Maverick (Tom Cruise) abandons his wingman to chase Viper (Tom Skerritt), his senior instructor.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The film made more money than any other film in 1986 and even spawned a 1989 takeoff, Hot Shots. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."

@@TeddXplosion I loved the easter egg of when we first see Penny on camera. She comes in to David Bowie's "Let's Dance". Remember, when the first Top Gun came out, 'Labyrinth' was also in theaters with Jennifer Connolly, who plays Penny Benjamin here. 'Labyrinth' also starred David Bowie. (also, I'm not so damned smart. I hadn't caught it until somebody else mentioned it on line ;-) )

Lead and his wingman are often separated. It's the nature of air to air combat.

@@scootergeorge9576 Yeah, but the idea is to keep the other guy's attention on you and not your partner. One target is easily ganged up on and the other guy is less likely to be the one dead. Yes, Lead and wingman are separated but the means so is the other guy and his wingman. Statistics basically. In other words, Maverick was so *certain* Viper was alone that he didn't check to make sure he actually was: that's why Jester beat him. Just because you're separated doesn't mean you're alone.

Can we just appreciate the fact that _90 SECONDS_ after Maverick let Jester out of his sight thinking he was a dead man, Jester had managed to turn the tables on Hollywood, kill him, find Maverick, get on his six, and blow him away without warning? Viper and maverick may have wowed each other, but Jester was the MVP this mission.

My cousin was an f-14 tomcat pilot in the navy. He said any pilot who left their wingman at top gun would get reprimand put in their file and sent back to the carrier. Any pilot who did that in a real combat situation and survived would never fly again.

Actually in real combat you are not supposed to stick to your wingman like a magnet. It’s ridiculous and it will get both killed. If there is an aggressor behind the wingman needs to engage it to cover his lead. Close formation is good for air shows

In the Malvinas war the pilots went together to the fight up to the moment of the specific attack , then they try to escape by theirselves and reunite after the attack with no radio comunication up to the momenr they couldn't be intercepted.... this is a funny movie just that....

The meta part of this scene is that the point of the lesson is exactly how Maverick beat Jester, luring him in and then turning the tables. Viper is more mature because he serves as bait and lets Jester have the glory of killing Maverick, serving the mission rather than his own ego.

Viper was a Vietnam War vet. He doesn't need the glory because he's already earned it. And knowing him, he could've easily turned the table on Maverick but he wanted the latter to learn that overconfidence WILL get you killed in an actual engagement.

Viper preyed on all of Maverick's weaknesses, while testing Maverick's skill as a pilot. He knew Maverick was a cowboy, and needed to teach Maverick a lesson about teamwork. Viper understands the Skyhawk's maneuverability, so he bounces all over the place. He never moves in a straight line, and by constantly turning and changing his position, the radar can't acquire a lock. By Viper constantly shifting his position, Maverick has to make adjustments in a much heavier plane to try to keep the A-4 in sight and give it time to get a tone. All the while, Viper knows that Jester got Iceman, and he is waiting for Jester to come behind Maverick and take him out for abandoning a teammate for the sake of trying to be a hot shot. Musashi once said, "know your man, know his sword." Viper knows the F-14's strengths and weaknessness, and knew the overall mentality of the pilot in it. Those things also contributed to Maverick losing.

+KrosanBeast315 the weak a.k.a Viper waited his valueless bootlicker,to come rescue him. all along the movie, Mav doen't need help in a dogfight. i remind you : the great Mav took out Jester. Mav's only mistake in this : he never taugh to check his 6, otherwise he would have taken out Jester AND Viper. and Mav should have shoot down Ice first in the final dogfight, Ice killed Goose !

