CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Viper (Tom Skerritt) tells Maverick (Tom Cruise) the truth about his father's death in combat; Maverick considers his future.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The film made more money than any other film in 1986 and even spawned a 1989 takeoff, Hot Shots. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."
CREDITS:

Cast: Tom Cruise, Tom Skerritt
Director: Tony Scott
Producers: Bill Badalato, Jerry Bruckheimer, Warren Skaaren, Don Simpson
Screenwriters: Jim Cash, Jack Epps Jr., Ehud Yonay

uncoolbeans Even now, one can gain confidence, but only if one has the resilience and inner fortitude to practice. All we have now are because of people who were confident enough to build things that we now enjoy... or take for granted if we choose. If we take things for granted, that’s it... no improvement. If we build upon what has been given us, perhaps one day our reach will not extend just to the sky, but beyond it.

It’s was somehow groundbreaking and set a pop culture standard that guys our age recognize from childhood with a certain nostalgia. Good post, man!

Together with their Marine / AirForce counterparts they deserve the proficiency bonuses as their skills do not come off the street everyday! It takes a ton of academic and other security qualifications along with Class 1 A Flight Physical to qualify. The pride of me seeing these men and women cannot be measured. They are the nation's best and they make us proud everyday along with all other in different jobs. A aircraft carrier is a floating city. We do more before 5a.mm.than what most people do all day! Did you hear the true story of Tony Scott wanting to get the perfect angle (sun in the background) for the iconic opening scene, particularly when one of the jets lands on the aircraft carrier? The military had done their job and couldn't continue to cruise in the carrier, unless the producers paid thousands of dollars more for reimbursement. Tony forked up over $10,000 of his own money so they would keep cruising for another 15 minutes and get many of those awesome shots.

Viper is wrong, F-4 Phantoms never flew off the USS Oriskany like he says in the movie. The USS Oriskany exclusively deployed single seat F-8 Crusaders because F-4’s were too heavy for its flight deck.

The name of Duke Mitchell was actually a nod to Randy “Duke” Cunningham, who flew the F-4J Phantom II on Connie. Shot down 3 MIG-21’s in May ‘72, plus 2 more from a few months earlier. 5 in all. All with missiles

@@goldenshark3182Viper is right about the VF Squadron 51 having flown with F-4 Phantoms II, was at the beginning of 70, both that participated in the end of the Vietnam War and in 1978 the Navy began replacing the F4 by F-14 A in the VF51 Squadron, but the F-4 was not embarked on the Oriskany , the ship had embarked 2 squadrons of F-8 Crusader 2 Squadrons from A-4 Skyhawk and later 2 A-7 Corsair squadrons.

It's rare to come across Movies like " Top Gun" such movies will not be made ..any more..I am glad ..i belonged to the 80s....an era of true blood..true life. With due respect to modern film making technology ..I can now say our generation was free from lousy silicon Graphics..& without the VFX shit..
