they just have to do his death right. It would be fitting too since both Goose and Iceman are gone. It'll sort of be like Obi-Wan joining Qui-Gon and Yoda (and I suppose Anakin) as Force ghosts. They'll all be going Mach [10] with their hair on fire in Heaven . That would be fitting end to pass on the Top Gun legacy to future generations. :) I think Hangman should take Top Gun forward. Rooster is too cool and collected.