+gargouenzene Maverick got a lock on Jester AFTER he was below the Hard Deck, where Maverick was not allowed to engage. Therefore, Maverick's lock on Jester was technically an illegal point. Viper also knows any Wing Man is NOT valueless, and Viper is skilled enough to have gone on the offensive if he chose to. If Wing Men were useless in the Top Gun dogfights, all of the Hops would have been 1 on 1. Concerning the issue about checking 6 o'clock, usually the RIO is meant to do that so the pilot does not have to worry about it. That is one reason why the two man crew was designed for the F-14. Maverick and Goose were so focused on Viper they forgot about Jester. Maverick knows the F-14 has three sets of mirrors for the pilot to see behind to check 6 o'clock at anytime. To address another issue, during the final dog fight... Maverick is not foolish enough to fire upon a teammate or shoot down Ice. No one would program the AWG-9 radar to lock onto a carrier plane and/or one of the same squadron... think about it for a second. Lastly, Ice DID NOT kill Goose as you claim: Goose died when Maverick accidentally flew through Ice's jetwash which caused both engines to flame out, which then caused a flat spin, and Goose had to reach the ejection handle because Maverick was pinned forward by the centrifugal force of the flat spin. When the canopy popped, Maverick's seat missed the canopy, and Goose's seat flew into the metal which separates the canopy into two sections, killing Goose upon impact. The whole thing was neither Iceman's fault or even Maverick's since the Board of Inquiry found Lt. Pete Mitchell was NOT at fault. I would suggest you watch the clips on KZfaq that illustrate what I said, because your view of certain sequences is not correct and equally does not make any sense with the movie's plot lines.

Real good post Krosan. Mav showed his skill in keeping up but Air Combat is about teamwork just as much as individual skill. Viper said it at the start. They are all good, but at Top Gun they will be better. I agree with everything you said. Viper knew the plane and the pilot and his victory was assured, but the best thing was he fullfilled his role as a teacher and did his job since maverick never forgot the lesson. A true teacher that humbled his student not for ego but to make the student better.

@@KrosanBeast315 I'm not so sure. Viper's goal is to make the students better; at the end of the day's he's a teacher. No doubt that's what his actions are saying, but I'm more inclined to believe the actual words are genuine compliments.

@@markgundle4150 Right, Viper has set up this whole exercise to hammer home a lesson to Maverick to fight as part of a team rather than going off on his own to bag a kill. But at the same time, Viper's plan relied on his being able to stay out of Maverick's sights long enough for Jester to take out Hollywood and then sneak up on Maverick, and Viper is acknowledging how difficult Maverick made that task.

It wasn't just about leaving his wingman, he underestimated Jester - the same mistake Jester made earlier. In other words, you need confidence to do the job well, but overconfidence will get you killed, and there's a fine line between the two.

At least the story has Maverick quickly losing because of his foolishness, which is better than most Hollywood writers would ever allow their stories to admit. That said, Goose later mentions that Viper defeated Iceman's flight even faster, so all in all, Viper, the one with the most experience, is unquestionably the best pilot throughout the story.

Amazing aircraft designed by Douglas/Ed Heinemann,. Comes from the days when small size, inexpensive operation and efficiency were still keywords when designing military jets. A far cry from the monster F-35 which took sooo long and is sooo overbudget that it is almost a joke.

When I was younger, it always amazed me to see the A-4 Skyhawk outperform the much more contemporary F-14 in this scene. I guess it really comes down to who's in the cockpit flying the bird, not the actual plane itself.

Don't forget these are Top Gun adversary A-4 F models with a muuuuch more powerful engine than earlier models. Those things pushed near 1:1 thrust to weight ratio. Very respectable performance.

Pretty sure these were F-14A's, which had to deal with underpowered engines. The tactics that Top Gun taught would help pilots mitigate the limitations of their aircraft. The A-4 could certainly get the upperhand in certain scenarios, it was up to the pilots to avoid that.

Remember that Viper was a Vietnam war veteran and also a graduate of the Top Gun Fighter Weapons School himself, so he'd be a Damned good pilot and would know how far to push the A-4F Skyhawk beyond its limits to be able to hold his own against jets like the F-14. When the F-15A was introduced to the USAF they did a mock combat scenario with F-4E's, with the General in charge of the F-15 unit boasting to the F-4 commander that they would be able to outfly and outfight the F-4's in dissimilar air to air combat.. the General should have realized that the F4 crews were all Vietnam vets and they ate the F-15's for breakfast.. using the F4 to full advantage against the faster and more maneuverable F-15's.. the General's face was red when all of his F-15's were "shot down" with only 2 losses to the F-4's...

In real life, the instructors at Top Gun are expert pilots (many of them former Top Gun graduates themselves) who know the advantages and disadvantages of their aggressor aircraft (at this time, the aggressor aircraft were the A-4 and F-5, since then other aircraft such as the F-16N have been used) extremely well, and also the advantages and disadvantages of the F-14. The major goal of the Top Gun program was, in addition to general tactical instruction, to teach the pilots to make the most of the strengths of their aircraft and to mitigate the weaknesses. The F-5 and A-4 were chosen as aggressors because they could replicate the flight characteristics of many of the Russian fighters in service throughout the world's air forces at the time (MiG-19, MiG-21, MiG-23), which were lightweight and maneuverable but did not gain and retain energy (i.e. potential energy in the form of altitude, or kinetic energy in the form of airspeed) as well as the heavy, powerful F-14. Thus, the pilots in the Top Gun program were able to learn in scenarios similar to those they were likely to face if they found themselves in real combat. Which is to say, the A-4 didn't actually outperform the F-14 on the whole, but in the right hands it could outperform it in certain areas, and the Top Gun instructors knew exactly how to squeeze every ounce of performance they could out of it, and how to create favorable engagements for themselves, thus providing a very real challenge for the Tomcat.

@@EliteF22 Top Gun was initiated in order to train F4-Phantom pilots to deal with very agile and fast MIG-21s (Fishbeds). The A4 was a fighter bomber but certainly no "mud mover" and very agile and nimble.

Everyone can speculate. It's how modern pilots can make observations on WW1 tactics and aircraft, having never flown a Spowith Camel, or a Folker DR1. We are all armchair generals at some point, even armed forces pilots.

Nice how they didn't make Jester out to be a jerk and hold a grudge against Maverick. Would have been such a tired trope if they did. He was there to teach and mentor like Viper and even gave Maverick props and advice at the end.

It's funny you mention it because the sequel had Maverick - a highly decorated Naval Captain and long-time veteran - being mistreated by superior and subordinate alike; while obviously cocky and low-key not especially impressed by either Viper or Jester, and not keen to follow Stinger's orders where it concerned Cougar potentially dying needlessly and taking Merlin with him, it was nothing but "yes sir"/"no sir" between Maverick and all his superior officers in the original. In the sequel he's borderline abused by Admiral Ed Harris after an incredible achievement, shown no respect whatsoever by Admiral Tightass Don Draper despite allegedly "deeply admiring" Iceman [who, it seems, came to deeply admire Maverick] and overtly disrespected by Rooster and Hangman; even that stunt in the bar, given that they should have seen his jacket and mission patches, would have been unthinkable IRL [even if you could legitimately believe that none of the alleged TOPGUN graduates knew who he was, which is impossible given his exploits and the fact that in this universe his imagery is literally everywhere - like right there in the pilots' briefing room, not to mention there's a huge picture of him and Iceman when you walk into the building]. I know military discipline isn't what it used to be, and "it's just a movie", but they're supposed to have advisers that point out stuff like this.

+Ben noneofyourbeeswax The fighter jet flown by Maverick and the others is none other than my personal all-time favorite fighter the F-14 Tomcat! A glorious bird nonetheless. The Top Gun instructors fly A-4 Skyhawks, subsonic multi-role fighter jets. The "MIGs" in the film are actually F-5 Tigers which have the adversary paint-job on them.

Not a whole lot of radar at the rear of the plane. Plus visually spotting him would be at best a crapshoot, particularly with the limited visibility he had.

that is only while radar is being used. radar is used to find the target...then all is visual after. using radar makes the user a bigger target. so SOP states to turn radar off during and dog fight engagement.

SOP is absolutely NOT to turn the radar off in visual range. The radar is important for slaving the Sidewinder seeker head onto a locked target, and for calculating lead for the gun. Guns are much much much more accurate with a radar lock. But the radar is a front-facing sensor. The RIO should be keeping eyes out for other bandits, monitoring the radar warning reveiver (limited usefulness against A-4s though) and calling airspeed so the pilot can keep his eyes on the bandit (F-14A had no speed indication on the HUD).
